At first glance, it seems like a simple thing – you insert it into the radiator, plug it into the socket, and the radiator heats up. In reality, however, it is a bit more complicated, and bad decisions here can cost money, nerves, and several weekends of redoing. In this article, I have gathered the most frequently asked questions – from emails, phone calls, and direct conversations with customers, plumbers, and electricians. I try to write the answers as if I were explaining them on-site: without unnecessary embellishment, but with sufficient technical depth so that you can be sure of your decision.

What exactly is an electric rod and how does it work?

An electric rod is a heating element that is inserted directly into the collector of a cast iron radiator instead of a standard filling valve or plug. Inside the rod is a resistance wire (similar to an electric water heater), which generates heat when electric current passes through it. This heat is transferred to the liquid inside the radiator – whether it is water or an antifreeze mixture – and it further distributes the heat throughout the entire radiator body.

Most rods on the market have an integrated thermostat that monitors the temperature of the liquid in the radiator and turns the heating on or off according to the set value. Thanks to this, the rod does not work continuously, but cycles – which significantly reduces electricity consumption compared to an unregulated system.

A coil works on the same principle – a resistance heating element that is immersed in liquid. The difference is in the shape and construction. While the rod is compact, rigid, and inserted through one opening, the coil is a longer, flexible or rigid element that can pass through a larger part of the radiator's internal volume. Does the radiator have to be filled with water, or can I use another liquid?

This is one of the most important questions, especially if you are installing an electric rod in a radiator in a room where freezing is a risk – for example, in a cottage, weekend house, garage, or winter garden. An electric rod itself works with any suitable liquid. The problem arises when the radiator is filled with regular water in an area where the temperature drops below zero.

Water expands when it freezes and can crack the welds or connections of the radiator. If the radiator is used only as an electric heater – not connected to central heating – and there is a risk of freezing, it is ideal to fill it with an antifreeze mixture. Antifreeze mixture TERMSOL EKO is a product specifically designed for this purpose: it is safe, has good thermal capacity, and in the correct ratio with water protects the system even at very low temperatures.

When filling the radiator with antifreeze mixture, a few principles apply:

  • Do not fill the radiator with pure antifreeze mixture without dilution – the manufacturer specifies the recommended ratio with water.
  • Use distilled or softened water, not hard tap water.
  • Never mix the mixture with another brand or type of antifreeze mixture.
  • Leave a small air gap when filling – the liquid expands when heated.

What power of electric rod do I need?

Power is probably the most common question and at the same time the topic where customers make the most mistakes – mostly in the direction of "I'll take a bigger one, just to be sure". The reality is that the power of the rod must be adapted to the size of the room, the thermal insulation properties of the building, and the use of the radiator.

Practical experience from customer practice says this:

  • 150 W – ideal for small bathrooms up to 4–5 m², where the radiator is primarily for drying towels and maintaining a pleasant temperature. Consumption is minimal, regulation is simple.   • 300 W – suitable for medium-sized bathrooms (5–10 m²), or for older buildings with poor insulation, where you want to get real heat from the radiator.   • 600–900 W – for larger spaces, recreational buildings, or situations where the cast iron radiator is the only heating element in a room with high heat losses.

Will any rod fit into any panel radiator?

No, and this is where the most common purchasing mistakes occur. An electric rod must fit into the collector’s opening in terms of:

  • Thread diameter – the most common is G 1/2" (external), but there are also radiators with G 3/4" or other dimensions.
  • Length of the rod – the rod must not be longer than the internal height of the radiator’s collector, otherwise it will not fit physically or will rub against the connection.
  • Position of the inlet – the rod is usually mounted into the lower collector, into an opening originally intended for a valve or plug. This opening can be in different positions depending on the radiator model.

Always measure the internal width of the collector (when it is removed, or at least estimate it based on the radiator model) and check the diameter of the existing plug or valve. Can I use an electric rod even if the radiator is connected to central heating?

Yes, and this is a very common scenario: a panel radiator is connected to the central heating system, but you want it to be functional even outside the heating season – for example in summer, when you want to dry towels or keep the bathroom warmer without turning on the entire boiler.

  • Allows the installation of an electric rod into the radiator without the need to disconnect it from the heating system.
  • Can switch between the central heating mode and electric heating mode.

Is the installation of an electric rod a job for an electrician, or can I do it myself?

From a legal standpoint: the installation of the rod into the radiator (screwing into the thread, filling with fluid) is not an electrical job – it is an installation task that can be performed by an informed person. However, the electrical connection to the 230 V network must be done by a qualified person, if it is a fixed connection (for example from a wall distribution box). If you connect the rod to a standard 230 V socket with an earth pin, you can do it yourself.

Important safety rules during installation:

  • The radiator must be filled with fluid before turning on the rod – dry operation will damage the resistive element within a few seconds.
  • The rod must be tightly sealed (the seal is usually part of the package), otherwise there is a risk of fluid leakage.
  • The power cable must not be in contact with the hot surface of the radiator.
  • The socket must have an earth pin and be on the appropriate circuit breaker.

Why does my radiator with an electric rod heat only in the lower part?

This is one of the most common complaints I encounter. There can be several reasons:

  • Air inside the radiator – an air pocket prevents the circulation of fluid in the upper part of the body. Solution: bleed the radiator through the bleed valve (usually in the upper corner).
  • Short rod – if the rod is too short and heats only a small volume of fluid near the inlet, heat spreads slowly by natural convection. A longer rod or coil can heat a larger volume.
  • Incorrect position of the rod – a rod mounted into a side or upper opening may have problems with even heat distribution. The ideal position is the lower opening.
  • Too dense antifreeze mixture – too high a concentration of antifreeze mixture worsens thermal conductivity. Follow the recommended dilution ratios.

If you have bled the radiator and the problem persists, check the length and placement of the rod. Uneven heating is almost always related to one of the above reasons.

How long does it take for a panel radiator with an electric rod to heat up?

It depends on several factors: the power of the rod, the volume of fluid in the radiator, the size of the panel itself, and the desired temperature. Approximately: a standard panel radiator for a bathroom (height 1200–1600 mm, width 500 mm) contains about 3–6 liters of fluid.

A rod with a power of 150 W heats this volume to a pleasant 40–50 °C (surface temperature of the panel) in about 20–40 minutes. A 300 W rod can do it in about 10–20 minutes. Naturally, in a well-heated room with low heat loss, the time will be shorter.

From practice: customers who want the bathroom to be warm in the morning when getting up set a timer or smart switch to turn on the rod 30–60 minutes before. Modern rods with a thermostat remember the set temperature and with a suitable socket timer you can easily program a daily schedule.

The thermostat on the rod keeps turning off – is it a fault?

Not necessarily. The thermostat is working exactly as it should: when the fluid in the radiator reaches the set temperature, the thermostat turns off the rod. When the temperature drops (due to heat loss to the environment), the thermostat turns the rod on again. This cyclic behavior is normal and desirable – it is precisely because of this that consumption is not unnecessarily high.

If you think the thermostat is turning off too quickly or too late, check the temperature setting. Most rods have a rotating regulator with a range of about 20–60 °C (some from 30 to 70 °C). Setting the temperature too low will cause the rod to operate only briefly and the radiator will never be warm enough. Can an electric rod explode or cause a fire?

When used properly, the risk is practically zero. Rods certified for the European market (CE marking) have multiple levels of protection: the primary thermostat regulates temperature, and a secondary safety thermostat (thermal fuse) turns off the device if the critical temperature is exceeded. Without liquid (dry operation), the heating element would overheat quickly – that is why it is essential to have the radiator filled before turning it on.

Common causes of problems from practice:

  • Turning on the rod in an empty (unfilled) radiator – damage to the heating element.
  • Using extension cords without sufficient conductor cross-section for more powerful rods.
  • Damaged cable insulation in contact with the hot radiator.
  • Leaky thread – leakage of liquid onto electrical parts.

If you follow the installation instructions and use certified products, an electric rod is just as safe as any other electric heating element.

Can I install an electric rod in a vertical or horizontal position?

It depends on the specific rod model and the radiator construction. Most rods are designed for vertical mounting (rod pointing up or down in the collector). Some models also allow horizontal mounting, but it is always necessary to confirm this in the product's technical documentation – not all thermostats operate reliably in a horizontal position (the bimetallic or capillary temperature sensor must be submerged in liquid, not in an air pocket).

If you install a rod in a horizontally rotated (so-called horizontal) panel radiator, verify the model's compatibility with this orientation. In case of doubts, consult the seller or technical support.

What to do if the rod stops working?

If an electric rod stops heating, it may be due to several reasons:

  • Burnt fuse or tripped circuit breaker – the first step is always to check the home circuit breaker panel.
  • Thermal fuse of the rod has tripped – during dry operation or overheating, the internal fuse may trip. Some models allow resetting it by pressing a button on the rod (after cooling down), others need to be replaced.
  • Thermostat malfunction – the thermostat may be stuck in the "off" position. Diagnosis: measure the voltage at the input and output of the thermostat with a multimeter.
  • Broken heating element – this means the end of the rod's life, replacement is necessary.

What is the lifespan of an electric rod?

With proper use and with liquid of appropriate quality, an electric rod can last 10–15 years or more. The most common reason for premature failure is corrosion of the heating element due to aggressive liquid (too hard water, unsuitable antifreeze mixture or a mixture whose inhibitors have been depleted). It is recommended to change the liquid in a closed panel radiator (with antifreeze mixture) every 3–5 years according to the manufacturer's instructions for the mixture.

Another factor is the number of on/off cycles: a thermostat that cycles 100 times a day wears out faster than a thermostat with an optimally set temperature. Therefore, it is good to set the thermostat to the actual required temperature, not to maximum.

Can I replace an electric rod without draining the radiator?

Yes, it is possible if you have the right valves. If a corner four-way valve (such as VUA-40) is installed on the inlet port, you can close the flow with it, replace the rod, and open the valve again without the need to drain the entire system. If you do not have such a valve, you will have to drain the radiator at least partially to prevent liquid from spilling out when unscrewing the rod.

Tip from practice: When replacing the rod, have a cloth and a small container ready – even with the valve closed, some liquid will drip from the space between the rod and the valve. It is not a large amount, but it is better to be prepared.

What is the electricity consumption of an electric rod and how much will it cost me?

The consumption of the rod depends on its power and on how many hours a day it actually heats (i.e., not how many hours it is turned on, but how many hours the thermostat allows the heating element to work).

Example calculation for a 300 W rod in a bathroom, turned on for 8 hours a day:

  • Maximum consumption: 300 W × 8 h = 2.4 kWh/day
  • Real consumption (thermostat works 50% of the time): approx. 1.2 kWh/day
  • Monthly: approx. 36 kWh
  • At an electricity price of 0.20 €/kWh: approx. 7.20 €/month

For a 150 W rod under the same scenario, the consumption is roughly half – about 3–4 €/month. This is a very acceptable amount for a typical household for all-day heating of a bathroom and towel drying.

Can I use an electric rod in a radiator filled with tap water?

Yes, but only if freezing is not a risk and the water in the system is sufficiently softened. Hard water with high calcium content accelerates limescale formation on the heating element, which shortens the rod's lifespan. Do I need an electric socket in the bathroom? What are the regulations?

The socket in the bathroom must comply with the STN 33 2000-7-701 standard, which defines so-called protective zones. In most bathrooms, the socket must be at least 0.6 m from the edge of the bathtub or shower tray and must have a protective pin (grounding). If there is no socket in the bathroom yet, its installation should be done by an electrician with a valid professional qualification.

What happens if I forget to turn off the rod when leaving the house?

Nothing dramatic – the thermostat ensures that the rod does not heat the liquid above the set temperature. The radiator will heat up and then the thermostat will turn the rod off. Of course, you will be paying for electricity unnecessarily if the bathroom is empty for a long time. Solution: a socket timer or a smart socket with remote control.

I have a coiled or rod system – what is the real difference in practice?

The coil covers a larger volume inside the radiator, which can lead to a more even heating of the entire body. The rod is more compact, easier to replace, and usually cheaper. For standard medium-sized bathroom panel radiators, the difference in practice is minimal – both systems work well if properly dimensioned. Can I connect two electric rods to one radiator?

Technically, it is possible if the radiator has two suitable openings (for example, one at the bottom left and one at the bottom right), but we do not recommend it in practice. The thermostats of the two rods would need to be synchronized, otherwise one would work more than the other. In addition, the total power must be in line with the electrical fuse and socket capacity. If you need higher power, choose a single rod with higher power.

Can an electric rod serve as the only heat source in a bathroom?

Yes, and it is a common scenario. If the bathroom is well insulated, has a double-glazed window, and an area of up to 6–8 m², a 300 W rod is able to maintain a comfortable temperature even as the only heat source. For larger bathrooms, older buildings with poor insulation, or rooms with an external wall, consider a higher power (600–900 W) or an additional heat source. A basic guideline is that for 1 m² of a well-insulated bathroom, approximately 40–50 W of installed power is sufficient.
