The stopper has two positions for holding the guide cable, which change its clamping force. In the first (free position), the cable sits in the first notch, allowing the stopper to slide freely without falling off. In the second (braking function), the cable clicks into the second notch. In this mode, the cord lock holds the sail in place while still allowing movement using a control pole.
