Elbow 30° Ø 160 mm – fine route correction through a roof or ceiling structure

The 30° elbow is one of the "fine" fittings intended for small corrections of route direction where a sharp deflection is neither needed nor desirable, but only a slight adjustment of the pipe trajectory is required – typically when passing through a sloped roof plane, when bypassing a smaller structural obstacle, or when finely adjusting the outlet angle of a riser so that it precisely reaches the planned passage through the ceiling or roof.

Thanks to its small deflection angle, this type of elbow, among the entire range (87°/45°/30°/15°), offers the second-lowest resistance to flue gas flow – which is advantageous for longer cascade flue routes, where the sum of resistances of individual fittings translates into overall demands on the draft of the extraction system.

Extraction systems for Vaillant cascade boiler rooms

When a single condensing boiler is not enough to cover the heat demand of a building – an apartment building, hotel, operational hall, office building, or a larger technological boiler room – this is usually solved not by one large boiler, but by a cascade of several smaller or medium-output Vaillant condensing boilers connected in parallel. The advantage of a cascade solution is higher operational reliability (the failure of one boiler does not mean a heating outage for the entire building), better output regulation according to current demand (the number of running boilers and the output of each can be modulated), and easier future expandability of the boiler room with another boiler if heat consumption increases.

Each boiler in the cascade has its own flue gas outlet and combustion air intake, but for practical, economic, and constructional reasons, the flue gases of all boilers are usually led out through one common collecting flue (collector) into a single chimney or through a single roof/facade passage. This is exactly the purpose of the range of components described below – these are parts of a separate (non-concentric) flue gas extraction system with a diameter of 160 mm or 200 mm, which connects to the outlets of individual boilers and joins them into one common pipe.

The system is modular – it consists of basic connection sets (for the first two boilers of the cascade, including the necessary fitting for condensate drainage), extension sets (for each additional boiler added to the cascade), individual elbows of various angles for bypassing obstacles and changing route direction, extensions of various lengths to bridge the distance between the boilers and the riser, and finally a set for connecting the whole assembly to a masonry chimney shaft.

Typical placement in the assembly

The 30° elbow Ø 160 mm is used mainly when passing through a sloped structure (e.g. a gable roof), where the pipe needs to be slightly tilted so that the passage through the roof plane comes out perpendicular to the roof surface, or for fine adjustment of route direction in the confined spaces of a boiler room, where a sharper 45° or 87° elbow would mean an unnecessarily large change of direction.

Material and construction – why polypropylene (PP)

All parts of this range are made of polypropylene (PP) – a plastic used in condensing boiler extraction systems precisely because it perfectly withstands the chemically aggressive condensate that naturally arises during the operation of condensing technology. Compared to a classic (non-condensing) boiler, a condensing boiler also utilizes the latent heat contained in the water vapor of the flue gases – this vapor cools below the dew point in the flue gas heat exchanger and condenses, and the resulting condensate is slightly acidic (pH approximately 3–5, depending on the type of fuel and operating conditions). Metal (e.g. stainless steel) flues can also withstand this load, but plastic PP systems are lighter to handle, faster to install thanks to joints with sealing rings without the need for welding or special tools, and, at comparable quality, are usually also more cost-effective.

The operating temperature of flue gases in condensing boilers is relatively low (roughly up to about 80–120 °C depending on the operating mode and boiler output) – this is precisely why the use of plastic PP pipes instead of a classic metal flue (common, for example, in older atmospheric or low-temperature boilers) is not only possible, but also more suitable in terms of resistance to condensate. The system is certified and dimensioned by the manufacturer directly for cooperation with Vaillant condensing boilers of the corresponding output range and outlet type designation.

The joints of individual parts are made with a socket connection with a rubber sealing ring (so-called socket joint) – this design allows for simple, tight, yet detachable installation without gluing or welding, which greatly simplifies any future route modifications, replacement of a damaged part, or expansion of the cascade with another boiler.

Practical example

When passing a vertical riser of a cascade flue through a sloped roof structure, it is often necessary to slightly deflect the pipe so that the resulting roof passage comes out exactly perpendicular to the roof plane (and not perpendicular to the room floor) – a 30° elbow is used for this purpose, gently directing the route without an unnecessarily large change of direction and without a significant increase in flow resistance compared to a straight section.

Comparison of elbow angles within the Ø 160 mm range

The 30° elbow fits into the range of fittings between the slight 15° elbow and the more pronounced 45° elbow – it is therefore a middle choice for situations where a more noticeable, yet still relatively fine, correction of route direction is needed. In practice, the 30° angle is often chosen precisely for passages through sloped structures (e.g. a gable roof with a slope close to 30°), where it exactly matches the common slope of the roof plane.

Assembly and installation

The installation of a flue gas extraction system for gas appliances (including cascade boiler rooms) in Slovakia is subject to the requirements of the standards STN EN 1443 (Chimneys), STN 73 4201 (Chimneys and flues) and related gas industry technical rules (TPP), and must be carried out by an authorized and professionally qualified person – an authorized service technician or installation company with the appropriate authorization to install gas appliances and their extraction systems. Part of commissioning the boiler room is also an inspection of the chimney/flue carried out by a chimney-sweeping company and the issuance of the relevant inspection report.

When designing a cascade flue route, it is necessary to take into account in particular: the total nominal heat output of all boilers in the cascade (this determines the required diameter of the collecting pipe – 160 mm or 200 mm), the maximum permissible route length and number of elbows (the manufacturer provides equivalent lengths for individual fittings), the slope of horizontal sections back toward the boiler or condensate separator (generally at least 3° so that the condensate can drain by gravity and does not remain standing in the pipe), sufficient securing of the pipe with spacer holders at regular intervals (typically every 1–1.5 m) to prevent sagging or excessive stress on the socket joints, and maintaining access to inspection openings and inspection elbows for regular cleaning and inspection of clear passage.

When cascading several boilers into one collecting pipe, it is also necessary to respect the order and direction of connection of individual branches according to the manufacturer's installation instructions (including the recommended use of check valves for cascades with three or more boilers, so that when one boiler is shut down, flue gases from running boilers do not flow back into the shut-down unit) and to maintain the prescribed minimum rise and direction toward the common chimney or facade/roof outlet.

Care of the elbow during operation

As with the 45° elbow, the 30° elbow also has no inspection opening of its own, and its condition is checked indirectly, via the nearest inspection point in the route. Thanks to its gentle deflection angle, this elbow is one of the most trouble-free parts of the entire assembly in terms of maintenance – low flow resistance also means a low probability of dirt settling directly at the bend.

Storage and handling before installation

Although this is a relatively compact part, when storing the 30° elbow before installation we recommend following the principles applicable to all PP fittings of this range – keep it in a dry environment without direct sunlight (long-term UV radiation can affect the properties of the plastic surface over time) and protect the sealing ring in the socket from mechanical damage until installation. Upon receipt of the goods, we recommend visually checking that the sealing ring has not been pulled out of the groove or otherwise damaged, and in case of doubt, contact our customer service before installing the part into the assembly.

Service, cleaning, and lifespan

Regular inspection and cleaning of the extraction system is part of the standard annual service inspection of a condensing boiler room. Thanks to the inspection openings and inspection elbows in the assembly, individual sections of the pipe can be checked and, if necessary, cleaned (e.g. of any deposits) without the need to completely dismantle the entire route. The condensate separator, if part of the assembly, must be regularly checked and, if necessary, emptied/flushed to prevent clogging and backflow of condensate into the pipe.

The lifespan of a quality PP extraction system from a manufacturer directly compatible with the given boiler range, with proper installation and regular servicing, is comparable to the lifespan of the boiler itself – i.e. roughly 15 or more years of operation. When replacing or adding individual parts in the future (for example, when expanding the cascade with another boiler), it is advisable to use original components of the same manufacturer and diameter to maintain full joint compatibility and the validity of the warranty on the entire extraction system.
