Detailed information

Product detailed description

Vaillant uniSTOR exclusive VIH R 200 A – indirect-fired domestic hot water storage tank with a capacity of 200 litres

For households that need a higher level of comfort in domestic hot water preparation than the smaller 150-litre model can provide, Vaillant also offers a larger-capacity version within its exclusive design line – the VIH R 200 A. This is a floor-standing, stationary storage tank with a capacity of 200 litres, working on the principle of indirect heating – domestic hot water is heated via a built-in heat exchanger (heating coil) connected to the heating water circuit of a wall-mounted or stationary Vaillant gas boiler. The glossy white outer casing is designed to visually complement the modern Vaillant exclusiv boiler line (ecoTEC exclusive, turboTEC exclusiv), so the storage tank doesn't look like an added-on appliance, but rather like part of a single well-thought-out heating solution.

The 200-litre capacity is intended primarily for larger households with five or more members, or for family houses with two bathrooms, where hot water is more frequently drawn simultaneously at multiple points at once (for example, showering in one bathroom while washing dishes in the kitchen at the same time). Thanks to the larger heat exchange area of the internal heat exchanger, the model also handles more significant peak draw-offs without a substantial drop in water temperature during longer consecutive showers by several people.

Internal equipment and construction

Just like its smaller 150-litre sibling, the VIH R 200 A uses an enamelled steel tank that is resistant to corrosion caused by constant contact with water. Additional anti-corrosion protection is provided by a built-in magnesium sacrificial anode – this is gradually consumed during operation through an electrochemical process that protects the steel tank wall itself, which is why regular inspection (usually once a year) and replacement when significantly worn is necessary. Inside the tank is a heating coil with a heat exchange area of approx. 1.18 m², roughly a third larger than in the 150-litre model, which is directly reflected in the higher continuous output (837 l/h compared to 640 l/h) and the higher performance factor NL (3.5 compared to 2.0) – i.e. the ability to cover simultaneous draw-off at multiple points at once.

The casing's thermal insulation is achieved through a combination of hardened PU foam and, in some cases, vacuum insulation panels, which are among the most effective insulation materials available on the market – thanks to this, standby heat loss remains low despite the larger volume of water in the tank.

Installation

Installation proceeds the same way as with other models of the uniSTOR VIH R line – the tank is placed on a level, sufficiently load-bearing floor near the heat source (boiler), connected to the heating water circuit via R1" fittings, and to the cold and hot water supply lines via R¾" connections. Given the higher weight of the filled tank (200 litres of water alone weighs 200 kg, so together with the weight of the tank itself the resulting load weight exceeds 250 kg), sufficient floor load capacity must be taken into account, especially when installing in an attic or on a wooden floor support structure. We also recommend not forgetting a safety valve matching the maximum operating pressure and routing its discharge to a safe location.

Since the model has a separate connection for a circulation pipe (R¾"), it is worth using it especially in larger installations with two bathrooms or longer pipe runs – circulation ensures that hot water is available almost instantly whenever a tap is opened, without unnecessarily draining cooled water from the pipes.

Who the 200 l model is suitable for

This capacity version is intended primarily for:

  • family houses with 5 or more residents,
  • households with two bathrooms or a separate shower cubicle and bathtub,
  • households with regular simultaneous draw-off (e.g. morning rush before school/work),
  • smaller businesses with higher hot water demand (e.g. small accommodation facilities, doctor's offices).

If your household is smaller or you have only one bathroom draw-off point, it may be more economical and space-efficient to choose the smaller 150-litre model from the same exclusive design line. On the other hand, if you are planning a future extension, attic apartments for rent, or expect your family to grow, investing in a larger capacity now can save costs associated with later replacing an undersized tank.

Installation in a boiler room with limited space

Despite its larger capacity, the 200 l model retains the same cylindrical shape and an almost identical footprint as the 150 l model (the difference is mainly in the tank's height), so when planning space in the boiler room or utility room, there is no need to account for a significantly larger floor area – only for a higher ceiling or sufficient clear room height. This is particularly advantageous during renovations, where the tank is placed into an already existing, dimensionally limited niche or recess.

Compatibility and independence from electricity

The VIH R 200 A storage tank is compatible with a wide range of wall-mounted and stationary Vaillant boilers, and since the water heating itself is provided exclusively by the heating water circuit (with no need for the tank's own electrical connection), it remains functional even during a power outage – the only requirement is a functioning heat source. This makes the combination a reliable solution even for locations with less stable electricity supply.

Energy efficiency

Despite the larger capacity, standby heat loss remains at a reasonable level of around 1.6 kWh per 24 hours thanks to quality insulation. In practice, this means the tank does not consume a significant amount of energy to maintain temperature even during longer periods without draw-off (for example, during a holiday). We recommend supplementing this with weather-compensated boiler control with the option of time-programming hot water preparation, which can limit reheating during times when the family is not home, thereby reducing annual operating costs without reducing comfort.

Maintenance

Recommended regular maintenance includes an annual inspection of the magnesium anode, checking the functionality of the safety valve, occasional desludging of the tank bottom, and in areas with harder water, checking for limescale buildup around the cold water inlet. The glossy outer casing only needs to be cleaned with a soft, damp cloth – avoid abrasive and solvent-based cleaning agents, which could damage the lacquered surface characteristic of the exclusive line.

Why choose this model

The VIH R 200 A offers the highest comfort among the smaller (non-cylindrical, non-large-volume) tanks of the uniSTOR VIH R line, suitable for more demanding households that also want a tank design-matched to modern Vaillant boilers. The combination of high continuous output, a robust enamelled construction with a long-standing tradition, and an attractive appearance makes it a well-considered investment in hot water comfort for years to come.

Operational safety

As with any pressurised storage tank, a functioning safety valve set to the maximum operating pressure of 1.0 MPa (10 bar) is an essential part of the installation, releasing excess pressure from the tank during water heating (and its thermal expansion). The discharge from the safety valve should be routed to a safe location, for example to a floor drain. For hygiene reasons, we recommend setting the heating temperature on the boiler thermostat to 55–60 °C (sufficient temperature to eliminate the risk of Legionella bacteria while maintaining reasonable energy efficiency), and fitting a thermostatic mixing valve at the hot water outlet, which reduces the water temperature to a safe level directly at the draw-off point and protects against scalding, especially if there are small children or elderly people in the household.

Typical usage scenarios

As with all indirect-fired storage tanks, the real hot water comfort depends not only on the tank's capacity but also on the output of the connected boiler – if the boiler is undersized, even a large tank cannot ensure fast repeated reheating. We therefore recommend consulting a designer or a Vaillant service technician when choosing, who will suggest the right combination of boiler output and tank capacity according to the household's actual consumption.

In practice, the VIH R 200 A is most often used in renovations of older family houses, where an older gas boiler is being replaced with a modern condensing Vaillant unit and the hot water storage tank is being addressed at the same time – either because the original one was reaching the end of its service life, or because the owners want to increase comfort compared to an older, smaller water heater. It is also used in new-build houses with two bathrooms, where the investor already plans for a higher standard of hot water comfort from the start. Due to the exclusive design, this model is often also chosen in cases where the utility room or boiler room is partially visible (for example, an open hallway, a utility room with glass doors), and the owner wants the equipment to look aesthetically unified.

Scope of delivery

The package includes the enamelled tank itself with a built-in heating coil, magnesium anode, thermal insulation and outer casing, as well as an immersion sleeve for a thermometer or temperature sensor and connection fittings with marked thread dimensions. The safety valve, any connecting sets specific to a particular boiler model, the thermostatic mixing valve, and the circulation pump (if circulation is used) are ordered separately as additional accessories according to the specific configuration of the given installation.

Exclusive vs. standard uniSTOR design

The structural basis of the tank – enamelled steel body, magnesium anode, heating coil with the same heat exchange area and output parameters – is identical to the regular (non-exclusive) version of the uniSTOR VIH R 200 line. The difference lies mainly in the exterior appearance: the exclusive version has a glossy white lacquered casing instead of a matte one, which visually unifies it with the Vaillant exclusiv boiler design line (ecoTEC exclusive, turboTEC exclusiv). In terms of performance, reliability and service life, there is therefore no difference between the two versions – the choice is purely aesthetic and depends on whether the customer is combining the tank with a boiler from the exclusiv line, or whether matching appearance doesn't matter to them.

Environmental aspect

Since the tank uses heat from an already operating heating system to heat domestic hot water (the boiler produces heat primarily for space heating and secondarily also for DHW preparation), there is no additional electricity consumption for direct heating during its operation, as is the case with electric water heaters. Combined with a Vaillant condensing boiler with high seasonal efficiency, a household can achieve a significantly lower carbon footprint when preparing hot water compared to conventional electric heating, especially outside the heating season, when the boiler operates efficiently even at lower output.

Frequently asked questions

Can the tank handle two people showering at the same time?

Yes, with a performance factor NL of around 3.5, the 200 l model is designed precisely for comfortable coverage of simultaneous draw-off at two points, for example two showers or a shower and a bathtub/sink at the same time.

What is the difference compared to the 150-litre model of the same line?

The 200 l version has a larger heat exchanger area (1.18 m² compared to 0.9 m²), thus achieving higher continuous and peak output and better handling of simultaneous draw-off at multiple points, at the cost of larger dimensions and a higher weight of the filled tank.

Does the tank need its own electrical connection?

No, heating takes place purely via the heating water circuit connected to the boiler; the tank itself does not need electricity to function.

Is it necessary to consider floor load capacity during installation?

When filled, the tank together with the water weighs more than 250 kg, so when installing on a wooden or lightweight floor structure, it is advisable to verify sufficient load capacity, or alternatively place the tank on a masonry floor in a basement or utility room.

Can hot water circulation be connected to the tank?

Yes, the tank has its own connection for a circulation pipe R¾", which is worth using especially with pipe runs having a longer route to draw-off points.

What is the service life of the tank with proper maintenance?

With regular inspection and replacement of the magnesium anode and adherence to the recommended operating pressure and temperature, the enamelled steel tank can reliably serve for 15 years or more, which is a common standard for quality tanks of this construction.
