Detailed information

Product detailed description

Vaillant thermal insulation for plate heat exchanger PHE C 240-40

This thermal insulation is an original Vaillant accessory designed exclusively for the plate heat exchanger PHE C 240-40 (exchanger order code 0020137070). The insulating cover is shaped precisely to match the dimensions of the exchanger body (421 × 532 × 636 mm (A × B × C, including bracket)) including cutouts for the side connections of both the primary and secondary circuits, and serves three key functions: safety (prevents accidental contact of the operator with the hot surface of the exchanger), energy-saving (reduces heat losses by radiation and convection into the surrounding boiler room), and anti-condensation (limits the formation of condensate on the exchanger surface during operation with lower secondary medium temperatures, e.g. when connected to a heat pump circuit).

According to the official Vaillant installation manual for the PHE S/PHE C series, there is an explicit safety warning: „Wärmetauscher kann im Betrieb sehr heiß werden – Verbrennungsgefahr“ (the exchanger can become very hot during operation – risk of burns). This insulation is precisely the recommended solution for eliminating this risk in real boiler room operation, without the need for additional protective measures or restricting access to the area.

Design of the insulating cover

The cover is made of closed-cell thermal insulation foam with a black surface, resistant to typical boiler room operating temperatures. The design is a detachable, shape-fitted enclosure that follows the angular body of the PHE C 240-40 exchanger and leaves free access to the side connections of both the primary and secondary circuits, as well as to any venting and drain fittings, if included in the assembly. Thanks to its split design, the cover can also be fitted subsequently onto an already assembled and connected exchanger, without the need to dismantle the piping.

Installing the insulating cover

  1. Before fitting the insulation, it is recommended to complete the assembly and leak testing of all exchanger connections.
  2. The cover is fitted onto the exchanger body in its individual sections so that the cutouts precisely align with the side connections of the primary and secondary circuits.
  3. The cover sections are joined together (depending on the design, using clips, hook-and-loop fastener, or overlap with a fastener) so that no gaps remain through which heat could escape or contact with the hot surface underneath could occur.
  4. Before putting the system into operation, it is recommended to visually check that the cover does not obstruct the space needed for operating valves, venting, or any future measurement work.

Servicing, cleaning and maintenance

If signs of limescale or dirt build-up appear (typical with hard or contaminated water), the exchanger is cleaned as follows: the system is taken out of operation, the exchanger is drained and removed. For cleaning, only agents suitable for stainless steel and copper should be used – unsuitable cleaning agents may irreversibly damage the exchanger. Flushing with the cleaning solution is carried out against the normal flow direction, after which the exchanger is rinsed with clean water, reassembled, and before restarting it is recommended to check the water hardness. In cases of high water hardness, treatment of the heating water is recommended according to the documentation of the other system components – atria.sk offers, in the chemical and physical water treatment category, e.g. corrosion inhibitors and cleaning agents of the SENTINEL and ULTIMA ranges, which extend the service life of the exchanger and the entire boiler room.

In case of temporary shutdown (repair, servicing, longer outage), it is recommended to completely drain and clean the exchanger to prevent damage from frost, aggressive media, or biological fouling. When finally taken out of operation, the primary circuit is closed first, then the secondary circuit, followed by draining and removal.

Compatibility and related accessories

The PHE C 240-40 exchanger belongs to the PHE C series, which is always installed together with the supplied floor bracket with height-adjustable feet. When completing the assembly, we recommend also adding the following original accessories from the same category on atria.sk:

  • DN65 connecting pipe (code 0020107886) – a flanged connecting part for PHE C models up to 360 kW, into which, besides the main supply/return, additional fittings can also be connected (venting, drainage, thermometer, pressure gauge).
  • Connecting pipe insulation (code 0020248930) – a thermal cover for the above connecting part, for complete insulation of the whole assembly including the pipe connections, not just the exchanger body itself.

Typical application scenario

A typical example of use is an administrative building or a larger residential complex with a cascade of three to four condensing boilers with a total output close to 240 kW. The boiler room in such a building is usually already subject to regular professional inspections (gas equipment inspections, pressure tests), during which the technician needs quick and safe access to the exchanger without the risk of burns from hot surfaces - which is exactly why it is worth investing in an original, precisely shaped cover instead of improvised wrapping with mineral wool.

Why an improvised solution is not a good choice

In practice, we occasionally come across a makeshift solution where the installation company simply wraps the hot exchanger in mineral wool and secures it with tape or wire. This solution is problematic for several reasons: mineral wool absorbs moisture from the surroundings and loses its insulating properties, it does not precisely match the shape of the exchanger (creating gaps with heat loss and risk of contact), and during servicing it usually has to be entirely discarded and replaced with new material. The original, shape-fitted Vaillant cover, on the other hand, retains its shape and insulating properties over the long term, can be repeatedly removed and refitted without loss of function, and its appearance matches the professional level of the rest of the boiler room equipment.

Energy and operational benefits of the insulation

An uninsulated metal surface of a large plate heat exchanger represents a constant source of heat losses by radiation and convection into the surrounding plant room during operation. In models with higher output (and thus also a larger surface area of the body, as is the case with the PHE C 240-40 model), this effect is more pronounced than in small domestic units. Covering the body with suitable thermal insulation is a simple and low-cost measure that can noticeably reduce these losses without interfering with the functional part of the system – similarly to how distribution pipes or fittings are commonly insulated in the same boiler room. Together with other accessories (e.g. connecting pipe insulation), this creates a comprehensively insulated assembly that reduces the overall heat losses of the plant room and contributes to a more stable and predictable operating temperature in that space.

Why choose original Vaillant insulation for the PHE C 240-40

  • Precise shape match with the PHE C 240-40 exchanger – no additional adjustments or trimming to fit, unlike universal insulations from the general market.
  • Increased operational safety in accordance with the manufacturer's explicit recommendation in the installation manual.
  • Reduced heat losses and thus a slight improvement in the actual efficiency of boiler room operation.
  • Detachable design does not hinder routine servicing or occasional inspection of the exchanger.
  • Long-term stability of shape and function compared to improvised solutions using mineral wool or other materials.
  • The PHE C 240-40 model is typically used in small and medium-sized commercial buildings and apartment buildings with their own boiler room, where a cascade of condensing boilers reaches an output of up to 240 kW.

When ordering, we always recommend verifying that the exchanger order code 0020137070 matches the model listed on this page (PHE C 240-40), since the individual covers of the PHE C series are not interchangeable with each other and differ not only in outer dimensions but also in the exact placement of cutouts for side connections and the optional floor bracket. If in doubt about selecting the correct part, we recommend contacting atria.sk customer support or the designer of the given heating system directly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this insulation intended exclusively for the PHE C 240-40 model?

Yes. The insulating cover is shaped precisely to the dimensions and shape of the PHE C 240-40 exchanger body (421 × 532 × 636 mm (A × B × C, including bracket)), including cutouts for connections, and is therefore not interchangeable with the insulation of another model in the PHE series.

Why is thermal insulation of the exchanger important if it is made of stainless steel?

The Vaillant installation manual explicitly warns that the exchanger surface can become very hot during operation and there is a risk of burns from direct contact. The insulating cover covers this surface, protects the boiler room operator, and at the same time reduces heat losses to the surroundings, thereby improving the efficiency of the entire system.

Can the insulation be easily removed when servicing the exchanger?

Yes, the cover is designed to be detachable (in two or more parts), so it can be unclipped without tools before cleaning or servicing the exchanger according to the manufacturer's instructions, and refitted once the work is completed.

What material is the cover made of?

The insulating covers for the Vaillant PHE series are made of closed-cell foam with high thermal resistance, with the outer side finished with a durable surface suitable for the typical environment of a technical room/boiler room.

What types of installations is the PHE C 240-40 model best suited for?

The PHE C 240-40 model is typically used in small and medium-sized commercial buildings and apartment buildings with their own boiler room, where a cascade of condensing boilers reaches an output of up to 240 kW.

Does the insulation affect the warranty on the exchanger itself?

No, the insulating cover is a separate accessory and its use or non-use does not affect the 2-year warranty provided on the plate heat exchanger itself. However, its use is recommended for the safety and energy reasons described above.

What happens if the insulation is not used at all?

The exchanger will continue to perform its function, but the surface of the body will remain accessible to direct contact during operation and will radiate heat into the surrounding plant room without any barrier. This increases the risk of burns to the operator and slightly reduces the energy efficiency of operation compared to the insulated state.

Does the temperature in the plant room affect the need for insulation?

Yes. In unheated or poorly ventilated plant rooms, an uninsulated exchanger can significantly raise the room temperature, which is uncomfortable for the operator and can also negatively affect other temperature-sensitive equipment (controllers, measuring instruments) located in the same room. Insulation significantly limits this effect.

Can the insulation be repainted or otherwise modified to match the appearance of the boiler room?

The manufacturer standardly supplies the cover in a dark (black) finish, designed to be neutral and suitable for a typical technical room environment. Additional surface treatments have not been tested by the manufacturer, and we recommend against them so as not to alter the thermal insulation or fire-safety properties of the material.
