Out of all the questions we deal with when selling heating rods, this one is by far the most common. A customer has a panel radiator in the bathroom, wants to connect an electric rod to it, and is faced with a simple, yet seemingly unsolvable problem: what thread does the hole in their radiator have? What diameter rod fits there? Is it an imperial thread or a metric one? And what is this "SU" thread mentioned in technical specifications anyway?
This article will cover the topic from the basics. You will find an overview of standard threads and diameters, a guide on how to properly measure and identify the thread in your radiator, an overview of reducing adapters and seals, and also practical tips from installation practice, where we have seen dozens of cases where a customer bought an unsuitable product simply because they didn't check one small technical detail.
Why choosing the correct thread is important at all
An electric rod is essentially a hermetically sealed heater that is screwed into the radiator through a threaded hole. This hole is standardized, but there are several "standards", and they are not interchangeable. If you choose a rod with a different thread than the one in the radiator, one of the following things will happen:
- The rod simply cannot be screwed in – the threads do not match and during the first attempt to push it in, either the radiator or the rod will be damaged.
- The rod can be freely inserted, but cannot be tightened – the thread is loose, and the system will leak.
- The rod seems to be tightened, but in reality the thread is cut and the seal is compressed in an uncontrolled way – the leak will appear after the first heating, when the pressure in the system increases.
All of these scenarios are unpleasant and expensive – dismantling a flooded bathroom is not something you want to deal with on a Sunday evening. That is why it pays to spend at least an hour on this topic before purchasing.
Standard threads for electric rods: overview and explanation
Panel radiators sold on the Slovak and Czech markets come from various countries – Italy, Poland, Czech Republic, Turkey, China – and each manufacturer historically preferred a different thread standard. Today the situation is partially unified, but several common variants still apply.
1¼ inch thread (G 1¼") – the most widespread standard
This is currently the dominant standard for panel radiators sold in Central Europe. The designation "G 1¼" means an external cylindrical thread with a nominal diameter of 1 and a quarter inches. In millimeters, this corresponds to an external thread diameter of approximately 41.9 mm. The thread pitch (distance between the threads) is 11 threads per inch, which is the standard BSP (British Standard Pipe).
The majority of modern rods including electric rod with thermostat 150 W in white finish or electric rod with thermostat 300 W in chrome are manufactured with exactly this thread. This is because manufacturers of electric rods have long established this dimension as an industrial standard – they know that it covers the vast majority of radiators on the European market.
1 inch thread (G 1") – older standard, still common
A one-inch thread occurs mainly in older panel radiators or in some cheaper models with smaller pipe cross-sections. The external thread diameter is approximately 33.2 mm. This is a significantly smaller hole than 1¼" – the difference is almost 9 mm in diameter, which is clearly visible to the naked eye.
If you have a radiator with a G 1" thread, you can still use a standard 1¼" rod, but you will need a reduction. More about that in the chapter on reducing adapters.
1½ inch thread (G 1½") – larger radiators
This thread occurs less frequently, but still – it is about radiators with a larger profile, where the crossbars are stronger and the threaded hole accordingly wider. The external thread diameter is approximately 47.8 mm. In practice, we see it in some Italian radiators of premium brands and in older German products.
Metric thread M30 × 1.5 – a special case
Some manufacturers of electric rods – mainly from Asia and partially also from Poland – use a metric thread M30 × 1.5. This is not a BSP thread, it is a metric standard, where the number 30 denotes the external diameter in millimeters and 1.5 is the pitch in millimeters. This type of thread occurs more often in accessories (seals, cover plates) rather than directly in the mounting into the radiator – but we encounter it in special rods for electric water heaters.
Conclusion on threads: what is really common
In 90% of cases you will encounter with Slovak and Czech installations of panel radiators, it is the G 1¼" thread (1 and a quarter inch, BSP). If you buy a new radiator from a regular online store, it will almost certainly have exactly this thread. If you have an older radiator or an import from a non-standard source, it is worth measuring it physically or checking with the manufacturer.
How to physically measure the thread in your radiator
Theory is one thing, practice is another. You have a radiator in front of you and want to know what fits into it. Here is the procedure that an experienced plumber would use:
Step 1: Drain and open the plug
An electric rod is mounted into the lower side hole of the panel radiator – the same one where the blind plug was previously, or where the filling/drain valve is located. First, you need to open this hole. If the radiator is part of an active central heating system, it is necessary to drain the system or at least close the corresponding valves. If the radiator is empty (you will be operating it with only an electric rod), you can open the hole directly.
Step 2: Measure the internal diameter of the hole with a caliper
Place the caliper (sliding gauge) on the internal diameter of the thread – that is, you are measuring the light of the hole, not the external diameter of the threaded head. The values you are looking for are:
- Internal diameter around 27–28 mm: thread G 1"
- Internal diameter around 35–36 mm: thread G 1¼"
- Internal diameter around 41–42 mm: thread G 1½"
These values are approximate – the actual thread dimensions are standardized, but manufacturing tolerances can slightly distort the measurement. If the measured number fits one of the standards only roughly, it is still okay.
Step 3: Count the Threads
If you are unsure based on diameter alone, you can count the number of threads per inch (25.4 mm). Place a caliper or ruler along the thread and count how many threads fit into 25.4 mm. For BSP (inch) threads, it is typically 11 threads per inch for G 1¼" and the same 11 for G 1" – so the thread count alone won't distinguish them, but it confirms the inch standard against the metric one.
Step 4: Compare with the Old Plug
The fastest method we recommend to customers is to bring the old blanking plug that was in the opening and compare its external thread with the technical parameters of the rod. If the old plug has G 1¼" and the rod also has G 1¼", they are compatible. Most plugs have the dimension stamped or marked directly on the body – check it with a magnifying glass or take a photo.
Reduction Adapters: When the Thread Doesn't Match
You don't always have to buy a new rod just because the radiator thread doesn't match the standard G 1¼". Reduction adapters are available on the market that elegantly solve this problem. They work as a transition – one side has a thread matching the radiator opening, the other side has a G 1¼" thread for the rod.
Reduction from G 1½" to G 1¼"
If your radiator has a G 1½" thread and you want to install a standard rod with G 1¼", you will use a reduction adapter 1½" → 1¼". This adapter has an external thread of G 1½" (screws into the radiator) and an internal thread of G 1¼" (accepts the rod). The seal is applied to the adapter thread, not directly to the rod.
Reduction from G 1¼" to G 1" (expansion)
A less common situation, but it does happen: the radiator has a G 1" thread, but you want to use a standard G 1¼" rod. In this case, you need an expanding reduction – an external thread of G 1" is screwed into the radiator, and an external thread of G 1¼" is on the other side for the rod. It is important that the wall thickness of the adapter is sufficient and made of suitable material (brass or galvanized steel, not cheap zinc).
Sealing the Adapter
Every adapter must be properly sealed – most commonly, this is done using hemp rope with paste (traditional method), or Teflon tape (PTFE tape), or a pre-installed rubber O-ring. Make sure the seal is heat-resistant – in a system with an electric rod, water temperature can reach 60–70 °C with a thermostat setting.
Length of the Electric Rod: How It Relates to Diameter
Now that we're on the topic of dimensions, we cannot overlook the length of the rod – it is the second key parameter that determines whether the rod fits into the radiator not only in terms of the thread, but also physically. An electric rod must be long enough to heat the water volume in the radiator effectively, but at the same time it must not be too long – otherwise it will hit the other side of the radiator or the internal partitions.
The length of the rod is measured from the front of the thread (where the seal sits) to the end of the heating body. The internal height (depth) of a panel radiator typically ranges from 400 to 1200 mm depending on the model's height. Standard electric rods for bathroom panel radiators are supplied in lengths of 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 800 and 1000 mm.
Recommended rule: the rod should be at least 60–70% of the internal height of the radiator. A shorter rod will only heat the lower part, resulting in uneven heat distribution. A longer rod, if installed into a side opening, must fit freely without touching the opposite wall – there should be at least 10–15 mm clearance between the end of the rod and the opposite wall.
Practical Scenarios from Installation Practice
Scenario 1: New Italian radiator, customer buys rod online
The customer ordered an Italian panel radiator from another online store and now wants to buy an electric rod. The radiator came with a blanking plug with a G 1¼" thread. The customer found this out by having the plug in hand and, upon the seller's request, measured it with a caliper – the external thread diameter of the plug was 41.5 mm, which corresponds to G 1¼". He purchased electric rod with thermostat 150 W in chrome, which has exactly a G 1¼" thread, and the installation went smoothly without any problems.
Scenario 2: Old radiator of unknown brand with different thread
The customer had a ladder-type radiator in the bathroom that was 15 years old. The opening in the radiator had an internal diameter of about 27 mm – that is G 1". They purchased a reduction G 1¼" → G 1", sealed it, and screwed it into the radiator, then inserted a standard rod G 1¼" into the reduction. The system worked, but we would like to remind the customer that with such an old radiator, it is advisable to thoroughly flush and check the tightness of the entire system before use, as the threads may be worn after years of use.
Scenario 3: The customer wants to continue using central heating with an electric rod
A very common scenario – the customer wants to connect the radiator in the bathroom to central heating, but also wants to be able to heat it with electric rods when the heating is not in operation (for example, out of season or during a boiler failure). In this case, the corner four-way valve VUA-40 comes into play, which allows the combination of both modes. The thread of this valve is also G 1¼", so it fits into the entire system without any reductions. Scenario 4: The customer plans a system with an antifreeze mixture
Some customers want to fill the radiator in the bathroom or in areas where freezing is a risk with an antifreeze mixture instead of pure water. In such a case, the choice of sealing and the material of the threaded connection is even more important – some mixtures are more aggressive to certain types of seals. When using antifreeze mixture TERMSOL EKO, it is important that all seals are made of EPDM rubber or silicone, which are resistant to glycol mixtures. How to determine the thread size when you don't have a caliper or the original plug
Some customers find themselves in a situation where they do not have a sliding caliper and the old plug is lost somewhere. What then?
Method of a spoon and a paper tape
This is not a scientific method, but it can help in an emergency. Wrap a paper tape or a thin ribbon around the radiator opening from the outside (if the opening is covered by an adapter or if you are measuring the external thread of the plug). Measure the length of the tape that corresponds to the circumference – and divide it by the number π (3.14159). You will get the diameter. A diameter of 41–42 mm is G 1¼", a diameter of 33–34 mm is G 1".
Comparative screwing
If you have some threaded fittings or pipe connectors in inch sizes in your workshop or garage, you can carefully place them against the opening and compare. Threads of different sizes in the BSP standard are clearly visually distinguishable – G 1" is significantly narrower than G 1¼".
Ask the radiator manufacturer or seller
If you know the brand and model of your radiator, it is enough to ask the manufacturer or look up the technical specifications. Almost every manufacturer of ladder radiators lists the diameter of the threaded opening in the technical documentation. Look for the term "connection" or "pripojenie" in the technical specifications – there you will usually find "G 1¼" BSP" or an equivalent designation directly.
Sealing the thread: a detail that is often forgotten
When the customer finds out what thread they need and orders the correct rod, they are satisfied. But during installation, it turns out that the correct thread is not enough – the correct sealing is also important. And here there is surprisingly a lot of room for error.
Rubber O-ring versus thread sealing
Electric rods for ladder radiators are delivered with one of two types of sealing:
- Flat rubber O-ring – sits on the end of the thread and seals the area between the rod and the radiator. It is easy to install, but requires a flat seating surface.
- Conical sealing – wedges into the conical seating surface in the radiator. Some radiators have a beveled (conical) surface at the entrance to the thread, others have a flat one.
For most modern rods with a thermostat, a flat O-ring is delivered, which is fully sufficient for flat seating surfaces. If you have an old radiator with a conical seat, it is advisable to consult with the rod manufacturer to see if their rubber O-ring is elastic enough to seal this geometry.
Material of the seal and temperature
For standard water systems with a temperature up to 70 °C, NBR rubber (nitrile rubber) is sufficient. If you plan a system with a higher temperature or with a glycol mixture, we recommend EPDM or silicone. Cheap Chinese rods are sometimes delivered with a thin PVC or PE film instead of a proper O-ring – this "saving" will result in a leak after 6–12 months of operation.
Thread marking on electric rods: what to look for in the catalog
When you look at product sheets for electric rods, you will encounter various ways the thread is marked. Here is an overview of what the different markings mean:
- G 1¼" or G 1¼ BSP – external cylindrical inch thread, 1 and a quarter inch. This is the sought-after marking for most radiators.
- 1¼" BSP – the same as above, just without the letter G.
- R 1¼" – conical inch thread (Whitworth). Note – R (conical) is a different type than G (cylindrical), even if the diameter fits! A conical thread is sealed by the cone itself, not by a seal.
- Rp 1¼" – internal conical thread – again inch, but internal. You can see this marking on fittings and valves, not on rods.
- DN32 – nominal diameter 32 mm. This is not a thread, but the pipe bore. A DN32 pipe usually has an external thread of G 1¼" – but the number 32 itself does not tell you the thread.

Special case: double thread (adapter in the rod packaging)
Some electric rods – especially premium rods with a thermostat – are also sold with a reducing adapter directly in the packaging. For example, the rod has a native G 1¼" thread, but a brass reduction G 1½" → G 1¼" is included in the packaging, allowing it to be installed into a larger hole. This is convenient, but also confusing – the customer must know which thread is the native one and which is just an additional adapter. Always read the full product description when ordering, not just the "1¼" in the title.
What else affects the compatibility of the rod and radiator
The correct thread and length are two main parameters, but in practice there are also other factors:
- Head diameter of the rod (wrench): Some rods have a larger hexagonal head that does not fit into a narrow gap between the tubes of a panel radiator. Check whether you have enough space for the wrench when tightening.
- Position of the hole: The electric rod is installed into the lower side hole. If your radiator has a different thread in this position than in the upper one, focus on the lower hole.
- Radiator material: Steel, aluminum, and stainless steel radiators may have different thread parameters – not only size, but also the quality of the thread surface. Be especially careful when tightening with aluminum – aluminum is softer and the thread can be more easily damaged by excessive torque.
- Power cable: The rod must be connected to the electrical grid (230 V). Make sure you have a properly dimensioned electrical connection in the bathroom (GFCI/FI circuit breaker, IP44 protection). This is not directly related to the thread, but it is a necessary condition for a functional installation.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
What thread do most panel radiators sold in Slovakia have?
The vast majority of modern panel radiators sold in Central Europe have a G 1¼" (BSP, cylindrical) thread. This size covers an estimated 85–90% of all installations. If you buy a new radiator from a regular e-shop or store, it will almost certainly have this thread. Older or cheaper radiators may have G 1" or G 1½" – so always check the specific unit.
Can I use a rod with a larger thread in a radiator with a smaller hole?
Not directly – a rod with a G 1¼" thread cannot be screwed into a G 1" hole without an adapter. These threads are not interchangeable. The solution is to purchase a reducing adapter G 1¼" → G 1", which you screw into the radiator and then insert the rod into. Apply sealing to the adapter thread when installing it into the radiator.
How do I know if I have damaged the thread during installation?
A damaged thread is noticeable because the rod or plug turns easily without normal resistance – the threads are "eaten". Another sign is water leakage even when the rod is tightened. If this happens, the radiator is usually permanently damaged – repairing a cut thread in cast iron or steel is only possible with professional equipment (threading tool, Helicoil insert). Therefore, always start by screwing manually and only tighten with a wrench – never force the thread.
Is there a difference between G 1¼" and R 1¼" thread?
Yes, and it is an important difference. G denotes a cylindrical thread (Whitworth cylindrical), where the thread has the same height along its entire length. R denotes a conical thread (Whitworth conical), where the thread tapers and the sealing is created by the conical fit itself. These two types are NOT interchangeable – even if they have the same nominal diameter, the sealing geometry is different. In practice: electric rods and panel radiator plugs are almost always G (cylindrical), not R (conical).
What if I cannot identify the thread and do not want to make a mistake?
The easiest way: remove the original plug from the radiator hole (using a flat wrench, usually 1" or 1¼" wrench), photograph the thread at the end of the plug, and send the photo along with your question to us. Based on the photo and possibly the measured diameter, we will recommend the correct product. In most cases, the plug can also be purchased at a hardware store, where they can check the thread using a thread template.
Do I need to replace the gasket when replacing the plug with a rod?
Yes, always. The old gasket from the plug is compressed and deformed – after unscrewing the plug, throw it away and use a new gasket that comes with the rod packaging. If you reuse the old gasket, the risk of leakage is very high, as the rubber has lost its elasticity and does not properly fill the contact surface when installing the new rod.
Conclusion: thread is a small detail with big consequences
At first glance, selecting the diameter and thread of an electric rod may seem like a trivial matter – after all, it is just one number. In practice, however, this number determines whether the installation will take half an hour or whether you will end up running around hardware stores for reductions, gaskets, and replacements, or even with a damaged thread in the radiator. From our own experience, we know that every fourth customer who ordered the wrong product did so because they did not verify the thread – they just assumed that "standard is standard".
The correct procedure is simple: unscrew the old plug, measure the internal diameter of the hole or the external diameter of the plug thread, compare it with the table, and order a rod with a matching G 1¼" thread – which will be the correct solution in the vast majority of cases. If the measured value does not match the standard, solve it with a brass reducing adapter and the correct gasket. And always remember: the first two turns of the thread should always be done by hand without a wrench – this way you will immediately notice whether the threads engage properly or not.
