Detailed information

Product detailed description

Smooth and quiet movement of the shading sail without jamming

The Peddy Shield stainless steel cable, 14 meters long with a 2 mm diameter, forms the load-bearing part of the entire shading cable system. This special cable is designed as a replacement or addition for the tensioning technology of sun sails. Unlike common industrial cables, it has an exceptionally smooth surface, which reduces friction and allows the runners to be moved easily by hand or with a control rod.

First-class steel cable construction

The secret of this cable's perfect sliding motion lies in its 1x19 industrial specification. The manufacturing process involves precisely winding 19 extremely fine stainless steel wires around one central guide wire in a single direction. The result is an ideally uniform and smooth microstructure.

Difference compared to a classic cable: Common steel cables are twisted from several separate wire strands. Microscopic ridges and a rough surface arise between these bundles, acting like a file – plastic runners wear down quickly on it, get stuck, and are destroyed. The Peddy Shield system guarantees smooth sliding without destroying the plastic components.

Professional installation tips and important notes

To achieve maximum comfort in everyday use of the shading system, we recommend applying proven practical procedures during installation:

  • Clean cut without fraying: The cable is supplied whole (coiled into a ring) so you can shorten it to the exact length yourself. For cutting at home, use sharp side cutters, and after clamping the cable, strike them firmly with a hammer. This will give you a perfectly straight end that can be easily threaded into the tensioners .
  • Lubrication trick (the "like butter" effect): Lubricate the cable immediately after the first installation, or if the runners start to show resistance over time. Just apply a few drops of pure sewing machine or bicycle oil onto a cloth and wipe it along the entire length of the cable. You'll be surprised how easily the sail will slide along the cable.
  • Beware of contact corrosion: The chrome-nickel stainless steel used is completely immune to atmospheric rust. However, it must never come into direct contact with other metals, especially ordinary galvanized steel (e.g. cheap carabiners or hooks from hobby stores). Stainless steel triggers an aggressive galvanic reaction with galvanized steel, causing the material to rust within 24 hours.

NOTE: The 14-meter length is optimally sized to shade one pergola section up to a maximum length of 7 meters (creating one parallel pair of guide cables).

Technical data and material specification

  • Total cable length in the package: 14 meters (in one continuous piece)
  • Cable diameter: Exactly 2.0 mm (calibrated for original runners and brakes )
  • Material: First-class stainless steel (resistant to acid rain and salts)
  • Weaving/braiding technology: Type 1x19 (central core wound with 19 smooth microwires)
  • Surface finish: Extra glossy, smooth, with a reduced coefficient of friction

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - Stainless steel cable 14m - diameter 2 mm

Can I use this cable with runners from other manufacturers?

The cable has an exact diameter of 2 mm and an extra smooth structure. It is primarily designed for original Peddy Shield sliding runners. If you have runners from another manufacturer designed for a 2 mm cable, it will work, but the smoothness of movement will depend on the internal groove of the specific hook.

Why can't I use a cheaper cable from a regular hardware store?

Common cables from hardware stores are woven from thicker cable bundles. Their surface is rough and wavy. Plastic runners constantly hit the grooves on such a surface, get stuck, and due to high friction, the plastic interior of the runner quickly gets damaged.

What oil is best for lubricating the cable?

Use only light, clear oils, such as sewing machine oil, fine bicycle oil, or watchmaker's oil. Do not use motor oil or cooking oil, as they are sticky, attract dust, and could soil the shading material.

Can this stainless steel cable rust over time?

The stainless steel cable itself does not corrode due to its high content of alloying elements in the atmosphere. Corrosion can occur if it is mechanically connected to components made of ordinary or galvanized steel. Always make sure that all connected components (screws, eyelets) are also made of stainless steel.
