What is the difference between a calorMATIC thermostat and a standard thermostat?

This is one of the most basic, yet most frequently asked questions. A simple room thermostat (e.g., a classic bimetallic or a cheap digital one) communicates with the boiler in only two states: on / off. The boiler either runs at full power or it stops. Thermostats from the calorMATIC range from Vaillant are designed completely differently – they are weather-compensated thermostats with an integrated room component.

A weather-compensated thermostat tracks the outside temperature (via an external sensor) and continuously modulates the heating water temperature according to a pre-set curve (weather compensation curve). In other words, the boiler does not heat "at full power and then stop," but operates with variable output – in very cold weather it delivers warmer water, in mild weather it delivers cooler water. The result is higher energy savings, more even thermal comfort, and lower boiler wear. Can I connect a calorMATIC thermostat to any boiler?

No. calorMATIC thermostats are primarily designed for Vaillant boilers with an eBUS interface, or with an OpenTherm interface (depending on the specific thermostat model). Protherm boilers (even though both manufacturers are now under the same roof of the Vaillant Group) may have slightly different implementations of the communication protocol, so compatibility is not automatic.

Practical rule: if you have a Vaillant boiler with an eBUS connector (usually marked directly on the boiler board), you can use a calorMATIC thermostat designed for eBUS. If you want to connect the thermostat via OpenTherm, you must verify whether your boiler supports OpenTherm – not all older models do. What does the letter "f" in the name calorMATIC 360f or 392f mean?

The letter "f" indicates a wireless version of the thermostat (from German "Funk" = radio). Vaillant calorMATIC 360f is thus the wireless version of the basic model 360, and similarly calorMATIC 392f is the wireless version of model calorMATIC 392. The wireless version consists of two parts: an external temperature sensor (or room unit) and a receiver that is connected to the boiler via wires. Communication between the room unit and the receiver takes place via radio at a frequency of 868 MHz.

Why does the regulation not maintain a constant room temperature, but only overheats and then cools down?

This is a typical sign of an incorrectly set equitemperature curve or an unsuitable setting of the room temperature influence parameter. Equitemperature regulation primarily controls the temperature of the heating water according to the outside temperature. If the curve is set too steep (i.e., the boiler supplies too much heat even in mild weather), the rooms overheat and the thermostatic valves in the radiators or the room sensor of the regulation cause shutdowns. The result is exactly what customers describe: "the boiler starts up, the room overheats, the boiler is turned off and then we have to wait until it starts up again."

The solution is to reduce the slope of the equitemperature curve (a parameter marked differently – on calorMATIC, for example, as "slope of the curve" or directly as a numerical value of the slope, typically in the range of 0.2 to 4.0) and at the same time check whether the room temperature influence (room correction) is enabled. What is the "room temperature influence" parameter and should it be turned on?

calorMATIC regulations primarily work with the outside temperature, but they can also include the current room temperature as a correction factor in the calculation. This parameter (sometimes marked as "Room influence" or "RI") indicates by how many degrees the set temperature of the heating water is shifted if the room temperature is 1°C higher or lower than desired. A typical value is 0 (off) to 5 K/K.

In practice: if you have a well-insulated house with low-temperature heating (floor heating), it makes sense to set the room temperature influence to a higher value, because the system reacts slowly and the room temperature accurately reflects the actual thermal load. In older houses with radiators, the situation is more complex – too high a room temperature influence can cause regulation instability. A recommended starting value is 1 to 2 K/K.

I have a calorMATIC 430 model – is it significantly different from the 392?

Vaillant calorMATIC 430 and calorMATIC 392 are both equitemperature regulators with a room component, but there are several practically important differences between them. Model 430 (and its wireless version calorMATIC 430f) belongs to a newer generation within the range of "older regulators" – it has a graphical display, an intuitive user interface and can work with two heating circuits (circuit 1 and circuit 2 with a mixing valve), if the boiler and installation allow it.

calorMATIC 392 and 392f are more robust, simpler and in many cases more reliable in long-term operation. They do not have a graphical display, but their operation is understandable even for an older customer who does not want to spend hours in the menu. In terms of final energy savings, the differences are minimal – both models perform equitemperature regulation equally well, if set correctly.

Questions about installation and wiring

Where should the outdoor temperature sensor be placed and does it matter?

Yes, it matters significantly. The outdoor temperature sensor is the input from which the regulation derives the entire equitemperature curve. If the sensor is placed incorrectly, the entire regulation works on the basis of incorrect data and the result is accordingly – the house either overheats or is cold.

Correct placement of the outdoor temperature sensor:

  • Northern or north-western side of the building – without direct sunlight for most of the day
  • At least 2 meters above ground level – so that the sensor is not affected by reflected heat from the ground
  • Far from all openings (ventilation openings, exhausts of appliances, windows, doors) – at least 1.5 m
  • Protected from direct rain, but with free air circulation (not in a closed niche or under an overhanging roof)
  • On the facade, not on the roof or on the fence

In practice, we most often see the mistake of placing the sensor on the southern facade "because there was a free cable there" – in this case, the sensor reports a temperature that is 8–12°C higher than the actual outside temperature in the afternoon, and the boiler practically stops heating exactly when it could still be cold in the house (spring, autumn, cloudy days). How many wires do I need between the thermostat and the boiler?

It depends on the type of communication and the model of the thermostat. For eBUS communication (the most common case for calorMATIC thermostats), 2 wires for the communication bus are sufficient – but note, you also need 2 additional wires for the external temperature sensor. In total, typically 4 wires (or 2+2 in specially routed cables). It is recommended to use a separate shielded cable for the sensor and a non-cut cable directly to the boiler terminal block.

For the wireless version (e.g., 392f or 430f), you still need 2 eBUS wires to the boiler and 2 wires for the external sensor at the receiver in the boiler room. The external sensor is always wired – the wireless feature refers only to the communication between the room unit and the receiver, not the external temperature sensor.

Can calorMATIC be connected instead of the original standard thermostat without replacing the wiring?

It depends on the situation. If the original thermostat was connected via eBUS (2 wires), replacing it with another calorMATIC thermostat is typically a straightforward task – you disconnect the old device and connect the new one. The external sensor is usually already connected directly to the boiler, so it is sufficient to pair the thermostat with the sensor via the menu.

If the original thermostat was a simple ON/OFF type (2 wires 230V or contactless contact), the situation is more complicated. calorMATIC thermostats communicate via eBUS, not via a simple switching contact – so the original wiring is not sufficient and a new cable must be run. This is one of the reasons why we recommend using the wireless version during renovations, which elegantly solves the wiring issue.

Questions about faults and diagnostics

The thermostat displays an error code or fails to connect to the boiler – what to do?

This is undoubtedly the most common problem that customers call about. The causes can vary, but the diagnostic procedure is standard:

  • Check the physical wiring: eBUS terminals on the thermostat and the boiler, correct polarity (eBUS is not polarity-sensitive, but some older boilers are – verify in the manual), secure contact, no corrosion
  • Check the power supply: The thermostat receives power via the eBUS bus from the boiler – if the boiler has no power or is faulty, the thermostat will not work either
  • Reset the thermostat: Most calorMATIC models have a procedure to reset to factory settings – after that, try pairing with the boiler again according to the manual
  • Check the boiler settings: The boiler must have the external controller function activated (the parameter has different names – e.g., "eBUS controller connected" or "ext. Regler" in the boiler's service menu)
  • Wireless models: Check the battery status in the room unit and perform re-pairing according to the manual

If the thermostat still does not work after these steps, it is possible that it is a hardware failure – either the thermostat or the boiler's communication board. The external sensor shows suspiciously low or high temperature – is the sensor broken?

It might be, but first check some simpler causes. The external sensor for calorMATIC thermostats is typically an NTC thermistor with a value of 10 kΩ at 25°C. Its resistance changes non-linearly according to the NTC characteristic curve. If the thermostat reports a temperature significantly different from the actual outside temperature:

  • Measure the sensor resistance with an ohmmeter at a known temperature (e.g., at 20°C the resistance should be around 12.5 kΩ, at 0°C around 32 kΩ, at −15°C around 67 kΩ) – if the value is out of range, the sensor is faulty
  • Check the sensor cable – breakage, short circuit or moisture in the connector are common causes
  • Check the terminals in the boiler – corrosion or loose contact can cause unstable measurement
  • If the sensor is OK, the problem may be in the thermostat itself (ADC input) – in this case, replacing the thermostat is usually simpler and cheaper

Why does the thermostat not shut off in summer, even when it is warm outside?

calorMATIC thermostats have a parameter for "minimum heating water temperature" and a "summer cutoff". If the summer cutoff is not set correctly or the outside temperature threshold for switching to summer mode is set too high, the boiler may continue to heat even at summer temperatures. A typical value for the summer cutoff is 18–22°C outside temperature – if it is above this value, the thermostat will not start the boiler for heating (domestic hot water functions normally).

In addition, some installations have floor heating with a low-temperature circuit, where incorrect setting of the minimum temperature may occur. Check the thermostat's menu for the "summer mode" or "summer operation" parameter and set it to at least 20°C, ideally 22°C.

Questions about replacement and substitutes

My old thermostat is broken – is it worth repairing or buying a new one?

This is a question we receive very often and the answer is not always clear-cut. It depends on several factors:

  • Age of the thermostat: If the thermostat is older than 10–15 years, the cost of repair (if possible at all) is close to the price of a new thermostat. In addition, after the repair, you have no warranty that another component will not fail in a year
  • Availability of spare parts: For some older models (e.g. the oldest calorMATIC before the numbering 360/392/430), spare parts are simply not available
  • Type of failure: If the problem is in the display or in the mechanical rotary control, the repair may make sense. If the problem is in the control board, the repair is usually not economically rational
  • Compatibility of the successor model: If your boiler is still working well, replacing the thermostat with a new model of the same range (e.g. from 392 to 430) is usually straightforward and simple

Can a Protherm Thermolink thermostat be used instead of a calorMATIC – and vice versa?

This is an interesting question, as both manufacturers belong to the Vaillant Group and their boilers share some technologies. In practice, however, it holds that calorMATIC thermostats are optimized for Vaillant boilers and Thermolink for Protherm boilers. There are situations where cross-compatibility may work (especially if both boilers and thermostats use the standard OpenTherm protocol), but it is not guaranteed and may result in limited functionality (e.g. the thermostat "sees" the boiler but does not have access to all parameters).

From the point of view of warranty and technical support, we recommend not to take risks and to stick to the combination of thermostat and boiler from the same manufacturer. Are there newer alternatives to calorMATIC thermostats?

Yes. Vaillant currently offers newer ranges – for example senSOmatic or vSMART with Wi-Fi and app. Protherm has analogous newer Thermolink models. If your boiler has an eBUS or OpenTherm interface, in most cases you can also connect a newer "smart" thermostat – you will get remote control via smartphone, better visualization and easier setup. For those who want to stick to proven solutions without dependence on apps and cloud, models such as calorMATIC 430f are still a very good and reliable choice.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Can I use the calorMATIC 392 or 430 thermostat without an outdoor temperature sensor?

Technically yes – the thermostat can be set to a mode "only room thermostat" without an outdoor sensor. In this case, however, you will lose the main advantage of the proportional thermostat, i.e. the predictive reaction to changes in outdoor temperature. The thermostat will function only as an "intelligent room thermostat" with a weekly schedule, without modulation of water temperature according to the weather. For a full proportional control, an outdoor sensor is essential.

Why does the thermostat not switch to night setback, even though I have set the time program?

Check whether the correct program is active – on calorMATIC thermostats, there are typically several program schedules (program 1, 2, 3) and it is necessary to select the active one. Also check whether a manual override ("override" or "Party mode") is active, which temporarily ignores the set program. A common mistake is incorrect setting of the clock – if the clock is shifted (e.g. after a power failure), the entire program is shifted by the corresponding number of hours.

What kind of battery should be used in the wireless room unit (e.g. 392f or 430f)?

Wireless room units of calorMATIC typically use two alkaline AA batteries (1.5V LR6). Battery life under normal operation is 1.5 to 3 years depending on the intensity of communication and room temperature. When the batteries are running low, the thermostat displays a warning (flashing battery symbol). We recommend replacing the batteries with a new pair of alkaline batteries and not using rechargeable NiMH batteries – their nominal voltage of 1.2V instead of 1.5V can cause communication instability or premature indication of low batteries.

The boiler is working, but the thermostat does not control the temperature – it only turns the boiler on and off. What is wrong?

This is a typical sign that the thermostat is not paired (bonded) with the boiler via eBUS, or the boiler still has its own internal regulator active. Check the boiler settings – in the service menu, it must be set that the external regulator is active (the parameter name varies depending on the boiler model). If the boiler "does not see" the thermostat on eBUS, it controls the temperature according to its own settings and the thermostat can influence it only via the demand/no demand signal – i.e. only switching on and off. The solution is to correctly set the boiler in the service menu, for which you need the service PIN of the boiler.

The calorMATIC 360f thermostat came out of the box – where is the outdoor sensor?

Vaillant calorMATIC 360f is delivered as a set: room unit (with display and batteries), receiver (RF receiver for installation in the boiler room / boiler assembly) and outdoor temperature sensor. The outdoor sensor is usually a smaller plastic box with a short cable and an NTC thermistor – it is mounted on the façade according to the rules described in the section on placement. Pairing the wireless room unit with the receiver is done after installation according to the instructions (typically by simultaneously pressing the pairing button on the receiver and confirming on the room unit).

Is it worth buying a new thermostat for an old boiler that is already 15 years old?

Here, several factors need to be considered. If the boiler is working reliably and the service company can still repair it (spare parts are available), a new thermostat can extend comfort and reduce heating costs for another few years. If, however, the boiler is giving repeated failures, requires expensive repairs or its efficiency has significantly decreased, a more sensible investment may be a new boiler together with a new thermostat. In any case, it is important that the boiler is currently in good technical condition – a new thermostat will not fix a broken heat exchanger or a worn burner.

Conclusion: what to remember when working with old thermostats

Older types of Vaillant calorMATIC and Protherm Thermolink thermostats are technically solid devices that work reliably for years when properly installed and set up. Most of the problems we encounter in practice are not real failures – they are the result of incorrect placement of the outdoor sensor, incorrectly set proportional curve, unpaired communication with the boiler or non-functional batteries.
