The safety (relief) valve with an opening pressure of 4 bar is an original part of the safety equipment of the heating circuit of Vaillant ecoTEC plus wall-mounted condensing boilers in higher output ranges. It is a brass fitting that, when the set pressure in the system is exceeded, automatically opens a flow path and releases excess heating water, thereby preventing an uncontrolled pressure increase that could damage the boiler's heat exchanger, pipework, radiators, or other components of the heating system. The relief valve belongs to the so-called safety equipment of the heat source, the presence and functionality of which is required by the applicable technical standard STN EN 12828 for hot water heating systems.

The value of 4 bar is one of two commonly used opening pressure values for boilers of this output range (the other being the 6 bar variant) – the choice between them depends on the specific configuration of the system, particularly the static height of the heating circuit (e.g. multi-storey buildings with a high vertical distribution) and the set operating pressure of the expansion vessel. Why the relief valve is essential

Every closed hot water heating system with a heat source (boiler) must, by law and technical standards, have functional safety equipment installed, an integral part of which is precisely the relief valve. Without a functional relief valve, in the event of a circulation pump failure, a faulty expansion vessel, a clogged filter, or another operational deviation, there is a risk of an uncontrolled pressure increase in the system, which could cause mechanical damage to the boiler's heat exchanger, pipe bursting, or radiator damage. The relief valve is therefore the system's last safety fuse, and its presence and regular functional inspection are prerequisites for safe operation as well as a condition for inspection and service records.

For higher output boilers installed in larger buildings with more extensive pipework, the volume of water in the system is significantly higher than in small residential installations, which also means higher risk and greater consequences of any potential overpressure. This is precisely why the manufacturer supplies the relief valve as a separate, precisely specified part with a defined opening value, which must correspond to the specific hydraulic scheme of the given system.

Installation and connection

Installation of the relief valve may only be performed by an authorised technician qualified for the installation of heating and gas equipment. The valve is fitted into the safety group of the boiler circuit according to the manufacturer's installation manual, and it is essential to ensure a free and safe discharge of the released water – usually via a drain hose or pipe leading to a location where any leakage of hot water will not cause property damage or endanger persons. Commissioning also includes a functional test of the valve, during which the correct opening and re-closing of the fitting is manually verified.

After initial installation, as well as as part of each regular annual boiler service inspection, it is recommended to check the functionality of the relief valve – by manually turning the test lever (if equipped with one) or by another procedure according to the manufacturer's instructions, in order to verify that the mechanism is not clogged with deposits and will actually respond if needed.

Compatibility

This relief valve with an opening pressure of 4 bar is intended for the heating circuit of Vaillant ecoTEC plus wall-mounted condensing boilers in higher output ranges (48–65 kW and 80–120 kW). The recommended inspection interval for the relief valve generally coincides with the regular annual boiler service inspection interval. In operations with more intensive system use (e.g. boiler rooms of apartment buildings with year-round hot water operation), the service technician may, based on their own assessment, recommend a more frequent inspection of the safety equipment's functionality.

Why choose an original Vaillant part

The original Vaillant relief valve has a precisely defined and manufacturer-tested opening value that corresponds to the declared parameters of the boiler and the safety group. Using an unverified or uncertified replacement for a safety element of this type poses an unreasonable risk given its function of protecting the system and persons. Difference between the 4 bar and 6 bar variants

Vaillant offers two variants of the relief valve for this boiler output range, differing solely in the opening pressure – 4 bar and 6 bar. The choice between them is made already at the design stage of the heating system and is based primarily on the following factors:

  • Static height of the system: in multi-storey buildings with a high vertical distribution, a higher static pressure already occurs in the resting (unheated) state, which may require a higher opening pressure value of the relief valve to avoid unnecessary opening during normal pressure fluctuations,
  • Expansion vessel setting: the filling and operating pressure of the diaphragm expansion vessel must be consistent with the opening value of the relief valve, otherwise there is a risk of either frequent unnecessary water release or insufficient reserve in the event of an actual fault,
  • Type of building: for apartment buildings, office buildings, or industrial halls with more extensive piping, the 6 bar variant is more often chosen, while for more compact systems with lower static height, 4 bar is generally sufficient.

This part (4 bar variant) is therefore particularly suitable for systems with lower static height and normal operating pressure of the heating circuit, where it provides sufficient safety margin without an increased risk of unnecessary water release during minor pressure fluctuations caused, for example, by thermal expansion of water during system start-up.

Ordering and verification of the correct value

Before ordering the relief valve, we always recommend verifying which opening pressure value is prescribed for the specific system – this information should be part of the heating system's design documentation or the inspection report from the last service inspection. If the documentation is not available (for example, for an older installation), we recommend having the parameters verified on-site by an authorised Vaillant service technician, since an incorrectly chosen opening pressure value can negatively affect both the safety and comfort of the system's operation.

The part is supplied as a complete fitting ready for installation into the safety group of the boiler circuit, including the necessary seals.
