How the Buderus Logasol solar thermal system works
A solar thermal system converts sunlight falling on the roof into usable heat for domestic hot water heating and, optionally, for space heating support. The heart of the system are Logasol collectors mounted on the roof or facade, which capture solar radiation and transfer it to the heat transfer fluid (solar fluid) flowing in their absorber. This heated fluid travels through piping down to the utility room, where in the storage tank (Logalux) it transfers its heat via a heat exchanger to the domestic water or the heating circuit. The cooled fluid then returns back to the collectors and the cycle repeats.
For this cycle to work reliably, precisely and safely all year round – in the hot summer as well as in freezing winter – the system needs several key components: a circulation pump that drives the fluid in the circuit, a controller that evaluates temperatures at the collector and in the storage tank and decides when the pump should run, safety and expansion elements that protect the system from overpressure in case of overheating, and last but not least, a quality frost-resistant solar fluid that will not freeze in winter and will withstand high temperatures on the collector in summer.
Why the pump station and connection kit are important
The collector alone, without a properly sized pump station and connection accessories, cannot function safely or efficiently. The pump station ensures controlled and measurable flow of the solar fluid, includes check valves preventing undesired circulation outside operation (for example at night, when the storage tank could otherwise be cooled back down), a pressure gauge and flow meter to monitor the circuit's condition, and a safety valve that safely releases overpressure if the maximum pressure is exceeded.
Connection and mounting kits, on the other hand, handle the mechanical and hydraulic interconnection of collectors with each other and with the pipework leading into the house – that is, sealing, compensating for thermal expansion of copper under large temperature differences (the collector can reach over 150 °C in summer while dropping below freezing in winter), and secure anchoring to the roof or structure. Without a quality connection, there is a risk of leaks, loss of expensive solar fluid, and in extreme cases even damage to the collector from overheating without a way to dissipate the heat.
The venting kit also plays an irreplaceable role in the system – air trapped in the circuit significantly reduces heat transfer efficiency and causes noise and corrosion. An automatic air vent combined with a shut-off valve (which is usually closed after the system has been balanced, to prevent steam from the hot fluid escaping) ensures that no air bubble remains in the circuit hindering circulation.
Solar Pump Set – pump station for the solar circuit
This set represents a complete Logasol KS0110 pump station for the solar circuit between the collector and the storage tank, complemented by surge protection and frost-resistant solar fluid – it is essentially the heart of the entire solar circuit, needed regardless of how many collectors are installed on the roof. The Logasol KS0110 pump station integrates a high-efficiency circulation pump, check valves, ball shut-off valves with thermometers on both the flow and return, a safety valve, a flow meter for setting and monitoring the solar fluid flow, and a venting element directly in the compact insulated body of the station, which simplifies both installation and later servicing.
The set also includes SP 1 surge protection, which protects the sensitive solar controller and pump from damage caused by atmospheric discharges – due to their position on the roof, solar collectors are exposed to an increased risk of induced surge voltage during storms, which is why this protection is an important part of a safe installation. Solar Fluid L20 is a ready-mixed fluid with frost resistance and corrosion inhibitors, ready to be filled directly into the circuit without any further mixing or dilution.
This set is usually combined with one of the SKN kits (for the 1st collector or for an additional collector) depending on the number of collectors on the roof – the pump station is always only one in the system regardless of how many collectors are connected to the circuit, as it drives the entire shared circuit.

Installation and commissioning
Installation of the solar circuit takes place in several steps: first the mounting structure and collectors are mechanically anchored to the roof or facade, then the collectors are interconnected with each other and with the pipework leading to the utility room using copper piping. After insulating the pipework (it is important to use insulation resistant to high temperatures and UV radiation on exterior sections), a pressure test of the circuit with air or nitrogen follows, verifying the tightness of all joints before filling with the expensive solar fluid.
After a successful pressure test, the circuit is filled and vented with solar fluid using a filling and flushing pump, the pre-charge pressure in the expansion vessel is set according to the height difference between the collector and the utility room, and finally the solar controller is configured – pump switch-on and switch-off temperatures, maximum storage tank temperature and any collector overheating protection. Only after this complete commissioning and functional testing does the installation company hand over the system for use, together with a test and setting protocol.

Do I need to buy the solar fluid separately, or is it included in the set?
It depends on the specific package – see the "What is included in the set" list below. If the fluid is not included in a given set, we recommend the original frost-resistant Buderus Solar Fluid, which is developed specifically for the temperature and pressure stresses of Logasol solar circuits.
How often does the solar fluid need to be replaced?
With proper system operation, the service life of a quality solar fluid is typically 5 to 7 years, after which it is recommended to replace it or at least have its concentration and pH checked by a service technician.
Is the installation suitable for a DIY project?
Connecting the solar circuit, pressure testing, filling with fluid and configuring the controller should always be carried out by a qualified technician experienced with solar systems – this involves working under pressure with hot media at heights, where an installation error can cause leaks or damage to the roof covering.
Can the system be expanded with additional collectors later?
Yes, that is exactly why Buderus offers separate kits for the first collector in a row and expansion kits for each additional collector – the system can thus be gradually sized according to current hot water demand or expanded later if demand increases.
What is the difference between the connection kit for the 1st collector and for an additional collector?
The kit for the first collector includes the complete hydraulic connection, including the inlet and outlet to the pipework leading into the house, and the basic mounting bracket for the entire row. The kit for each additional collector in the same row includes only the connecting and expansion parts needed to connect the neighboring collector, without duplicating already installed elements – it is therefore cheaper and only addresses the extension of an existing row.
Is regular maintenance necessary?
An annual check of the circuit pressure, the condition of the expansion vessel, the tightness of joints and the functionality of the pump is recommended, ideally during the regular annual service inspection of the heating system.
