Common DEVIrail faults – the dryer does not heat up, overheats or the control does not work
The electric towel dryer DEVIrail belongs to reliable and long-term tested products. Despite this, we encounter a whole range of faults and situations in practice, when the customer calls or writes with the question "why is my dryer not heating up?" or "the thermostat is not responding, what should I do?". From dozens of similar cases in customer service, we have collected the most common causes, diagnostic procedures and – where possible – also the way to solve the problem by yourself without calling an electrician. Where it is not possible, we will say it openly.
This article focuses on three main problem areas: the dryer does not heat up at all, the dryer overheats or its control does not work (thermostat, timer, remote control). Each of these areas has several possible causes and each cause requires a different solution. We will go through them systematically, from the simplest and most common to more complex service cases.
Why the DEVIrail dryer does not heat up at all
This is by far the most common complaint. The customer turns on the dryer, waits five minutes – and the pipes are cold. Or the dryer has been working fine for months, and suddenly it stops working. The causes vary depending on the situation and it is important to distinguish them.
1. Power outage or tripped circuit breaker
This sounds trivial, but in practice it is the most common cause – and at the same time the easiest to solve. Electric DEVIrail dryers are usually connected to a socket with a protective pin (Schuko type), which must be protected by its own circuit in the distribution board. If the circuit breaker has tripped (for example, due to an overload, storm or short circuit somewhere else in the circuit), the dryer simply has no current.
Procedure: Check the distribution board. Look for a tripped circuit breaker, typically labeled "Bathroom" or "Bathroom sockets". If the circuit breaker keeps tripping, it is not a problem with the dryer – it is a problem with the electrical installation (too weak circuit breaker, overloaded circuit, another load on the same circuit). 2. Socket with a differential circuit breaker (FI) – tripped protection
In the bathroom, installation of a residual current device (differential circuit breaker, so-called FI) is mandatory. These devices sometimes trip at the first switching on of the dryer, if there is a current leakage to ground in the wiring – which can be a result of condensation of moisture at the first heating, or incorrect wiring of the socket. The RESET button on the FI circuit breaker must be pressed, but if the FI trips again, it is necessary to look for the cause – either in the wiring or directly in the dryer.
3. Internal thermostat is set too low
DEVIrail models are equipped with a built-in thermostat, which regulates the surface temperature of the dryer. If the thermostat is set to a low value (e.g. 30 °C) and the room temperature is only slightly lower, the dryer will heat up only slightly – it may feel cold to the touch, but technically it is working. Check the thermostat setting. The typical range of DEVIrail thermostats is 10 – 60 °C. A setting below 35 °C is practically useless for most bathrooms in summer months.
4. Timer is set to an inactive time period
If your DEVIrail is equipped with a built-in timer (or is controlled by an external programmable thermostat), it may happen that an "off" period is currently active. Customers sometimes set the timer to operate only in the morning and evening – and when they come home during the day, they think the dryer is broken. Solution: check the timer setting. 5. Broken supply cable or damaged plug
DEVIrail is mounted on the wall and its cable (usually 1.5 m long, HO5VV-F 3×1.0 mm²) leads to the socket. The cable can be mechanically damaged – most often when compressed by furniture, during tile installation or during unprofessional installation (cable was bent too sharply). Plug damage is less common, but it also happens – especially if someone pulls the dryer by the cable instead of the plug.
Visual inspection of the cable: check the entire length of the cable, look for cuts, sharp bends, overheated insulation. If you find damage, the cable must be replaced – this work must be carried out by a qualified electrician or an authorized service, because it involves working on an electrical device.
6. Heating element failure (heating element)
Inside the dryer bars is a heating cable or heating element. If it has reached the end of its life, or if a short circuit has occurred (e.g. due to overheating), the heating element can be destroyed. In such a case, the dryer does not produce any heat despite the power supply working and the thermostat being set correctly. Diagnosis: if you have a multimeter available, you can measure the resistance between phase and neutral (with the dryer disconnected from the power supply!) – the value should correspond to the rated power (P = U²/R, so for example at 600 W and 230 V, R = 230²/600 ≈ 88 Ω). A value close to infinity means a broken circuit. This repair is a service matter.
Why the DEVIrail dryer overheats or is too hot to touch
The second type of fault is the opposite extreme: the dryer works, but its surface is dangerously hot to touch, or the dryer automatically disconnects (thermal fuse trips). This is less common, but potentially more dangerous, so it deserves a detailed explanation.
Maximum surface temperature of DEVIrail – what is normal
DEVIrail dryers are designed so that their surface temperature is safe for human touch. The standard range is typically 30 – 60 °C on the surface of the pipes, with a normal operating temperature of around 50 – 55 °C on the surface of the radiator when the thermostat is set to 50 °C. A temperature above 60 °C on the surface of the pipes is basically incorrect and the cause must be determined.
Covered dryer – the most common cause of overheating
This is the situation we encounter most often: the customer left a thick bath towel (towel, robe) hanging on the dryer, covering the entire surface of the radiator. The temperature under the fabric rises much faster than in an open bathroom, as heat is not transferred to the air. The thermostat, which measures the temperature inside the pipe or on the surface, may still consider the situation normal – until the thermal fuse trips.
Recommended rule: never hang a towel covering more than 60-70 % of the radiator surface on the dryer. If you want to dry thick materials (robes, fleece blankets), increase the dryer's power and ensure good air circulation in the room. Never dry plastic items, rubber mats, or synthetic materials with a low melting point on the dryer.
Thermostat failure – thermostat does not turn off at the set temperature
The thermostat can fail in two ways: it can get stuck in the "on" position (and the dryer continuously heats without regulation), or it can get stuck in the "off" position (and the dryer does not heat at all). A thermostat stuck in the "on" position leads to overheating. Symptom: the dryer continuously heats without cycling off, and after some time, the surface becomes excessively hot. Solution: replace the thermostat – a service issue, as it is part of the electrical device.
Thermal fuse (thermostat limiter) – what it is and when it trips
DEVIrail models have a built-in safety feature: a thermal fuse (called thermal cutout, TC in English). It is a one-way or resettable safety device that disconnects the power to the heating element at a temperature of around 85 °C (the value varies by model). If this fuse trips, the dryer stops heating – and the customer interprets this as "the dryer is broken".
Resettable thermal fuse: after cooling down (usually 20 – 30 minutes), it is possible to turn the dryer on again. If overheating is not an isolated incident, it is a sign of a system error. One-way (non-resettable) thermal fuse: after tripping, the dryer is permanently non-functional until this part is replaced in the service.
Inadequate Ventilation in the Bathroom
If the bathroom is small and poorly ventilated, the overall air temperature in the room can rise during prolonged operation of the dryer to levels where the thermostat turns off the heating and then turns it back on – but if the air is too warm, the cycle is too short and the device appears to be "overheating". Solution: ensure bathroom ventilation (window, fan), or reduce the thermostat setting.
DEVIrail control not working – thermostat, timer, display
The third category of problems concerns control elements. DEVIrail models differ in the level of sophistication of their controls – from a simple manual potentiometer (rotary knob) through a digital display with thermostat to models with WiFi control and integration into DEVI Smart systems.
Rotary knob does not respond or turns freely
Mechanical thermostats with a rotary knob can degrade after years of use – contacts wear out or oxidize, and the knob turns without changing the setting. Diagnosis: try turning the knob to maximum. If the temperature changes, the problem is in the middle of the range (worn potentiometer). Solution: replace the thermostat at a service center.
Digital display is frozen or shows nothing
Models with a digital display can occasionally freeze – usually after a power outage or due to a combination of electrostatic discharge and humidity. The first thing to try is a reset: disconnect the dryer from the power supply for at least 30 seconds (for some models we also recommend 5 minutes), then reconnect it. Most DEVIrail models go through an initialization sequence upon reconnection and return to the last set state.
If the display still shows nothing or only nonsensical characters (the display flickers randomly) after the reset, it may be a problem with the control board. This is a service issue.
Timer lost settings after a power outage
Most DEVIrail models do not have a backup battery to retain timer settings. During a power outage (even a short one – a few seconds is enough), the timer settings are erased and the clock returns to 00:00. This is standard behavior, not a fault. Solution: after each power outage, it is necessary to reset the current time and weekly program. If you want to avoid this problem in the future, there are external programmable plug-in timers with their own battery backup, which can be connected between the dryer and the power outlet. This is a cheap and effective solution for areas with unstable power supply.
Dryer does not respond to the remote control or WiFi app
More advanced DEVIrail models can be integrated into the DEVI Smart system and controlled via an app. If the app does not control the dryer, proceed as follows:
- Check whether the dryer is connected to power and physically functional (indicator light, display).
- Check the WiFi connection – the dryer must be within range of a 2.4 GHz router (not 5 GHz, which is not supported by most IoT devices).
- Check whether the DEVI Smart app is up to date – an outdated version may have errors in the communication protocol.
- Perform a "connection reset" – disconnect the dryer from power, wait 30 seconds, reconnect it, and start pairing in the app from the beginning.
- If none of this helps, check the status of the DEVI Smart cloud (cloud infrastructure outages occasionally occur and are not a device fault).
Dryer works only in manual mode, not in automatic
This is a relatively common situation: the customer sets up a weekly program, but the dryer heats continuously or does not turn on at the programmed time. Most common cause: the clock is not set correctly (wrong time, wrong day of the week). DEVIrail models with a digital timer usually display the current time and day on the screen – verify that it matches reality. Second cause: the program was saved but not activated. Each model has a different procedure for activating the program (sometimes a special "Program" button must be pressed or the setting must be confirmed).
Mechanical faults of DEVIrail – cracking, vibrations, play in the structure
Along with electrical faults, customers also report mechanical problems that do not affect functionality but are unpleasant.
Cracking and clicking during heating and cooling
This is not a fault – it is a physically necessary phenomenon. Metal pipes expand when heated and contract when cooled. During each temperature cycle, they produce cracking or clicking sounds, especially at points where the pipes touch the consoles or where metal passes through a seal. These sounds are normal and do not indicate any fault. If the sounds are too loud, you can insert a thin pad made of a softer material (e.g., a silicone pad) between the console and the pipe, but this is almost never necessary for DEVIrail – the models are designed to minimize these sounds.
Play in the consoles – dryer moves when touched
If the dryer is not firmly attached to the wall (loose screws, unsuitable anchors for the type of wall), it may sway when touched. Check all mounting points and make sure the screws are tightened. For tiling, it is crucial to choose anchors properly dimensioned for ceramic + masonry – the standard is 6 or 8 mm plastic anchors with a minimum length of 50 mm to anchor behind the tiling. Surface problems – corrosion, color change, exposed metal
DEVIrail electric dryers are available in white or chrome finish. Both surfaces are designed for bathroom environments, but improper maintenance can cause degradation.
Chrome surface – limescale and corrosion
DEVIrail S Chrome and DEVIrail U Chrome have a surface made of polished stainless steel or chrome-plated pipes. The chrome surface is prone to limescale deposits (CaCO₃), which form when water or steam is splashed or condenses. Limescale appears as a white or gray coating that is difficult to wipe off. In addition to an aesthetic problem, prolonged neglect can lead to microporous corrosion under the coating.
Never use for cleaning the chrome surface: abrasive cleaning agents, rough sponges, wire brushes, or strong acidic cleaning agents (e.g., bathroom cleaners with strong acid) – these can permanently damage the chrome layer. White surface – yellowing, peeling paint
DEVIrail S White, DEVIrail U White and DEVIrail W White have a powder or wet epoxy or polyester surface treatment. This surface is more resistant to moisture than chrome, but it can yellow due to prolonged exposure to UV radiation (if the dryer is near a window) or due to excessive heating. Peeling of the surface treatment occurs due to mechanical damage (scratches from hard objects) or improper chemical cleaning (aggressive solvents).
Warranty, warranty conditions and service repairs for DEVIrail
DEVI provides standard warranty period for its products according to EU regulations – 24 months for consumers. Warranty repair does not apply to faults caused by: incorrect installation (e.g. missing grounding), mechanical damage (impacts, falling), incorrect cleaning (aggressive chemicals), interference by unauthorized persons in the electrical device or normal wear and tear (e.g. degradation of surface treatment due to inappropriate cleaning).
Important: any interference in the electrical device (including cable, thermostat or heating element replacement) must be carried out by a person with appropriate electrical education or by an authorized service technician. A customer who attempts to repair an electrical device without authorization loses the warranty claim and takes responsibility for any possible damage.
When claiming warranty, it is necessary to present a proof of purchase (invoice or cash register receipt) and ideally also the original packaging. The service technician must have access to the device at the installation site or the device must be disassembled (in this case, disassembly and reassembly is not charged, if the fault falls under warranty repair).
Preventive maintenance – how to prevent faults
From practice we know that most DEVIrail faults are either the result of incorrect installation (which manifests immediately or within a few weeks) or long-term neglect of maintenance (which manifests after years of operation). A few preventive measures that significantly extend the lifespan of the towel dryer:
- Once a month visually inspect the power cable – look for mechanical damage, cuts, pronounced bends.
- Once a month wipe the surface of the dryer with a damp cloth (microfiber) – this prevents the accumulation of limescale and dust.
- Once every six months check the tightness of all screws on the consoles – vibrations can cause gradual loosening.
- After each power outage check and reset the timer if necessary.
- Never leave wet and heavy items hanging on the dryer unattended for longer than 2 hours – especially if the dryer does not have an automatic shut-off.
- Never leave the dryer in operation without anyone present in the household if it is set to maximum temperature and covered with material.
Practical examples from practice – scenarios we encounter
Scenario 1: A customer installed DEVIrail U White in a new apartment, it worked without problems for the first week. After the first storm, it stopped working. Cause: the FI circuit breaker tripped due to a voltage surge. Solution: reset the FI, then connect the dryer via surge protection on the distribution board.
Scenario 2: A customer called saying that her dryer "goes cold" – it is warm in the morning, but cold during the day. Cause: the time on the timer was shifted by 12 hours (set to AM instead of PM). After a power outage, the clock reset and the customer set the time, but mixed up AM/PM. Solution: reset the clock.
Scenario 3: A customer reported that after three years of operation, DEVIrail W White started to emit an unpleasant odor when heating. Cause: after a small bathroom renovation, a liquid (probably sealant or chemical cleaner) got on the pipes, which evaporated when heated. Solution: thorough surface cleaning, bathroom ventilation. No service repair was needed.
Scenario 4: New installation of DEVIrail S Chrome, the dryer did not work right after the first switch-on. The FI circuit breaker tripped immediately. Cause: the socket in the bathroom was not grounded (an apartment from the 80s, original installation without a protective conductor). The dryer with a grounded plug detected a current difference when connected to an ungrounded socket and tripped. Solution: the electrical installation in the bathroom had to be upgraded to standard with a protective conductor. Only after this change was the dryer functional.
Scenario 5: A customer felt that the dryer was "heating weakly". Measurement showed that the pipe surface temperature was 42 °C – which is a normal operating temperature at a thermostat setting of 45 °C and room temperature of 22 °C. The customer expected the dryer to be as hot as a central heating radiator. Explanation: electric towel dryers are designed for safe touch, not for intensive space heating. The radiator, not the dryer, is used to heat the bathroom.
When to buy a new dryer instead of repairing an old one
Sometimes a customer has an older DEVIrail (7 – 10 or more years) and faces the decision of whether to invest in a repair or in a new unit. From an economic point of view, a simple rule applies: if the repair exceeds 40 – 50 % of the price of a new device of the same category, it is more cost-effective to buy a new one. In addition, a new dryer is more energy efficient (modern thermostats with weekly programming save up to 30 – 40 % energy compared to older models with manual knobs).

Most frequently asked questions (FAQ)
My DEVIrail turns on after replacing the fuse in the distribution board, but after a while it trips again. What does it mean?
If the circuit breaker trips repeatedly, it means there is a permanent cause of short circuit or overload in the circuit. The cause may be: damaged power cable of the dryer, short circuit inside the device (heating element), or too weak a circuit breaker (e.g. 6 A instead of recommended 10 A for power 1 000 – 1 500 W). Call an electrician – this is not a situation where you should continue trying to turn it on.
DEVIrail heats only on one part of the ladder. Is it a fault?
Yes, this is a real fault. In most DEVIrail models, the heating element is located in one or two pipes, while the others are connected and heated by heat conduction. If it heats only partially, it may be a broken internal connection (welded joint), or a broken heating cable in a specific part. A service issue.
The dryer makes crackling sounds. Should I call service?
No, if the sounds crackle during heating and cooling (e.g. in the morning after turning on and in the evening after turning off). It is normal thermal expansion and contraction of metal pipes. If the sounds are constant, tinkling or humming during the entire operation period, it may be an electrical noise (e.g. due to a faulty transformer in the controlled plug or electromagnetic interference) – in this case, contact service.
The thermostat of DEVIrail shows the correct temperature on the display, but the dryer does not heat. Is the display broken?
Not necessarily. If the display shows, for example, 22 °C (current room temperature) and the set temperature is 20 °C, the dryer will not turn on – because the room temperature is higher than the desired one. Increase the set temperature by at least 3 – 5 °C above the current room temperature. If the dryer still does not start heating, there may be a problem with the thermostat or with the connection between the thermostat and the heating element.
DEVIrail works, but the bathroom does not heat up. Did I buy a too weak model?
Electric towel dryers are primarily designed for drying towels and keeping the space slightly warm – not for full heating of the bathroom. For a bathroom with an area of 6 m² and ceiling height of 2.5 m with standard insulation, a heating power of about 500 – 700 W is needed. The power of DEVIrail ranges from 200 to 800 W depending on the model and size – so in a smaller bathroom it may be sufficient as the only heat source. After bathroom renovation (new tiling), the dryer stopped working. What happened?
During tiling, several issues could have occurred: mechanical damage to the supply cable running through the wall or behind the tiling, damage to the socket (moisture entering the electrical box), or the cable being pushed in when mounting the consoles onto the new wall. If the socket was temporarily removed and reinstalled during the renovation, check whether it is correctly connected and grounded. If the problem persists, an inspection by an electrician is required.
