Tools
- Adjustable wrench (French key) or flat wrench 55–60 mm – depends on the size of the hex on the rod. Most rods have a 55 mm hex, but there are also rods with 50 mm or 60 mm.
- Small French key or flat wrench for securing – sometimes a second wrench is useful for holding the adapter.
- Screwdriver – flat and crosshead – for possible disassembly of covers and screws.
- Bucket or tray (at least 5 liters) – for draining water from the radiator.
- Drain hose – 50–100 cm – connects to the drain valve.
- Multimeter – to check if there is real voltage in the socket and if it is properly grounded.
- Teflon tape or hemp fiber with sealant – for sealing the thread.
- Cloth and bucket to wipe up any puddles.

A panel radiator usually has a threaded hole G 1½" (BSP) on one of the lower crossbars or on the side of the body, into which the rod is screwed. Some radiators have this hole covered with a blind plug, others have a plug instead of a shut-off valve. Before installation, check:
- Exactly where the rod hole is located (usually the lower part of the radiator, sometimes the side)
- What thread the hole has – most common is G 1½" (outer diameter approx. 47.8 mm)
- Whether the radiator is currently connected to central heating or is disconnected

Turning off the heat supply and draining the water
If the radiator is connected to the central heating system, you must ensure that hot water is not flowing into it and that there is no pressure inside before installation. Procedure:
- Turn off the boiler or close the valves on the supply and return pipes of the radiator (usually a thermostatic valve and a shut-off valve on the lower crossbar).
- Wait until the radiator cools down – hot water can cause burns when the plug is released.
- Prepare a bucket and a hose. Connect the hose to the drain cock (if the radiator has one), or place the bucket directly under the rod hole.
- Gently unscrew the plug/blind plug from the rod hole. Water will start to flow out. It is not always the full volume – sometimes just a few deciliters, sometimes several liters if the radiator is large.
- If you have access to the air vent (bleed valve) in the upper part of the radiator, open it – this will facilitate draining by allowing air to enter from above.
Mounting the rod itself – step by step
Step 1: Preparing the thread and sealing
When the radiator is empty and the plug has been removed, look into the opening. The thread should be clean and free of corrosion. If you see deposits or rust from the old sealing, clean them with a cloth or sponge. Never mount the rod without sealing on the thread – the connection may leak.
Most quality rods come with a rubber or silicone sealing washer that is placed under the hexagonal nut of the rod. If the sealing is not included in the package or is damaged, use Teflon tape: wrap it 6–8 times around the rod thread in the tightening direction (i.e., clockwise when viewed from the bottom). Wrap the tape tightly, without folds.
Warning: If there is still old hemp fiber or hard sealant inside the radiator, carefully remove it so that it does not fall into the bottom of the radiator. Remaining pieces can clog the internal channels.
Step 2: Inserting the rod into the opening
Hold the rod in your left hand and start screwing it into the opening. The first 2–3 threads should be tightened by hand – without tools. This is important because if the thread is incorrect (which is rare, but vigilance is necessary), you will immediately feel it (so-called thread cross-threading = the thread does not screw in smoothly). If there is resistance from the beginning, stop and check whether you have the correct rod for the given thread.
Once the rod is manually tightened at least 3–4 threads, take a wrench and continue. The tightening direction is always clockwise (if you are standing in front of the radiator and looking directly at the opening).
Step 3: Tightening the rod
This is a critical step. The rod must be tightened enough to prevent leakage, but it must not be over-tightened – because the radiator is made of steel or stainless steel and the thread can be damaged.
Practical rule from practice: after manual tightening (when the rod already offers resistance), add approximately 1–1.5 turns with the wrench. If you have a torque wrench, a good value for G 1½" is around 60–80 Nm. Without a torque wrench, tighten with "medium force" – not with full force, but also not just with one hand. Both hands on the wrench, slow and smooth movement. When the wrench starts to clearly resist and stops moving, you are done.
Watch the rod orientation: The power cable and thermostat display must point downward or sideways – depending on the rod design. Most rods with cable outlets on the right/left are designed so that the cable does not hang directly down through the radiator wall. Check that the rod is in a good position and the cable can be led to the socket naturally.
Step 4: Filling the radiator with water or antifreeze mixture
If the radiator is connected to central heating, it is sufficient to open the inlet and outlet valves again – the water will be pushed in automatically. Use the air vent to release air (listen for hissing, unscrew it slowly and hold the hose or cloth until clean water without bubbles starts to flow).

- Keep the air vent open.

- When the mixture starts to flow out of the air vent, close it.

Step 5: Checking the seal before connecting to electricity
When the radiator is filled, let it stand for a few minutes and carefully check the area around the rod thread. Use a dry white paper towel – place it on the thread and wait. - Bathroom with daily use: 40–50 °C (radiator will be comfortably warm)

Four-way valve – when to use it and how to connect it
If you want to retain the possibility of heating the panel radiator from central heating (for example, in winter from the system, in summer electrically), you need a four-way valve. Without it, you cannot have the electric rod connected and at the same time have the hot water supply from the boiler open – this would be physically impossible (the rod would block the opening) or dangerous (hot water from central heating would flow backwards through the rod into the electric part).

- Installation without sealing – the most common cause of leakage. Sealing is always necessary, even if you think the thread is sufficiently tight.
- Switching on the rod before filling with water – the heating element will immediately burn out. First water, then the electrical plug.
- Incorrect position of the thermostat – some rods do not work properly if the thermostat points upwards. The thermostat usually measures ambient (air) temperature, not water – so it must be at least partially outside the body of the radiator.

- Verify that the rod cable is not in contact with the hot surface of the radiator and is not pinched.

Scenario 1: Old radiator with rusty thread
I have encountered cases where a radiator had been installed 20–30 years ago and the threaded hole was rusted or had remnants of old hemp sealing, which had turned into a hard stone. In such a case, you need to clean the hole before installation – with a soft brush, or possibly with a special rust remover. If the thread looks damaged, consult a professional to decide whether it makes sense to install a rod into it or rather replace the radiator.
Scenario 2: Radiator in a cottage without heating in winter
Homeowners know this well – they want the towel radiator in the bathroom to be warm only when they are at the cottage, but they don't want the water to freeze and crack the radiator in winter. The solution is to disconnect it from the central heating and fill it with antifreeze, followed by the installation of an electric heating rod with a thermostat set to a minimum temperature (e.g., 10 °C). The rod consumes a minimal amount of electricity, but ensures that the radiator never freezes.

In an apartment building, central heating is usually turned off in summer. Many residents want a warm radiator in the bathroom throughout the year. Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Do I have to drain the entire central heating system in the house when installing an electric rod?
No. It is sufficient to close the inlet and outlet valves of the specific towel radiator and drain only the water from it. The rest of the system remains untouched. Of course, if the valves are not working or the radiator does not have shut-off valves, the situation is different – in that case, it is necessary to drain at least part of the system. In such a case, it is worth having the work done by a plumber.
What if the rod does not heat up after installation, even though it is plugged into the socket?
The most common cause: the thermostat is set to a low temperature and the water temperature in the radiator is already higher (e.g., after heating via the central system). Can I use plain water instead of antifreeze?
If the radiator is in a heated apartment or house throughout the year and there is no risk of freezing, plain water is fine. However, if there is any risk of temperature dropping below 0 °C (cottage, unoccupied space, power outage in winter), you must use antifreeze. Plain water expands when frozen and cracks the radiator – such damage is irreversible.
How long does the installation of an electric rod take?
