Checks You Can Handle Yourself – Without a Service Technician

A boiler owner isn't limited to just annual service visits. There are several simple checks that every eloBLOCK owner should perform regularly on their own – ideally according to set intervals. These checks don't require professional knowledge or special tools.

Checking Operating Pressure – Monthly

This is the most important routine check that every electric boiler owner should perform monthly. The Vaillant eloBLOCK displays the current system pressure directly on the display. Once a month, it's worth simply taking a look at the boiler. You're looking for:

  • Signs of water leaks – damp spots on the boiler, on the floor beneath the boiler, or on the pipes

Heating Water Quality – A Key But Underestimated Factor

This is an area where problems most commonly accumulate for customers. Limescale is a physical-chemical phenomenon: hard water contains dissolved calcium and magnesium salts, which precipitate on the surface of the heating element when heated. This effect is much more pronounced on an electric heating element than on the heat exchanger of a gas boiler, because the surface temperature of the heating element can locally reach 60–80 °C.

A limescale layer just 1 mm thick reduces thermal conductivity by about 10%, and a 3 mm layer can cause up to 25–30% loss in output and a significant increase in electricity consumption. It also causes the heating element itself to overheat, leading to premature failure.

Recommended heating water parameters for eloBLOCK boilers according to the VDI 2035 standard:

  • Total hardness: max. 3 °dH (ideally below 1 °dH for outputs over 50 kW – for smaller residential boilers, 3–8.5 °dH is acceptable)
  • pH: 7.5 – 9.0 (a slightly alkaline environment slows down corrosion)
  • Oxygen content: as low as possible (proper sealing of the system, without air ingress)

Checking and Servicing the Expansion Tank

The expansion tank is sometimes overlooked in an electric boiler, but it plays a key role in stabilizing the pressure of the entire system. It's a membrane tank – inside is a nitrogen pre-charged air chamber separated by a membrane from the water side. When water in the system heats up and expands, the excess volume of water enters the water side of the tank and compresses the membrane.

Over time, two problems can occur:

  • Membrane perforation – water penetrates into the air side; the tank stops performing its function, and system pressure begins to fluctuate irregularly
  • Nitrogen leakage – pre-charge pressure drops; the tank becomes "soft" and cannot absorb the thermal expansion of water

Checking the expansion tank's pre-charge pressure is done with a standard needle gauge via the Schrader valve (the same type as on a bicycle tire). With a cold system, the pre-charge pressure should correspond to the static height of the system: approximately 0.1 bar per meter of system height + a reserve of 0.2–0.3 bar. For a typical family house with a standard eloBLOCK boiler (e.g. Vaillant eloBLOCK VE 9 / 14 EU), the pre-charge pressure is typically 0.7–1.0 bar.

If the pre-charge pressure cannot be maintained (nitrogen leaks out immediately), the membrane is torn and the tank must be replaced. Replacing the expansion tank is a service task – the system must be drained, or at least the boiler must be isolated from the system.

Summer Break – What to Do With the Boiler Off-Season

  • Check the circulation pump after the summer break – a pump that has stood still all summer can get "stuck" due to oxide on the shaft; many boilers have an automatic pump-spin function every few days even outside the season
  • Don't operate the filling valve unnecessarily – unnecessary top-ups introduce new hard water into the system and speed up limescale formation
  • Perform an overall test before the heating season – start the boiler ahead of the first frosts, not only once the house has already cooled down

Electrical Safety – What the Technician Must Not Overlook

Unlike gas appliances, where the main hazard is a gas or CO leak, with an electric boiler the key safety risk is the condition of the electrical installation. An electric boiler with an output of 6–18 kW represents a high power draw. Typical Real-World Scenarios – What Actually Happens

Across dozens of service calls, similar patterns tend to repeat. Here are the most common situations we encounter:

Scenario 1 – The boiler works, but electricity bills are disproportionately high: A customer has a 5-year-old eloBLOCK VE 12, with the system filled with hard water (around Žilina ~18 °dH) without softening or an inhibitor. Upon opening the boiler, the technician finds the heating element covered with a 2–3 mm layer of limescale. Result: 20–25% higher electricity consumption than would be the case with a clean element. Solution: chemical descaling of the element or cartridge replacement, and improving water quality.

Scenario 2 – The boiler shuts down every 3 weeks due to low pressure: The customer manually tops up water and thinks this is normal operation. In reality, the expansion tank membrane is perforated. Scenario 3 – Some radiators are cold, others hot: Standard bleeding won't fix the problem. What filter do you recommend to protect the eloBLOCK boiler?

We recommend a magnetic sludge filter (e.g. Fernox TF1, Spirovent, Flamco Magdirty, or equivalent) installed on the return pipe before the boiler. A magnetic filter captures magnetite sludge (rusty oxide particles from steel radiators), which is common in systems but very harmful to the circulation pump and heating element.
