The VA 2-ADP 050-100K is a condensate collection tray from the accessories range of the Vaillant aroVAIR product line, structurally shared by both larger power versions of the cassette fancoil KN series – the VA 2-050 KN model (5 kW) and the more powerful VA 2-100 KN model (10 kW). Since both of these units share the same footprint mounting platform of 840 × 840 mm, the manufacturer designed a single common collection tray for them, which simplifies the selection of accessories and reduces the number of stock items needed for a complete installation of both power classes.

This component addresses an essential technical requirement of every fancoil operated in cooling mode – when chilled water flows through the water heat exchanger, air humidity from the surrounding air condenses on its fins. Given the significantly higher rated air flow of both compatible power classes (up to 1,360 m³/h for VA 2-050 KN and up to 1,950 m³/h for VA 2-100 KN), the amount of condensate generated by these larger units is noticeably higher than with the smaller 3.5 kW model, which is why this tray is structurally designed for a correspondingly higher capacity of condensate collection and drainage.

Why a larger tray is essential for these power classes

The amount of condensate generated on the fancoil's heat exchanger is directly related to the volume of air that flows through it, and to the temperature difference between the exchanger surface and the dew point of the surrounding air. For the VA 2-050 KN and especially the VA 2-100 KN models, which handle a significantly larger volume of air than the smaller 3.5 kW model, a noticeably higher condensate production is therefore expected at full cooling output. If an undersized collection container were used with these more powerful units, there would be a risk of it filling up faster or having insufficient capacity to collect the condensate at peak cooling output, which would increase the risk of overflow into the space above the suspended ceiling. That is exactly why the manufacturer offers a separate, larger tray for this power category, different from the smaller version intended for the 3.5 kW model.

Installation

The tray is installed during the mounting of the unit body, before the final cover panel is hung – it is placed under the heat exchanger so that it catches all dripping condensate, and is connected to a drain hose or pipe routed with a slope towards the nearest drainage point. Given the higher expected volume of condensate at these power classes, we recommend paying special attention to the sizing and slope of the drain pipe so that even during peak summer operation of both units (especially when combining multiple VA 2-100 KN units in one building), the drainage can carry away the entire produced volume without risk of backflow or overflow. The unit body and the tray must be in a horizontal position (or with a slight slope in the direction of drainage) to prevent uneven collection of condensate.

Maintenance

The collection tray and its drain connection require regular inspection of patency, especially before the start of the summer cooling season. For larger installations with a higher volume of condensate, somewhat more frequent inspection is recommended than for the smaller 3.5 kW model, ideally also during the season during intensive operation, since a larger volume of water also increases the speed of any potential accumulation of dirt or biofilm in the drainage system. A clogged or blocked condensate drain is one of the most common causes of leaks and water escape from cassette units during the summer season, so this inspection should not be omitted from the annual service check.

Compatibility

This tray covers both larger power classes of the KN cassette line – the 5 kW model VA 2-050 KN and the 10 kW model VA 2-100 KN, similarly to the common cover panel code 8000018476 and the 3-way valve set code 8000022077 for the same pair of models. For the smaller, 3.5 kW power class (model VA 2-035 KN), a separate, smaller tray with code 0010035306 (VAZ-035-G1) is intended, which corresponds to the smaller footprint of that unit body. When completing an order, it is therefore necessary to select the tray that exactly matches the power class of the fancoil body being installed.

Overflow safety

For larger installations, where the risk of damage to the building structure due to a possible overflow of condensate is economically more sensitive (for example representative premises, offices or commercial premises with more expensive surface finishes), it is recommended to consider adding a safety float switch, which automatically shuts off the unit's cooling function when the level in the tray is exceeded. Such an additional safety solution should be discussed with a designer or installation company already at the installation design stage, especially with multiple units of this power class in a single building.

Condensate drainage solutions in larger installations

Drainage of condensate from the collection tray is handled either by gravity (a hose/pipe with a constant slope towards the nearest drainage point), or using a condensate pump where structural conditions do not allow sufficient slope. For larger installations with multiple VA 2-050 KN or VA 2-100 KN units in one building (typically office spaces, showrooms or commercial premises), several collection trays are often combined and connected to a common collection pipe leading to a single central drainage point or to one larger condensate pump. The design of such a common drainage system should take into account the sum of the maximum possible volume of condensate from all connected units during their simultaneous full cooling operation, in order to avoid overloading the capacity of the common pipe or pump.

When designing, it is also advisable to consider placing cleaning or inspection openings along the route of the drain pipe, especially for longer or more branched routes, so that easy inspection and possible clearing is possible in the future without having to dismantle the entire route. This consideration is more important for larger installations with multiple cassette units than for a simple residential installation with a single fancoil, since the length and complexity of the common drainage system grows with the number of connected units.

Damage prevention in commercial and representative premises

Due to their power output, the VA 2-050 KN and especially the VA 2-100 KN models are often deployed precisely in office, retail or other commercial premises, where any potential damage to a suspended ceiling or ceiling structure caused by a condensate leak can be associated with higher repair costs than in a typical residential installation – for example due to more demanding surface finishes, the need to interrupt operation during repairs, or the risk of damage to equipment located below the affected part of the ceiling. A functional, correctly sized and regularly maintained collection tray is therefore an even more important part of the overall installation in these environments than in home use, and the investment in its regular inspection pays for itself many times over in the event of preventing possible damage.
