Detailed information

Product detailed description

Inspection elbow 87° Ø 200 mm is an original part of the Vaillant DN 200 PP flue system that combines an 87° change of flue pipe direction with an integrated inspection/cleaning opening in a single component. It is designed exactly for those points on the route where a change of direction (for example a transition from a vertical to a horizontal section) and access for inspection and cleaning are both required at the same time.

The Vaillant DN 200 PP flue system is an original modular system for discharging combustion gases from high-capacity condensing boilers of the ecoCRAFT exclusiv series (and, in some projects, also from cascade assemblies of several Vaillant condensing boilers connected to a common flue gas manifold). It is a single-wall plastic pipe made of durable polypropylene (PP), which - given the low flue gas temperature typical of condensing technology (usually up to approx. 80 °C) - is a fully adequate and more cost-effective alternative to stainless steel flue pipes used with older atmospheric or low-efficiency heat sources. An angle of 87° is the most commonly used direction change at the transition between a vertical and horizontal section - in practice this is an almost right-angled elbow, whose slight deviation from exactly 90° improves flue gas flow and reduces pressure losses compared to a sharp right angle.

Technical characteristics

  • Direction change angle - 87°, most commonly used at the transition from a vertical to a horizontal section
  • Material - polypropylene (PP), resistant to flue gas condensate
  • Nominal diameter - DN 200, for the ecoCRAFT exclusiv system
  • Inspection access - integrated cleaning/inspection opening with a tight cover directly in the elbow
  • Manufacturer order number - 0020095555
  • Joint type - socket connection with a sealing ring, compatible with other DN 200 PP components
  • Recommended placement - base of the vertical section, transition to the horizontal section leading to the common manifold

Installation and use in the flue route

The 87° inspection elbow is most often placed exactly where the vertical section of the flue pipe transitions into the horizontal section leading to the boiler or to the common flue gas manifold in a cascade assembly - i.e. exactly where, due to the change of direction and gravity, condensate and possible deposits most often accumulate. It is installed using a socket connection with a sealing ring in the same way as other system components, and the inspection opening must remain freely accessible for future inspections after installation. The exact placement and orientation of the elbow (so that the inspection opening is accessible from the side where the inspection will be carried out) is determined by the flue gas route design and carried out by a qualified installation company.

Compatibility and system placement

The elbow is fully compatible with the other DN 200 PP system components listed in the overview table below. If you only need a change of direction at a given point on the route without inspection access (for example because inspection access is already provided elsewhere on the route), you can use a simple 87° elbow without inspection instead, which is more cost-effective. Conversely, if you only need inspection access without a change of direction, choose a straight piece with an inspection opening. Like all other DN 200 PP components, this elbow is not interchangeable with components of other diameters of Vaillant flue systems (for example DN 110/160 mm or DN 130 mm) - always check the exact diameter used by your specific boiler or cascade assembly before ordering.

Where to place inspection elements on the route - practical recommendations

Proper placement of inspection/cleaning access points along the length of the flue gas route is one of the key tasks for both the designer and the installation company. As a general rule, inspection access should be available at every point where deposits or condensate may accumulate due to a change of direction, length of the route or other circumstances, and at the same time where regular visual inspection of the pipe condition is required for safety and operational reasons.

The 87° inspection elbow at the base of the vertical section is typically the first and most important inspection point - it is exactly here that condensate and any deposits flowing down from the entire height of the vertical section accumulate due to gravity. For longer routes or cascade assemblies, it is recommended to add further inspection access points (for example straight inspection pieces) at regular intervals along the length of the horizontal section towards the common manifold or the boiler.

When designing the placement of inspection elements, future physical access for inspection must also be considered - the inspection opening should not be covered by a building structure, shaft cladding, or otherwise hard to reach, since difficult access increases the risk that inspections will be carried out less thoroughly or postponed. Investing in well thought-out placement of inspection elements already at the design stage therefore pays off in the long run.

In cascade boiler rooms, where several ecoCRAFT exclusiv boilers are connected to a common horizontal flue gas manifold, it is advisable to place a separate inspection elbow at the beginning of each connection branch - this allows any problem to be precisely located on a specific boiler during inspection without having to inspect the entire common route at once. This approach significantly reduces the time needed for servicing a larger boiler room and also simplifies troubleshooting.

When choosing between an inspection elbow and a combination of a separate elbow and a straight inspection piece, the available space on the route is usually the deciding factor - if space is limited (for example in a narrow brick shaft), one combined component such as this inspection elbow saves space and reduces the number of joints compared to two separate components placed in sequence.

Maintenance, servicing and inspection

Given its typical placement at the base of the vertical section, this elbow is one of the most important inspection points on the entire flue gas route - it is exactly here that condensate and any deposits flowing down from the vertical section accumulate the most. During the annual inspection by a qualified person, the inspection cover is opened, the patency of the elbow and the amount of accumulated condensate are checked, and cleaning is carried out if necessary. The sealing ring of the cover must be replaced if signs of wear are found, in order to maintain the tightness of the entire flue gas route. We also recommend checking at every inspection that condensate drainage from the lowest point of the route is working correctly and that condensate does not repeatedly freeze or accumulate beyond the normal amount, which could indicate a blocked condensate drain elsewhere in the system.

Why choose an original Vaillant part

Combining a change of direction and inspection access in a single component saves space on the route and reduces the number of joints compared to a solution with a separate elbow and a separate straight inspection piece - fewer joints mean a lower risk of leaks. The original Vaillant part has precisely defined angle, diameter and sealing quality corresponding to the certification of the entire ecoCRAFT exclusiv system, which is especially important at a point where the route is repeatedly opened for inspections.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions - Vaillant Inspection elbow 87°, Ø 200 mm

Why is the elbow angle 87° and not exactly 90°?

A slight deviation from a right angle (87° instead of 90°) improves flue gas flow at the point of direction change and reduces pressure losses compared to an exactly right-angled elbow, which is common design practice for condensing technology flue systems.

Can I use a plain 87° elbow without inspection instead of the inspection elbow?

Yes, if inspection/cleaning access is already provided elsewhere on that section of the route by another component (for example a nearby straight inspection piece), you can use the more cost-effective 87° elbow without inspection.

Is inspection access required at every elbow on the route?

No, inspection access is required at key points determined by the flue gas route design (typically at the base of the vertical section), not necessarily at every single change of direction.

How does the 87° inspection elbow differ from the 90° inspection elbow in other sellers' catalogues?

It is the same original Vaillant part with order number 0020095555 - in some catalogues (especially German ones) it is labelled as 'Bogen 90 Grad' due to simplified angle rounding, but technically it is the same 87° component.

Can combustion efficiency also be measured through this elbow's inspection opening?

Yes, inspection/cleaning openings are commonly used in practice as a point for measuring flue gas parameters during regular boiler servicing.

Must the inspection elbow be placed right next to the boiler?

Not necessarily - it is most often placed at the base of the vertical section or at an easily accessible point according to the design, to ensure convenient and safe inspection without the need for complex work at heights.

Is this component also suitable for cascade connection of several boilers?

Yes, in cascade assemblies the inspection elbow is commonly used at the transition from an individual boiler's branch into the common horizontal flue gas manifold.

What is the price difference between the inspection elbow and a plain 87° elbow without inspection?

The inspection elbow is more expensive due to the additional construction of the inspection opening with a tight cover - the price difference is worthwhile wherever the flue gas route design requires inspection access at that point.

Can an inspection elbow be added later to an already completed route?

Yes, if the route is accessible and can be partially dismantled, an existing elbow without inspection can be replaced with an inspection elbow - we recommend entrusting this to a qualified installation company.

How can I tell that the inspection elbow is installed in the correct orientation?

After installation, the inspection opening with the cover must face the side from which future inspection access will be carried out (usually towards the free space of the boiler room or the shaft's inspection door) - the correct orientation is always determined by the installation company according to the specific layout of the space.

Is the elbow material also resistant to lower temperatures when the route runs outdoors?

The polypropylene used in the DN 200 PP system is resistant to the usual range of outdoor temperatures occurring in Slovakia throughout the year, including frost, which is important for routes running partially or entirely along the outside facade of a building.
