The MPPT controller uses an internal converter to adjust the V-A characteristic of the current source - solar panel - so that it is optimal for battery charging. It can thus use the energy from solar panels much better than a PWM controller, which regulates charging only by pulse limitation of the direct connection between the solar panel and the battery, where the pulse width is proportional to the state of the battery being charged. In other words, the MPPT controller can generate the ideal voltage and current for charging the battery from a higher voltage and lower current of the source. For example, from 30V and 5A it will generate approx. 15V and 10A. The conversion efficiency of the V-A characteristic is usually above 95%, so the losses are minimal, and the controllers can generally be adapted to various types of batteries so that charging is as optimal as possible.
