Detailed information

Product detailed description

Vaillant elbow 30°, Ø 110 mm

The 30° angled elbow represents the middle option in the range of angled shaft flue components Ø 110 mm – it addresses situations where a gentle 15° elbow is no longer sufficient, but a full 45° elbow would deflect the route more than necessary at that particular point.

Vaillant LAS Ø 110 mm shaft flue gas exhaust system

This component is part of the original Vaillant shaft flue gas exhaust system (abbreviated LAS – from the German "Luft-Abgas-System"), which is used with large-capacity condensing boilers (typically higher-output ecoTEC exclusiv/pro/plus series and floor-standing ecoCRAFT exclusiv boilers, as well as equivalent-output Protherm models from the same manufacturing group). Unlike a common concentric flue (pipe-in-pipe) used with small wall-mounted boilers, the shaft system routes flue gases through a single-wall pipe with a diameter of 110 mm inside an existing structural chimney shaft (most often an older, no-longer-used masonry chimney), while combustion air is drawn from the free space of the shaft around this pipe.

The advantage of this solution is that it requires no new penetration through the facade or roof in addition to the existing shaft, and in multi-storey buildings it allows the exhaust to be routed to the required height without the need to build a new chimney. All components of the system are made of durable polypropylene (PP), which withstands long-term contact with the mildly acidic condensate produced during condensing boiler operation, and they are joined by a simple socket-to-socket push-fit system with an integrated sealing ring, without the need for gluing or additional sealing compound.

The place of the 30° elbow in route design

When assembling a set of standardized components, the goal is to find a combination that most precisely matches the actual geometry of the shaft and the position of the boiler, while minimizing the overall flow resistance to flue gases and the number of joints. The 30° elbow is especially suitable for places where a minor obstruction needs to be bypassed (for example, a protruding corner of a masonry shaft) or where the route needs to be guided to a slightly offset outlet, without an unnecessarily sharp change of direction.

In practice, 30° elbows are often combined in pairs – one at the start of the deflection, the other to bring it back to the original direction – creating a smooth lateral offset of the route by several centimetres up to tens of centimetres, depending on the length of the straight section inserted between them.

Installation into the assembly

Like the other elbows in the range, this one can also be rotated around the longitudinal axis of the pipe before insertion and aimed exactly as needed. The push-fit connection with an integrated sealing ring does not require additional sealing compound, however we recommend lightly greasing the seal with a suitable lubricant for plastic systems before installation.

Step-by-step installation procedure

  1. Assess in the route design the point where a medium-strength deflection is needed (for example, bypassing a corner of a masonry shaft).
  2. Before insertion, rotate the elbow around the pipe axis to the required direction of deflection.
  3. Grease the sealing ring with a suitable lubricant and push the elbow fully into the adjacent component.
  4. When combining two 30° elbows to create a lateral offset, insert a straight section of the appropriate length between them, according to the required offset.
  5. Verify the final orientation and continue by connecting the remaining components of the assembly.

Practical example

When routing a flue through a masonry shaft that had a slightly protruding corner of the original masonry structure at mid-height, the route was solved with a pair of 30° elbows with a short straight section between them – the first elbow laterally deflected the route around the obstruction, and the second returned it to the original direction. This solution allowed the obstruction to be bypassed without having to use a larger, flow-wise less favourable angle at a single point.

How to choose between a 15°, 30° and 45° elbow

The 30° elbow is chosen when the required deflection of the route is noticeably greater than what the gentlest 15° elbow can achieve, but a full deflection provided by the 45° elbow is not needed. In practice, this often involves bypassing a minor obstruction with a lateral offset in the range of a few to several tens of centimetres. If you are not sure of the exact required angle, we recommend measuring the actual deflection on site before ordering (for example, using a set square or laser level) and comparing it with the values of 15°, 30° and 45° – choosing too small an angle would not solve the route, while choosing too large an angle would deflect it more than necessary.

When ordering several elbows at once (for example when combining two 30° elbows to create a lateral offset), we recommend rounding the quantity up by one extra piece as a reserve – a plastic elbow can be damaged by careless handling (the socket cracking during forceful insertion), and having a spare piece on hand will save time if an additional purchase becomes necessary during ongoing installation.

When combining two 30° elbows to create a smooth lateral offset of the route, also keep in mind that the distance between the two elbows (the length of the inserted straight section) directly determines the size of the achieved offset – the longer the straight section inserted between them, the greater the lateral offset of the route achieved while keeping the same angle on both elbows. We recommend taking this relationship into account already during the initial route design, so that you order a straight section of the appropriate length together with the elbows themselves.

When to reach for a 30° elbow

  • bypassing a minor obstruction in the cross-section of the shaft (a corner, a protrusion of masonry),
  • creating a smooth lateral offset of the route by combining two 30° elbows,
  • connecting to an original structural penetration that is not exactly coaxial with the new flue route.

Compatibility and use within the system

This component belongs to the closed range of original Vaillant accessories for shaft flue gas exhaust Ø 110 mm and is intended for combination with other components of the same range – extensions (0.5 m, 1.0 m and 2.0 m), elbows of various angles, inspection pieces, a support elbow, spacer brackets, mounting clamps and a wall rosette. It is used primarily during installation or replacement of large-capacity condensing boilers by Vaillant (ecoTEC exclusiv series, higher-output versions of ecoTEC pro/plus, and floor-standing ecoCRAFT exclusiv boilers), as well as corresponding Protherm models (Panther Condens, Tiger Condens, Bizon Condens in higher outputs) – Vaillant and Protherm belong to the same manufacturing group, so parts of the exhaust system are commonly identical, however always verify the exact type and size of the connection in the installation manual for your specific boiler.

Before ordering, we recommend having our customer service or an installation company prepare a simple design of the assembly based on the height and diameter of your existing shaft – the correct number and combination of components (length of straight sections, number and angle of elbows, number of spacer brackets and mounting clamps) is key to the safe and code-compliant operation of the entire exhaust system.

Shaft flue gas exhaust systems of this type are designed and assessed in both Slovakia and the Czech Republic according to the standards of the STN EN 1443 series (Chimneys – General requirements) and STN EN 14471 (Chimneys – System chimneys with plastic flue liners), which, among other things, define the designation of the so-called temperature, pressure and resistance class of components (for example, condensate resistance class "W" – wet operation, typical precisely for condensing boilers). Original Vaillant components of this range comply with the relevant classes stated in the manufacturing documentation and installation manual of the specific boiler with which the system is supplied – this compliance is precisely the reason why it is recommended to use only components from a single closed range for shaft flue systems, instead of combining them with products from other manufacturers.

Comparison with 15° and 45° elbows

The 30° elbow is the middle choice between the gentle 15° and the more pronounced 45° elbow. It is used mainly where a minor obstruction needs to be bypassed or where a smooth lateral offset needs to be created by combining two pieces – in both cases it offers a better compromise between the size of the deflection and maintaining favourable flue gas flow than a one-time use of a larger angle where it is not necessary.

Maintenance and service inspections

The polypropylene shaft flue gas exhaust system is low-maintenance, but as part of the flue gas path it is, like a masonry chimney, subject to regular inspection by a chimney sweep according to applicable regulations and intervals set by the boiler manufacturer and local chimney inspection ordinances. During inspection, the tightness of joints, the patency of the pipe (deposits, possible foreign objects), the condition of the sealing rings in the push-fit joints, and the functionality of the condensate drainage from the lower part of the system are checked in particular. Components made of PP are not normally cleaned with aggressive solvents – mechanical removal of deposits and rinsing with water, or with a mild detergent, is sufficient.

The condensate produced during operation of a condensing boiler is mildly acidic (typically in the range of pH approximately 3 to 5, depending on the type of gas being burned and the operating state of the boiler), therefore the entire route of the system is designed with a slope towards the collection point and condensate drainage either directly into the boiler (where it is usually neutralized or discharged into the sewer via a trap), or into a separate collection point at the base of the shaft. During regular inspection, therefore, also pay attention to whether the condensate actually flows away freely and does not remain standing at lower points of the route, which could indicate an incorrect slope or a blockage in some section.

Safety notes

This is a common, non-load-bearing component – during installation, ensure correct insertion and orientation; anchoring to the wall is handled exclusively by the separate support elbow with a mounting bracket.

Why it is useful to have the full range of angles available

Real shafts and boiler room layouts vary greatly, and it is precisely the availability of multiple angles (15°, 30°, 45°, 87°) that allows an assembly to be put together that best replicates the actual on-site conditions, instead of settling for compromises with a single universal angle.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a 30° and a 45° elbow?

A 30° elbow deflects the route more gently than a 45° elbow, making it suitable for situations where a 45° elbow would cause an unnecessarily large deflection, while a 15° elbow would not be sufficient.

Can two 30° elbows be combined to create a lateral offset?

Yes, a pair of 30° elbows with a short straight section between them can create a smooth parallel offset of the route without permanently changing its overall direction.

Does the 30° elbow need additional sealing?

No, the integrated rubber sealing ring in the push-fit joint ensures sufficient tightness without the need for sealing compound.

Does the elbow withstand the same temperatures as the straight sections?

Yes, all components of the Ø 110 mm range are made of the same material and have the same operating parameters.

Can the 30° elbow also be used in the horizontal section of the route near the boiler?

Yes, the elbow can be universally used in any part of the route, both vertical and horizontal, as required by the specific design.

Do I need an additional spacer bracket with the 30° elbow?

A spacer bracket is not usually fitted directly on the elbow; what matters is the overall spacing of brackets on the adjacent straight sections according to the boiler's installation manual.

Can a 30° elbow be used instead of two 15° elbows?

Yes, a single 30° elbow replaces the effect of two 15° elbows with fewer joints; suitability depends on the specific geometry of the route.

Is the 30° elbow suitable for both vertical and horizontal parts of the route?

Yes, it can be universally used in any orientation as required by the specific design.

Do I need to adjust the spacing of spacer brackets when using a 30° elbow?

What matters is the overall spacing on the adjacent straight sections according to the boiler's installation manual; the elbow itself does not require special spacing.

What is the outer diameter of the socket of the 30° elbow?

It corresponds to the uniform dimension of Ø 110 mm for the entire range, so it is fully compatible with all other components of the assembly.

Do I need to account for a greater overall length of the assembly when using two 30° elbows?

Yes, the short straight section between the two elbows will slightly extend the overall length of the route, which should be taken into account when calculating the required components.

Can the 30° elbow also be combined with an inspection piece with an opening?

Yes, both components belong to the same Ø 110 mm range and can be freely combined in the assembly as required by the route design.
