When making a sliding canopy at home on a standard sewing machine, it is important to follow precise technical rules to avoid quick seam damage or incorrect sliding motion:
- Width calculation: The final width of the finished sail must be 2 cm smaller than the axial distance between the two parallel stainless steel cables. This 2 cm allowance is necessary for proper placement and free movement of the sliding runners.
- Length calculation (wave effect): If you want the shade sail to be completely flat when fully stretched, order the fabric length matching the exact length of the shading area. If you prefer an aesthetic drooping wave effect (balloon effect), add exactly 10% to the total length of the area.
- Hem construction: We recommend sewing the side edges of the sail, onto which the sliding runners are screwed, as a three-layer hem with a clear width of 2 cm.
- Choice of sewing thread: Use only 100% polyester outdoor thread (e.g. Gütermann Mara 30) for sewing. Never use cotton or pure silk threads, as they have no UV protection and the seams will completely disintegrate within a few months due to sun exposure.

Is this shade fabric also suitable as protection against heavy rain?
