What is the water leak detector for

The water leak detector serves as a protective element for kitchen filtration systems connected to the water supply. It is most commonly used with reverse osmosis units, nanofiltration systems, and other filters located in the cabinet under the sink.

Its main purpose is to stop the water supply in the event of a leak. A leak can occur, for example, due to a system malfunction, a loose joint, a disconnected hose, a damaged quick coupling, or another issue. Since kitchen filters are often hidden inside a cabinet, a small leak may not be immediately visible, and water can leak unnoticed for a long time.

The detector helps reduce this risk by reacting directly to the presence of water and shutting off the supply to the filtration system.

How the water leak detector works

The detector is installed on the supply hose of the filtration system, and its sensing part is placed on the floor or at the bottom of the cabinet under the sink. If water appears at the sensor location, the detector reacts and automatically shuts off the water supply to the filter.

Inside the detector is a special safety cartridge that gradually swells upon contact with water. As the cartridge absorbs water and increases in volume, it mechanically activates the detector's shut-off mechanism. This stops the flow of water into the filtration system and limits further leakage.

Thanks to this simple mechanical principle, the detector does not require electrical power or complex controls. It is a practical safety solution for everyday household use, especially for kitchen filters located under the sink.

After the detector has been activated, the cause of the leak must be removed, the filtration system checked, and the detector's consumable cartridge replaced with a new one so that the device is ready for further use.

Installation and use

Installing the detector is simple. The device is connected to the hose of the filtration system with a 1/4" connection, and the sensor is placed where water would first appear in case of a leak. This is most commonly the bottom of the kitchen cabinet under the sink, the area under the filter, or the spot under the couplings and hoses.

During installation, we recommend checking the correct connection of the hoses, the tightness of the joints, and that there is sufficient space to place the sensor. The detector is a safety accessory that helps reduce the risk of damage, but it does not replace regular inspection of the filtration system.
