Detailed information

Product detailed description

ATTACK PV150 — additional flue gas exhaust for DP, DPX, SLX 15–45 kW boilers

The additional flue gas exhaust PV150 is an active fan-based system that is installed in the flue gas path between a solid fuel boiler (DP, DPX, SLX series with an output of 15–45 kW) and the chimney. Its purpose is to supplement or fully take over the function of natural chimney draught in cases where the actual conditions of a specific building do not provide sufficient natural draught required for the safe and efficient operation of a gasification boiler.

Wood gasification boilers are more sensitive to sufficient chimney draught than classic boilers with natural draught, because the process of controlled wood gasification and subsequent gas combustion requires stable and predictable flue gas removal. If the chimney cannot reliably ensure this draught, it manifests as reduced boiler output, worse combustion, smoke leaking out when adding fuel, or repeated boiler shutdowns caused by safety features.

Key features

  • An active fan located directly in the flue gas path, which creates controlled negative pressure and stabilizes flue gas removal regardless of current weather conditions.
  • Compensates for insufficient natural draught caused by a low, short, or improperly sized chimney.
  • Solves draught problems in multi-storey buildings, where the flue gas path from the boiler to the chimney is longer and has more changes of direction.
  • Improves combustion stability and boiler output even in unfavorable weather (low air pressure, strong wind, temperature inversions), when the chimney's natural draught fluctuates.
  • Reduces the risk of smoke leaking into the boiler room when adding fuel, caused by a momentary negative pressure fluctuation in the chimney.
  • Simple electrical installation with a connection to the boiler's control unit, the fan runs synchronously with the burner's operation.
  • Robust construction resistant to high temperatures and the aggressive environment of flue gases from wood combustion.
  • Suitable as a supplementary solution also when renovating an older house with an old, undersized chimney, without the need for a costly replacement of the entire chimney structure.

When an additional flue gas exhaust is really needed

Not every chimney, even if it formally complies with the diameter and height according to the original design, can in practice ensure sufficient draught for a modern wood gasification boiler. Typical situations where it is recommended to supplement natural draught with the active PV150 fan include: an old, low chimney originally built for a different (less demanding) type of appliance; a multi-storey building, where the flue gas path from the boiler in the basement or on the ground floor to the chimney flue on the roof covers a long distance with multiple bends and changes of direction; a chimney located in close proximity to taller neighboring buildings or trees that disrupt the natural air flow around the chimney opening; or areas with frequent unfavorable weather conditions (low atmospheric pressure, strong gusty wind, temperature inversions in the winter months), in which the natural draught of the chimney fluctuates and becomes unreliable.

The consequence of insufficient chimney draught with a gasification boiler is not only lower output and worse combustion efficiency — it is a real operational problem that manifests as smoke leaking into the boiler room when opening the hopper during fuel loading, repeated flame extinguishing when the draught drops, increased tar and soot formation due to incomplete combustion, and in extreme cases even a safety risk associated with flue gas leaking into the living space.

The PV150 fan solves this problem in an active, controlled way — instead of relying solely on the physical chimney effect (the difference in temperature and air density inside and outside the chimney), the fan located directly in the flue gas path creates controlled negative pressure that draws the flue gases towards the chimney independently of the current external conditions. The fan is synchronized with the boiler's operation so that it runs exactly when the boiler is burning fuel, and its output is sufficient to compensate for the typical natural draught deficit found in most problematic chimney structures.

Installing the PV150 is also a significantly cheaper and faster solution than construction renovation or complete chimney replacement — in many cases it is sufficient to restore the full functionality and output of the boiler without interfering with the building's structure.

How to recognize signs of insufficient chimney draught in practice

In addition to professional measurement, there are several practical signs that can alert a boiler owner to a possible problem with insufficient chimney draught even before ordering a measurement. These include, in particular, repeated smoke leakage into the boiler room space when opening the hopper door while loading fuel — in a system with sufficient draught, this phenomenon should be only minimal and short-lived. Another signal is noticeably lower boiler output compared to catalog values, even with quality, well-dried fuel and correct primary and secondary air settings.

Increased tar and soot formation on the walls of the heat exchanger and in the flue gas path, requiring more frequent cleaning than usual, can also signal that the combustion process is not proceeding optimally due to unstable flue gas exhaust. Finally, if problems with the boiler's operation worsen during specific weather conditions (strong wind, fog, periods of high or, conversely, low atmospheric pressure), this is a further indicator that the chimney's natural draught is at the limit of its capability and the active PV150 flue gas exhaust could solve the problem.

We recommend not relying solely on your own observation and, in case of suspected draught problems, contacting a professional — a chimney sweep or the boiler's service technician — who can carry out precise measurement and recommend the most suitable solution, which may be either installing the PV150 or, in some cases, modifying the flue gas path or chimney itself.

Installation and commissioning

Recommended installation procedure for the additional flue gas exhaust PV150:

  1. Before installation, have the actual chimney draught professionally assessed (pressure difference measurement) by a chimney sweep or service technician, to confirm that the problem really is insufficient draught and not another cause (leakage in the flue gas path, incorrect boiler settings, etc.).
  2. The fan is installed directly in the flue gas path between the boiler outlet and the chimney inlet, at a suitable location accessible for future maintenance and cleaning.
  3. Make sure the fan is correctly oriented according to the direction of flue gas flow marked on the device body.
  4. Connect the electrical power supply and the connection to the boiler's control unit according to the enclosed diagram, so that the fan runs synchronously with the burner's operation (and not independently/continuously).
  5. After connection, carry out a trial run and verify smooth combustion without smoke leakage when loading fuel, ideally under various weather conditions over the course of several days.
  6. Schedule regular inspection and cleaning of the fan blades from soot deposits, at least once a year as part of the routine servicing of the flue gas path.

Entrust the installation of the additional flue gas exhaust exclusively to a qualified service technician experienced with flue gas systems of solid fuel boilers, ideally in cooperation with a chimney sweep inspection.

Compatibility with ATTACK boilers

The PV150 is intended for wood gasification boilers of the ATTACK DP, DPX (STANDARD and PROFI) and SLX PROFI series in the power range of 15–45 kW. Before ordering, we recommend having the actual chimney draught measured on the specific building, to confirm that the cause of boiler operation problems really is insufficient draught and not another factor (e.g. door leakage, incorrectly set primary/secondary air, fuel moisture).

Practical recommendations and relation to choosing a DP, DPX, SLX boiler

It is worth considering the additional flue gas exhaust PV150 already at the design stage of a new boiler room, if it is known in advance that the planned chimney will be lower or shorter than commonly recommended for the given boiler output, or if the flue gas path will run a long distance through several floors. In such a case, it is worthwhile to plan the fan's mounting location directly when designing the flue gas path layout, thus avoiding later additional modifications.

When renovating an older house, where the original solid fuel boiler is being replaced with a more modern ATTACK DP, DPX or SLX gasification boiler, it is important to realize that gasification boilers generally have higher requirements for chimney draught stability than older, simpler constructions with natural draught. A chimney that worked without problems with the original boiler may therefore not automatically be suitable for a new, more powerful gasification heat source — installing the PV150 in such cases often prevents unnecessary complaints and dissatisfaction with the new boiler's output, which would actually be caused by an insufficient chimney, not the boiler itself.

We recommend having the seller or service technician assess the parameters of the existing chimney (height, diameter, material, number and angles of the flue gas path bends) right when purchasing a DP/DPX/SLX boiler — in case of doubt, it is cheaper and simpler to add the PV150 right during the boiler installation than to deal with insufficient output and fuel loading problems after several months of unsatisfactory operation.

The PV150 fan is a robust device intended for long-term operation in the demanding environment of flue gases from wood combustion, its lifespan with regular annual maintenance (cleaning the blades, checking the electrical connection) is comparable to the lifespan of other components of the boiler's flue gas path.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find out if my chimney has insufficient draught?

The most reliable way is to have a professional measurement of the pressure difference (draught) in the chimney carried out by a chimney sweep or boiler service technician; common symptoms of insufficient draught include smoke leaking out when loading fuel, reduced boiler output, and repeated flame extinguishing.

Does the PV150 also solve the problem of bad weather, not just a structurally short chimney?

Yes, the active fan compensates for fluctuations in natural draught caused by wind, low atmospheric pressure, and temperature inversions, not just permanently insufficient draught of a short or poorly sized chimney.

Do I need to structurally modify the chimney because of the PV150?

No, the fan is installed directly into the existing flue gas path between the boiler and the chimney without the need for structural intervention on the chimney structure itself.

Does the fan run continuously, or only during boiler operation?

The fan is connected so that it runs synchronously with the boiler burner's operation — it starts and stops together with the boiler, and is not intended for continuous operation independent of the boiler.

How often does the fan need to be cleaned?

We recommend inspecting and cleaning the blades of soot deposits at least once a year as part of the routine annual maintenance of the flue gas path and chimney.

Is the PV150 also suitable for multi-storey buildings with a long flue gas path?

Yes, it is precisely in these cases, where a long path with multiple bends increases resistance to natural draught, that the active fan is a particularly effective solution.

Can the PV150 also be used with boilers other than ATTACK DP/DPX/SLX?

The device is designed and recommended by the manufacturer specifically for the 15–45 kW power range of ATTACK DP/DPX/SLX boilers; for other brands we recommend consulting the manufacturer or service for flue gas path compatibility.

Does installing the PV150 affect the boiler warranty?

Professional installation carried out according to the manufacturer's instructions does not negatively affect the boiler warranty — on the contrary, properly functioning flue gas exhaust contributes to stable and safe boiler operation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the PV150 also affect emissions and combustion efficiency, or does it only solve draught?

Stable and sufficient flue gas exhaust is one of the conditions for proper, complete combustion of wood in a gasification boiler — unstable or insufficient draught leads to incomplete combustion, higher emissions and lower efficiency, so stabilizing the draught with the PV150 fan indirectly also contributes to better combustion and lower emissions.

Is a chimney inspection still needed after installing the PV150?

Yes, regular chimney sweep inspection and cleaning remain mandatory and necessary even after installing the active flue gas exhaust — the fan solves insufficient draught, but does not replace the routine maintenance and inspection of the chimney structure itself.

Summary

The PV150 is an effective and structurally undemanding solution for all cases where natural chimney draught is not sufficient for the reliable operation of an ATTACK DP, DPX or SLX gasification boiler. The active fan in the flue gas path ensures stable flue gas exhaust regardless of the height and condition of the existing chimney or current weather conditions, thereby restoring the boiler's full output, improving loading comfort, and reducing the risk of problems associated with insufficient draught.
