The MPPT controller uses an internal converter to adjust the V-A characteristic of the current source - the solar panel - so that it is optimal for charging the battery. It can therefore utilize the energy from solar panels much better than a PWM controller, which regulates charging only by pulse-limiting the direct connection between the solar panel and the battery, with the pulse width being proportional to the state of the battery being charged. In other words, the MPPT controller can generate an ideal voltage and current for charging the battery from a higher voltage and lower current of the source. For example, from 30 V and 5 A it generates approximately 15 V and 10 A. The efficiency of the V-A characteristic conversion is usually above 95%, so the losses are minimal, and the controllers can generally be adjusted to different types of batteries so that charging is as optimal as possible.
