Vaillant – Condensate drain heating 1.5 m including connecting adapter (aroTHERM Split plus)
Original heated (frost-free) condensate drain route from Vaillant for outdoor units of the aroTHERM Split plus series. It ensures safe removal of condensate produced by the evaporator of the heat pump during operation in freezing weather, where an unprotected condensate drain could freeze and cause accumulation, backflow into the unit, or formation of dangerous ice/slippery ice around the unit.
Principle and purpose
During defrosting cycles and normal operation at low outdoor temperatures, the evaporator of the outdoor unit produces a significant amount of condensate, which must be drained beyond the reach of frost – either directly into the sewer/sewer line below the freezing point or via a heated route, if a free (gravity) drain is not possible due to the unit's location. This set extends frost protection up to a distance of up to 1.5 m from the unit using a heating cable integrated into the insulated pipe, thus preventing freezing of the drain even during prolonged frosts.

Compatibility
Designed for outdoor units of the aroTHERM Split plus series VWL 35/8.2 AS S2 to VWL 75/8.2 AS S2. For units of the aroTHERM pro series, a separate version with a longer heating cable is available (see our product "Condensate drain heating – aroTHERM pro").
Installation and connection
The set is connected to the condensate outlet of the outdoor unit using the supplied adapter and is led towards the safe suction point or connection to the sewer, with a slope preventing backflow. The heating cable is connected to a 230 V power supply (thermostatically controlled or continuous power supply is recommended according to the manufacturer's instructions and local climatic conditions) by a qualified electrician/service technician. The route must be laid in such a way that mechanical damage (e.g. during digging, mowing) is prevented and the required slope is maintained along the entire length.
Consequences of omitting the heated route
If in areas with icy winters the condensate drain is not solved by a heated route and at the same time a free gravity drain below the freezing point is not possible, freezing of the condensate directly in the unit, ice formation on the bottom of the unit (risk of slipping in the surrounding area), and in the worst case, damage to the condensate collection tray due to expansion of frozen water may occur. Therefore, investment in a heated route is considered a standard part of a quality installation in our climatic conditions (common icy winters).
Common questions
Is this set mandatory for every installation? It is not necessary where a free gravity drain of the condensate directly into the ground/suction is ensured without the risk of freezing (e.g. a short route with sufficient slope outside the sidewalk), but we recommend it as a precaution for most installations in icy areas.
Can the route be extended beyond 1.5 m? This specific set is designed for a length up to 1.5 m; for longer routes, consult the installation company for an alternative solution (e.g. a separate heating cable with higher power).
Is a separate electrical circuit required? Yes, the heating cable requires connection to a 230 V power supply, ideally via a separate protected circuit according to the electrician's instructions.
Operational and service recommendations
Before the start of the winter season, we recommend checking the functionality of the heating cable (e.g. by measuring current consumption or checking the signal on the control unit, if available) and the condition of the route insulation. During winter, it is advisable to occasionally check whether water is freely draining from the outlet of the route and whether excessive ice is forming around the outlet, which could indicate partial clogging or freezing outside the protected route.

Why is condensate freeze protection important in our climatic conditions
Slovakia belongs to a climatic zone with common winter frosts, and precisely during the period of the strongest frosts (when the need for heat from the heat pump is highest), the outdoor unit produces the most condensate during defrosting cycles. If the condensate drain route is not protected against freezing (by a heating cable or sufficient slopes below the freezing point), a typical problem occurs: the condensate in the pipe freezes, water begins to accumulate back towards the unit, ice forms in the collection tray, and dangerous ice forms around the unit, which is a risk especially when walking around the unit (e.g. during service access).
Long-term repeated freezing of condensate can ultimately lead to mechanical damage to the collection tray due to expansion of freezing water, which represents an expensive repair outside the standard warranty (if the cause is proven to be an improperly solved condensate drain). For this reason, we recommend considering the original heated condensate drain route as a standard, not optional, part of a complete and professionally implemented heat pump installation in our climatic conditions.
Installation steps step by step
- Connect the supplied adapter to the condensate outlet of the outdoor unit.
- Lead the insulated route with the heating cable towards the safe discharge point (suction/sewer), maintaining the prescribed slope.
- Secure the route against mechanical damage and ensure that the heating cable adheres along the entire length of the pipe.
- Connect the heating cable to a 230 V power supply via a separately protected circuit (performed by a qualified electrician).
- Verify the functionality of the heating cable and free condensate flow before final covering of the route.
