Detailed information

Product detailed description

Vaillant thermal insulation for the PHE C 600-120 plate heat exchanger

This thermal insulation is an original Vaillant accessory intended exclusively for the PHE C 600-120 plate heat exchanger (exchanger order code 0020137073). The insulating cover is shaped precisely to the dimensions of the exchanger body (421 × 532 × 636 mm, connection height K 362 mm) including cut-outs for the side connections of both the primary and secondary circuits, and fulfils three key functions: safety (prevents accidental contact of staff with the hot surface of the exchanger), energy-saving (reduces heat losses by radiation and convection into the surrounding plant room), and anti-condensation (limits the formation of condensate on the surface of the exchanger during operation with lower temperatures of the secondary medium, e.g. when connected to a heat pump circuit).

According to the official Vaillant installation manual for the PHE S/PHE C series, there is an explicit safety warning: „Wärmetauscher kann im Betrieb sehr heiß werden – Verbrennungsgefahr“ (the exchanger may become very hot during operation – risk of burns). This insulation is precisely the recommended solution for eliminating this risk in real boiler room operation without the need for additional protective measures or restricted access to the area.

Design of the insulating cover

The cover is made of closed-cell thermal insulation foam with a black surface, resistant to the usual temperatures encountered in boiler room operation. The design is a demountable, shape-matched enclosure that follows the angular body of the PHE C 600-120 exchanger while leaving free access to the side connections of the primary and secondary circuits, as well as to the venting and drain valves, if included in the assembly. Thanks to its sectional design, the cover can also be fitted retroactively onto an already installed and connected exchanger, without the need to dismantle any piping.

Installing the insulating cover

  1. Before fitting the insulation, it is recommended to complete the installation and leak-test all exchanger connections.
  2. The cover is fitted onto the exchanger body in its individual sections so that the cut-outs align precisely with the side connections of the primary and secondary circuits.
  3. The cover sections are joined together (depending on the version, using clips, hook-and-loop fastener, or an overlap with a locking mechanism) so that no gaps are left through which heat could escape or contact with the hot surface underneath the cover could occur.
  4. Before commissioning the system, it is recommended to visually check that the cover does not obstruct the space needed for operating the shut-off valves, venting, or any future measurement interventions.

Servicing, cleaning and maintenance

If signs of limescale or dirt build-up appear (typical with hard or contaminated water), the exchanger should be cleaned as follows: shut down the system, drain and remove the exchanger. For cleaning, use only agents suitable for stainless steel and copper – unsuitable cleaning agents can permanently damage the exchanger. Flushing with the cleaning solution is done against the normal flow direction, then the exchanger is rinsed with clean water, reinstalled, and it is recommended to check the water hardness before restarting. In case of high water hardness, treatment of the heating water is recommended according to the documentation for the other system components – atria.sk offers, in the category chemical and physical water treatment, corrosion inhibitors and cleaning agents from the SENTINEL and ULTIMA ranges for this purpose, which extend the service life of the exchanger and of the whole boiler room.

In case of temporary shutdown (repair, servicing, extended downtime), it is recommended to fully drain and clean the exchanger to prevent damage from frost, aggressive media, or biological fouling. When permanently decommissioning the unit, first close the primary circuit, then the secondary circuit, followed by draining and disassembly.

Compatibility and related accessories

The PHE C 600-120 exchanger belongs to the PHE C series, which is always installed together with the supplied floor bracket with height-adjustable feet. When completing the assembly, we also recommend adding the following original accessories from the same category on atria.sk:

  • Connecting pipe DN100 (code 0020107887) – a flanged connecting part for PHE C models above 360 kW, into which, in addition to the main supply/return, additional fittings (venting, drain, thermometer, pressure gauge) can also be connected.
  • Insulation of the connecting pipe (code 0020248930) – a thermal cover for the above connecting part, for complete insulation of the entire assembly, including the pipe connections, not just the exchanger body itself.

Typical application scenario

A hospital, a large shopping centre, or an industrial hall with a cascade reaching an output of around 600 kW are facilities where a failure or reduced functionality of the boiler room has a direct impact on dozens or hundreds of people. In such environments, strict attention is paid to compliance with all the manufacturer's safety recommendations, including covering the hot surfaces of the exchangers, since the plant room may be part of regular inspection rounds by both trained technical staff and untrained personnel.

Why an improvised solution is not a good choice

In practice, we sometimes encounter a makeshift solution where the installation company simply wraps the hot exchanger with mineral wool and secures it with tape or wire. This solution is problematic for several reasons: mineral wool absorbs moisture from the surroundings and loses its insulating properties, it does not precisely follow the shape of the exchanger (creating gaps with heat loss and the risk of contact), and during servicing it usually has to be entirely discarded and replaced with new material. In contrast, the original, shape-matched Vaillant cover retains its shape and insulating properties over the long term, can be repeatedly removed and refitted without any loss of functionality, and its appearance matches the professional level of the rest of the boiler room equipment.

Energy and operational benefits of the insulation

An uninsulated metal surface of a large plate heat exchanger represents a constant source of heat loss by radiation and convection into the surrounding plant room during operation. In models with higher output (and therefore also a larger surface area of the body, as is the case with the PHE C 600-120 model), this effect is more pronounced than in small domestic units. Covering the body with suitable thermal insulation is one of the simple and low-cost measures that can noticeably reduce these losses without interfering with the functional part of the system – similar to how distribution pipes and valves are commonly insulated in the same boiler room. Together with other accessories (e.g. insulation of the connecting pipe), this creates a comprehensively insulated assembly that reduces the overall heat losses of the plant room and contributes to a more stable and predictable operating temperature in that space.

Why choose original Vaillant insulation for the PHE C 600-120

  • Precise shape match with the PHE C 600-120 exchanger – no additional adjustments or custom cutting required, unlike universal insulation available on the general market.
  • Increased operational safety in accordance with the manufacturer's explicit recommendation in the installation manual.
  • Reduced heat losses and thereby also a slight improvement in the real efficiency of boiler room operation.
  • Demountable design does not hinder routine servicing or occasional inspection of the exchanger.
  • Long-term stability of shape and function compared with improvised solutions made of mineral wool or other materials.
  • The PHE C 600-120 model is used in large institutional buildings – hospitals, shopping centres, and industrial halls – with a boiler room output of up to 600 kW.

When ordering, we always recommend checking that the exchanger order code 0020137073 matches the model stated on this page (PHE C 600-120), since the individual covers in the PHE C series are not interchangeable with each other and differ not only in external dimensions but also in the exact placement of the cut-outs for the side connections and any floor bracket. If you are unsure about selecting the correct part, we recommend contacting the atria.sk customer support team or the designer of the given heating system directly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this insulation intended exclusively for the PHE C 600-120 model?

Yes. The insulating cover is shaped precisely to the dimensions and shape of the PHE C 600-120 exchanger body (421 × 532 × 636 mm, connection height K 362 mm) including the connection cut-outs, so it is not interchangeable with the insulation for another model in the PHE series.

Why is thermal insulation of the exchanger important when it is made of stainless steel?

The Vaillant installation manual explicitly warns that the surface of the exchanger can become very hot during operation and there is a risk of burns from direct contact. The insulating cover covers this surface, protects boiler room staff, and also reduces heat losses to the surroundings, thereby improving the efficiency of the entire system.

Can the insulation be easily removed when servicing the exchanger?

Yes, the cover is designed to be demountable (in two or more sections), so it can be unfastened without tools before cleaning or servicing the exchanger according to the manufacturer's instructions, and refitted once the work is finished.

What material is used to make the cover?

The insulating covers for the Vaillant PHE series are made of closed-cell foam with high thermal resistance, with a durable outer surface suitable for the typical environment of a technical room/boiler room.

What types of facilities is the PHE C 600-120 model best suited for?

The PHE C 600-120 model is used in large institutional buildings – hospitals, shopping centres, and industrial halls – with a boiler room output of up to 600 kW.

Does the insulation affect the warranty on the exchanger itself?

No, the insulating cover is a separate accessory and its use or non-use does not affect the 2-year warranty provided on the plate heat exchanger itself. However, its use is recommended for the safety and energy reasons described above.

What happens if the insulation is not used at all?

The exchanger will continue to function, but the surface of the body will be exposed to direct contact during operation and will radiate heat into the surroundings of the plant room without any barrier. This increases the risk of burns to staff and slightly reduces the energy efficiency of operation compared with an insulated state.

Does the temperature in the plant room affect the need for insulation?

Yes. In unheated or poorly ventilated plant rooms, an uninsulated exchanger can significantly raise the room temperature, which is unpleasant for staff and may also adversely affect other temperature-sensitive equipment (controllers, measuring instruments) located in the same room. Insulation significantly limits this effect.

Can the insulation be painted or otherwise modified to match the appearance of the boiler room?

The manufacturer supplies the cover as standard in a dark (black) finish, designed to be neutral and suitable for a typical technical room environment. Additional surface treatments have not been tested by the manufacturer, and we recommend against making them so as not to alter the thermal insulation or fire-resistance properties of the material.
