• Why are low-temperature (atmospheric) boilers no longer commonly sold as new units? European legislation (the ErP/Ecodesign directive) has, in practice, banned the production of new atmospheric gas boilers since 2018 due to their lower efficiency and higher emissions compared to condensing technology. That's why the range now only includes the last available units of this BUDERUS model, usually as a replacement for the same type of boiler in an existing installation (e.g. into an older chimney, where switching to a condensing boiler would also require modifying the flue).
• When does it make sense to choose this type of boiler instead of a condensing one? Above all when you are only replacing the boiler itself in an existing installation with an older masonry chimney, where adapting it for condensing operation (e.g. lining) would be financially or structurally demanding, and the speed/simplicity of the replacement takes priority over long-term fuel savings.
• Can I switch directly to a condensing boiler? Yes, in most cases this is more advantageous in the long run - condensing technology achieves higher efficiency and lower gas consumption. However, it usually requires modifying the flue gas extraction (a coaxial flue through the wall/roof instead of the original masonry chimney) - we recommend having a professional assessment carried out on site.
• What is the difference in space and ventilation requirements? Atmospheric boilers draw combustion air directly from the room in which they are installed - that room must therefore meet a minimum volume requirement and have an air supply (e.g. a ventilation grille, a gap under the door) in accordance with applicable standards.
• Can I install the boiler myself? No, connection to the gas supply, electrical network, and flue gas extraction must be carried out by a person with the appropriate professional qualification; the boiler must then be commissioned and tested.
