An unpleasant smell coming from the drain or water that refuses to drain – these are the two most common problems plumbers encounter on almost every job. At first glance, it seems trivial, but when you really dive into it, you'll find there can be a whole range of causes and the solutions aren't always the same. In practice, I've seen people buy expensive chemical products, pour liters of boiling water down the drain, or even call a plumber for something they could fix themselves in five minutes. This article is for you if you want to truly understand what's happening in your sink trap, why it smells, why the water is standing – and what to do about it effectively, safely, and permanently.

How a sink trap actually works: the basic principle you need to understand

Before solving the problem, you need to understand what a sink trap does and why it's there in the first place. A sink trap is not just "a pipe under the sink" – it's a hydraulic seal that prevents sewer gases from entering the living space. It works simply: it maintains a water seal – a column of water usually 50 to 70 mm high – in its lowest part (the bend). This water seal acts as a barrier against waste from the sewer system.

When the water seal is disturbed – either it dries up or is lost due to a vacuum – sewer gases have a free path directly into your bathroom. This is the most common reason for the smell, which people mistakenly attribute to a clog or dirt. So if your sink trap smells, the first question is not "what is clogged," but "is there water in it at all?"

Smelly sink trap: six most likely causes

In practice, the smell from a drain can be divided into several basic categories. Each has a different character, a different source, and a different solution.

1. Dried water seal

This is by far the most common case with sink traps in bathrooms that are not used for a long time – vacation homes, cottages, apartments, or even less frequently used toilets or bidets. The water simply evaporates from the trap's bend, the water seal disappears, and sewer gases get through. You can recognize it by the fact that the smell is intense, comes all at once (not gradually), and when you run water for a few seconds, the smell disappears.

The solution is trivial: run water and let the trap fill up. If the space is not used for a long time, you can pour a little mineral or sunflower oil into the trap – this thin layer slows down the evaporation of the water seal for several months.

2. Biological deposits and biofilm

In sink traps (especially in sinks and bathtubs), a fatty biofilm gradually accumulates – a mixture of soap residues, fat deposits, dead skin cells, and hair. This biofilm is a breeding ground for anaerobic bacteria that produce hydrogen sulfide and other smelly gases. The characteristic smell is sweetish to rotten, not a clean sewer smell.

This type of smell appears gradually, gets worse in warm weather (bacteria are more active) and with stagnant water. The biofilm settles on the walls of the trap body, in the bend, and on the shut-off valve. Simple flushing with water won't help – the biofilm must be mechanically removed or chemically broken down.

3. Clogged trap with decomposing organic residues

Hair, soap deposits, and cosmetic residues – this is the classic "clog" in shower and bathtub traps. When this material decomposes (which happens gradually), it produces an unpleasant smell. Moreover, it slows down the drainage, which leads to water standing – and this standing water further ferments and smells. Typical for families with long hair, users of conditioners and fatty shower gels.

4. Improperly installed or damaged trap

We see this with cheap plastic traps after a few years, or with poor installation: the gasket cracks, the bend cracks, the thread leaks, or the connecting pipe is not properly cut into the sewer flange. Result: either the trap leaks and sewer gases bypass the water seal, or water drips outside the waste pipe and creates moisture, from which mold grows – another source of smell.

5. Ventilation issues in the sewer system

Less common, but real cause: the sewer in the house is not properly ventilated. When you flush the toilet or drain a large amount of water, a vacuum is created in the pipes that "sucks" the water seal out of nearby traps. Then the water in the trap bubbles up and the smell comes all at once. If this happens repeatedly and without any other obvious cause, the vent pipe on the roof should be checked.

6. Dirt in the overflow pipe or overflow opening of the bathtub

This cause is most often overlooked. The overflow opening of the bathtub (the one that prevents overflow) is connected to the trap via a separate pipe. In this pipe, soap deposits and biological film accumulate, which smell – but cleaning the trap itself does not remove this source. Standing water in the trap or drain: causes and where to look for the problem

Standing water is a separate, but related topic. It can be an accompanying symptom of a smell, or it can exist completely independently. From practice, I know that people often confuse these two problems: if water is standing, they automatically think the trap is clogged. It's not always true.

Clogged trap – the most direct cause

A trap can catch all sorts of things: hair (the main culprit in bathrooms), lint, fibers from rags, pieces of soap, remnants of gel, and even small objects that fall into the drain. In shower trays with floor drains or inlets, sand and dirt from feet are added to the mix.

Problem behind the trap – in the pipe

This is a trickier case. The trap is clean, but water still stands – because the clog is in the waste pipe behind the trap. Most often, it is a fat buildup in the horizontal section of the waste pipe (typically in the kitchen, but it can also happen in a bathroom with a bathtub waste pipe). It is harder to diagnose because the trap looks clean when removed. The solution requires a plumber's snake or hydro jet cleaning.

Insufficient slope of the waste pipe

This error occurs during installation or during renovations, where the pipe layout had to be adjusted. The waste pipe must have a minimum slope of 1–2% (i.e., 1 to 2 cm per meter of length). If the slope is less, water cannot drain by gravity and accumulates. If the pipe is even laid with a reverse slope (rising from the trap to the vertical sewer), water will accumulate permanently. This is a construction problem that cannot be solved by cleaning – the pipe layout must be reworked.

Standing water at floor drains and inlets

A special chapter is the problems with floor drains and inlets in shower trays. Here, not only the cleanliness of the trap matters, but also the slope of the floor toward the drain. If the slope is insufficient (at least 1–1.5% from the wall to the drain), water will accumulate on the floor. This problem is solved during installation – it is very costly to fix later, as tiling must be redone. If the drain or inlet is working, but water is pooling in the corners of the shower tray, it may be a problem with the floor slope, not the drain. But if water is standing directly in the drain and draining slowly, the trap under the drain is likely clogged. Detailed procedure: how to determine the real cause

Instead of immediately reaching for chemicals or calling a plumber, I recommend proceeding systematically. Spend five minutes on diagnostics and save hours of unnecessary work.

Step 1: Identify the odor character. Sewer (gassy, hydrogen sulfide) odor = likely missing or broken water seal. Sweet, rotten odor = biofilm and organic deposits. Moldy odor = moisture somewhere in the structure, possibly a leaking trap.

Step 2: Run water for 10–15 seconds. If the odor disappears – the problem was a dried-out water seal. If it persists – continue searching.

Step 3: Check the drainage speed. Fill the sink or bathtub a few centimeters and watch how quickly it drains. If it takes more than 30 seconds to drain completely, you have a clogged drain.

Step 4: Remove and inspect the trap strainer (filter). Most modern traps have a removable filter or grid. Unscrew or pull it out and inspect. If it is completely clogged with hair and dark matter – the cause is clear.

Step 5: Disassemble the trap (if the problem is still unknown). Under the sink, turn the trap elbow and inspect its interior. If the elbow is clean and the pipe behind it is also clean – the problem is elsewhere: in the pipe, in the venting, or it is a systemic issue.

Solutions step by step: from the simplest to the most demanding

Mechanical trap cleaning

This is the first and most effective method. Unscrew the trap elbow (place a container under the sink – residual water will spill out), clean it with a bottle brush, check the seals, and reassemble. For bathtub traps, the procedure depends on the type: a click/clack drain can be easily removed, while an automatic bathtub trap has its own opening mechanism. Biological cleaning without chemicals: baking soda and vinegar

A classic home method that actually works on biofilm: pour 4–5 tablespoons of baking soda into the drain, pour 100–150 ml of white vinegar (it reacts and foams), cover the drain with a plug for 10–15 minutes, then rinse with hot water. Repeat once a month as a preventive measure. The procedure will not dissolve a hair clog, but it effectively breaks down fatty biofilm and deodorizes the trap.

Pressure boost – bell or pressure pump

If the clog is more stubborn and hard to reach mechanically (for example, in a longer horizontal pipe), use a pressure bell (a rubber bell placed over the drain and pressed). When pressed, it creates pressure that pushes the clog further into the sewer. A more modern alternative is a pressure pump (related to the so-called sewer gun) – it works on the principle of pulsed air pressure and is more effective. Important: never use a pressure bell on a drain where you have previously used aggressive chemicals – during backflow, it may spray into your face.

Drain trap replacement

If the trap is old (plastics become brittle over the years and seals dry out), cracked or its material cannot be properly cleaned, the simplest solution is to replace it. New traps (whether for bathtubs, sinks or floor drains) are cheap and their installation can be done by a handy DIYer in an hour. A new trap brings fresh seals, a smooth interior without biofilm and proper function of the water seal.

Special case: bad odors or stagnant water at floor drains and outlets

Floor drains and outlets have their own specifics. The trap is usually integrated directly into the body of the drain or outlet and access to it is not always as straightforward as with a sink trap. In addition, we encounter the problem of foot debris (sand, soil), hair and soap film – all of which get caught in the integrated basket or in the drain body itself.

With a floor outlet with a grid (for example Floor outlet with chrome grid 12x12cm, DN 40, brass), it is necessary to regularly remove the grid, clean the collection basket underneath and check the trap seal. A brass body is more durable and has a longer lifespan than plastic alternatives, which is not negligible for outlets built under tiles – since replacement requires cutting.

With double-sided drains, such as double-sided floor drain, 750mm, DOUBLE9 FIT and GO, stainless steel, it is important to check the cleanliness of the entire length of the drain, not just the area around the trap. Dirt can accumulate at the far end of the drain and gradually degrade the entire drainage system.

A stainless steel surface of the drain is advantageous in terms of hygiene: a smooth polished stainless steel does not attract biofilm as easily as plastic, is easier to clean and is not affected by aggressive chemicals (for example, acidic cleaning agents for lime scale). Prevention: how to avoid bad smells and stagnant water in advance

Fixing problems is less pleasant than preventing them. Here are a few proven methods from practice:

  • Regular basket cleaning – remove trapped hair from the drain basket once a week. It takes 10 seconds and eliminates 80% of clogs.
  • Once a month: baking soda + vinegar – a preventive biological cleaning of biofilm without aggressive chemicals.
  • Use a hair catcher – a small silicone plug with spikes that catches hair before it gets into the trap. An investment of a euro that saves dozens of euros on cleaning.
  • Never let the trap dry out – if you are going away for a longer time, pour a glass of water with a drop of oil (kitchen sunflower oil is enough) into each drain.
  • Check the seals – every time you disassemble the trap (for example during cleaning), inspect the rubber seals. If they are hard, cracked or deformed – replace them. It costs just a few cents and saves you from leaks.
  • Do not use aggressive chemical cleaners regularly – corrosive cleaners (sodium hydroxide) are effective once in case of a strong clog, but regular use damages plastic seals, corrodes PVC pipes and disrupts the biological balance in the sewer system.
  • During renovation: correct slope of the waste pipe – the plumber must guarantee a minimum slope of 1–2% (10–20 mm per meter). Check this before embedding the pipes.

When to call a plumber and when you can do it yourself

This is a question every bathroom owner asks. Here is a simple practical table:

How to recognize that the trap is really damaged and needs to be replaced

Not every problem can be solved by cleaning. A trap is a cheap component, but when it is damaged, it can cause expensive damage (flooding neighbors, wall mold). Look for these warning signs:

  • There are wet spots or water droplets on the floor under the trap or in the cabinet under the sink – the seal is leaking.
  • The plastic elbow of the trap is yellowed, brittle, cracked when touched – the material is degraded.
  • The thread on the elbow cannot be tightened – the plastic is worn or deformed.
  • Recurring clogs despite regular cleaning – the shape of the trap is deformed and it catches more dirt than it should.
  • The trap is older than 10–15 years and comes from an unknown "grey" imported product.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

My trap smells, but water drains normally – what is the cause?

If water drains well, but the odor persists, it is most likely either a dried water seal (run some water, the problem disappears immediately), or a biological biofilm on the walls of the trap. Water alone cannot remove this – mechanical cleaning or treatment with baking soda and vinegar is required. Less often, it may be an issue with the house's ventilation system, which needs to be addressed by a plumber.

Water in the shower only stands in the corners, but it drains – is it a trap or floor issue?

If water drains (even slowly) and the problem is only the corners, it is almost certainly an issue with the floor slope – not the trap. The slope of the shower floor must direct water toward the drain (tray or outlet) at a minimum of 1–1.5%. If the floor is flat or has the opposite slope, water will collect in the corners regardless of how good your trap is. This is resolved during reconstruction by relaying the tiles with the correct slope – not by replacing the drain.

Can I pour caustic soda (NaOH, Bref Mole, etc.) into the trap?

Once in case of a severe clog – yes, it is effective. But regular use of caustic chemicals damages rubber seals and can degrade certain types of PVC pipes. Moreover, if the trap contains a mixture of lye and a metal hose spring (in some types of basins), a reaction may occur. Lye can cause corrosion on aluminum parts. For regular maintenance, it is much safer to use a combination of baking soda and vinegar, or enzymatic drain cleaners.

I cleaned the bathtub trap, but the odor persists when the tub is full. Where should I look?

If the odor occurs when the tub is full, but not when it is empty, it most likely comes from the overflow pipe – the pipe connecting the overflow opening (round cover on the top edge of the tub) to the body of the trap. Biofilm accumulates in this pipe and, when the water level is higher, it comes into contact with the water and causes an odor. Solution: remove the overflow (usually 1–2 screws), flush and clean the overflow pipe with a brush. In bathtub traps with an automatic filling system, where the connection is compact, this maintenance is easier.

I replaced the trap a year ago and it smells again – am I doing something wrong?

No, nothing is wrong. Biofilm forms in every trap regardless of whether it is new or old – only older traps with a rougher plastic surface capture it faster. The solution is regular maintenance (monthly cleaning with baking soda and vinegar, weekly removal of hair from the strainer). If the odor appears soon after replacement, check whether the new trap is properly installed and the seals are tight – a leaky connection can be a source of odor bypassing the water seal.

We have a new building, the trap is new, and it still smells. How is that possible?

This happens in new buildings for two reasons. First: the trap simply dried out during the time the apartment stood empty before moving in – run some water and the problem is solved. Second, more subtle: the sewage system in the building is not properly ventilated (the vent pipe on the roof is not completed, is blocked, or the anti-siphon valve is missing). In such a case, traps may also make sounds (bubbling) when the toilet is flushed. This needs to be reported to the developer or addressed by a plumber.

Conclusion: system thinking about drains pays off

Odors from traps and stagnant water are problems that always have a logical cause – and once you find it, the solution is usually simple and cheap. The worst approach is to ignore the issue: what starts as an unpleasant odor can end up with a moldy wall, moisture in the structure, or flooding a neighbor. On the contrary, five minutes of cleaning once a month will prevent ninety percent of the problems I encounter in practice.
