Product detailed description

Shut-off valves for Vaillant ecoTEC plus wall-mounted boilers, 48 to 120 kW

This set of shut-off valves is an original Vaillant accessory intended for wall-mounted condensing boilers from the higher-output ecoTEC plus ranges – specifically for models in the 48 to 65 kW range (for example VU 486/5-5 and VU 656/5-5) and the follow-up higher-output range of 80 to 120 kW (VU 806/5-5, VU 1006/5-5, VU 1206/5-5). This is a newer design of shut-off fittings that mount directly onto the boiler's connection ports (heating circuit, and depending on the specific setup possibly also the gas connection) and allow the boiler unit to be safely disconnected from the rest of the system without having to drain the entire heating system.

What shut-off valves on the boiler are for

For higher-output boilers, which are typically installed in boiler rooms of apartment buildings, commercial and industrial premises, it is practically essential to be able to disconnect the boiler unit itself from the piping system at any time – for example during a service intervention, component replacement, or planned shutdown of one boiler in a cascade configuration without having to shut down the entire system. Without shut-off valves directly at the boiler, every such intervention would require draining a large part of or the entire heating system, which, given the water volumes in apartment building systems, represents a significantly longer and more costly service intervention. This set is therefore among the standard, and in many cases practically essential, accessories for professional installation of ecoTEC plus boilers in the higher power ranges.

  • Compatibility: direct installation on the connection ports of the higher-output ecoTEC plus boiler unit (no piping modification required)
  • Optional accessory: optional thermal insulation for the valves (sold separately, code 0020249126) against heat loss and condensation on cooler sections of piping
  • Maximum operating pressure: corresponds to the operating parameters of ecoTEC plus boilers (up to 6 bar depending on the model)
  • Country of origin: Germany / EU (original Vaillant part)

Installation

Installation of the shut-off valves must be carried out exclusively by an authorised person qualified for the installation of gas and heating equipment, usually as part of the first installation of the boiler or when replacing an older model. The valves are connected directly to the boiler unit's connection ports, creating the first shut-off point right at the heat source – ahead of the manifold, hydraulic separator, or other system components. During installation, care must be taken to observe the correct flow direction (as marked on the valve body), to tighten the connections sufficiently using suitable sealing material, and to ensure that the valve lever remains freely accessible and easy to operate once installed, even during operation of the system (for example behind a boiler room cover or casing).

We recommend testing the valves several times after initial installation (closing and reopening them) to verify their functionality and tightness under the system's operating pressure. During subsequent service interventions, when the boiler is disconnected from the system, close the valves gradually and carefully to avoid water hammer in the piping, especially with the larger diameters and higher flow rates typical of boilers in the 80–120 kW power range.

When you need this set

  • When newly installing an ecoTEC plus wall-mounted boiler in a higher power range, where the design requires the ability to disconnect the boiler from the system.
  • When replacing an older version of the boiler with a new model (in combination with the replacement kit, code 0020256405), when the original connection fittings cannot be reused or no longer meet current requirements.
  • When building a cascade configuration of multiple boilers, where it must be possible to shut down each unit independently of the others without affecting the entire system.
  • When modernising a boiler room, where the original fittings are considered worn out or no longer meeting current safety requirements.

Compatibility and related accessories

This set of shut-off valves is designed directly for the connection interface of ecoTEC plus boilers in the 48–65 kW and 80–120 kW power ranges. When ordering, we recommend always verifying the exact model and power range of your boiler, as connection dimensions and ports may vary slightly between the different power ranges. To reduce heat loss and protect against condensation on the surface of the fittings in cooler boiler room spaces, we recommend supplementing the set with the separately available thermal insulation for the valves. In cascade configurations with multiple boilers, it is advisable to use the same shut-off valves consistently on each boiler unit, which simplifies servicing of the entire system.

Maintenance

Ball shut-off valves generally do not require complex regular maintenance; however, as part of the annual boiler service inspection, it is recommended to check their movement (occasionally fully opening and closing them prevents possible "sticking" if left in the same position for a long time), the tightness of the connections, and the condition of any insulation. If a leak or difficulty operating the lever is detected, we recommend contacting a service technician, as this is part of the pressurised boiler room system.

Why choose an original Vaillant part

Using original Vaillant shut-off valves guarantees precise dimensional and material compatibility with the boiler unit's connection interface, which is not always guaranteed with non-original or universal fittings. The original part also meets the same material quality and sealing requirements as the boiler itself, minimising the risk of leaks or premature wear at the critical connection point between the heat source and the system.

Application context – ecoTEC plus boilers in higher power ranges

The ecoTEC plus range in the 48–65 kW power band (models VU 486/5-5 with an output of 8.7–48 kW and VU 656/5-5 with an output of 12.2–63.5 kW at a temperature gradient of 50/30 °C) represents a transition from ordinary domestic condensing boilers to equipment intended for larger buildings – apartment buildings, office buildings, smaller commercial premises, or larger family houses with high heat loss. The follow-up 80–120 kW range (VU 806/5-5, VU 1006/5-5, VU 1206/5-5) is clearly a commercial solution, in which individual boiler units are commonly combined into cascade configurations with a total output of up to several hundred kilowatts. It is precisely at this scale of output and system water volume that the issue of simple and safe disconnection of an individual boiler unit from the rest of the system takes on a completely different weight than with a small domestic boiler – a shutdown without shut-off valves would mean draining and refilling the entire extensive system, which, given a volume of hundreds of litres of water, is time-consuming and costly, and also increases the risk of air ingress and subsequent corrosion in the system.

Why a ball valve and not another type of fitting

For shutting off connections directly at the boiler unit, ball valves (ball cocks) with lever control are most commonly used in practice, as they provide a quick, unambiguous switch between fully open and fully closed states with minimal pressure resistance in the open position. Compared to, for example, rising-stem valves, ball valves have the advantage of easier visual status checking (the lever position directly corresponds to open/closed) and lower maintenance, which is a valued feature during service interventions in operating boiler rooms – a technician can see at a glance whether the fitting is open or closed, without having to count spindle turns or read a scale position.

Procedure for service shutdown of the boiler using this set

  1. Check that the boiler is switched off and cooled down (or at least not in active output mode) to avoid the risk of scalding when handling the fittings.
  2. Gradually, not abruptly, close both shut-off fittings (both the supply and return of the heating circuit) by turning the lever into a position transverse to the direction of the pipe.
  3. Check the pressure drop on the boiler or system pressure gauge – if the pressure remains stable, the boiler is safely isolated from the rest of the system.
  4. Depending on the nature of the intervention, drain the small residual amount of water trapped between the valves and the boiler unit through the drain cock, if included in the setup.
  5. After completing the service intervention, gradually open both fittings, vent the boiler unit, and check the tightness of the connections before putting the boiler back into operation.

This procedure allows most common service tasks (pump replacement, burner inspection, electrode replacement, servicing the expansion vessel in the boiler unit) to be carried out without having to intervene in the rest of the heating system, shortening downtime and reducing the risk of errors when refilling a large system.

Related accessories for the 48–120 kW power ranges

This set of shut-off valves is often ordered together with other accessories for the same power range of ecoTEC plus boilers – primarily safety relief valves (in versions up to 4 or up to 6 bar, depending on the set operating pressure of the system), a high-efficiency circulation pump for the boiler circuit for outputs of 80, 100 and 120 kW, or thermal insulation for this pump. When completely replacing an older version of the boiler with a new model, a specialised replacement kit is also used to address differences in the connection interface between the older and newer generation of ecoTEC plus boilers. We recommend considering the complete set of these accessories at once when planning the installation or renovation of a boiler room, to avoid additional orders and potential delays during installation.

Safety and legislative context

Handling shut-off fittings on a gas appliance and on a pressurised heating system is subject to professional qualification requirements under the applicable legislation of the Slovak Republic (in particular the decree on professional competence for carrying out activities on designated technical equipment). The sale of this set therefore does not include authorisation to install it without the relevant qualification – we recommend always entrusting installation to an authorised Vaillant service partner or another qualified professional, who will also confirm the correctness of the connection and the tightness of the system with an inspection report.

Packaging and delivery

The set of shut-off valves is supplied in original Vaillant packaging, complete and ready for installation without the need to purchase additional connecting elements (apart from standard sealing material as customary for the installation company). Due to its compact dimensions and low weight, the shipment can usually be delivered even via parcel pickup points, which speeds up delivery compared to bulkier components such as boiler units or storage tanks. When ordering, we recommend stating the exact type and output of your boiler in the notes, so that we can point out in advance any specifics of installation for your particular model, if applicable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do these valves also fit lower-output ecoTEC plus boilers (up to 35 kW)?

This set is intended specifically for the 48–120 kW power ranges. Lower-output boilers generally have a different connection interface and their own accessories, so always check compatibility with your model before ordering.

Is valve insulation also needed, or is the set alone sufficient?

The set alone is fully functional even without insulation. Insulation is recommended especially in cooler boiler room spaces, where it reduces heat loss and prevents moisture condensation on the surface of the fittings.

Can I install the valves myself?

Installation on the boiler unit and connection to the heating (or gas) circuit may only be carried out by an authorised person qualified for the installation and servicing of gas and heating equipment.

Are the valves suitable for a cascade configuration of multiple boilers?

Yes, in cascade configurations the ability to disconnect a single boiler from the system without shutting down the others is particularly important, and shut-off valves on each unit are therefore a standard solution.

What is the warranty on this set?

Original Vaillant accessories carry a standard warranty of 2 years from the date of sale/commissioning.

Can this set also be used to shut off the boiler's gas connection?

This set is primarily intended for shutting off the heating circuit connections at the boiler unit. Shutting off the gas connection is handled by a separate, legislation-defined shut-off cock on the gas pipe ahead of the boiler, which is part of the gas installation and is installed in accordance with applicable regulations for gas equipment.

What should I do if the valve lever becomes harder to turn over time?

Ball valves that remain in one position for a long time may develop slight deposits from the heating water at the seal. We recommend having the fitting checked during the regular annual inspection and, if necessary, carefully cycling it a few times between its end positions, or replacing the fitting if movement remains permanently stiff.
