• Why are low-temperature (atmospheric) boilers no longer commonly sold as new units? Since 2018, EU legislation (the ErP/Ecodesign Directive) has in practice banned the production of new atmospheric gas boilers because of their lower efficiency and higher emissions compared with condensing technology. That is why only the last available units of this PROTHERM model remain in stock, usually intended as a replacement for the same type of boiler in an existing installation (e.g. into an older chimney, where switching to a condensing boiler would also require modifying the flue).
• When does it make sense to choose this type of boiler instead of a condensing one? Mainly when you are only replacing the boiler itself in an existing installation with an older masonry chimney, where adapting it for condensing operation (e.g. lining) would be costly or structurally demanding, and speed/simplicity of replacement takes priority over long-term fuel savings.
• Can I switch straight to a condensing boiler? Yes, in most cases this is more advantageous in the long run - condensing technology achieves higher efficiency and lower gas consumption. However, it usually requires modifying the flue (a concentric flue through the wall/roof instead of the original masonry chimney) - we recommend having a professional assessment carried out on site.
• What is the difference in space and ventilation requirements? Atmospheric boilers draw combustion air directly from the room in which they are installed - that room must therefore meet a minimum volume and have an assured air supply (e.g. a ventilation grille, a gap under the door) in accordance with applicable standards.
• Can I install the boiler myself? No, connection to the gas supply, the electrical network and the flue must be carried out by a person with the relevant professional qualifications, and the boiler must then be commissioned and tested.
