Detailed information

Product detailed description

Duct coupling 75/62 mm (Vaillant recoVAIR, code 0020176831)

The 75/62 mm duct coupling is a genuine accessory part of the Vaillant recoVAIR duct system, used to directly extend or connect two sections of flexible round air hose with a diameter of 75/62 mm into one continuous run. While an elbow or adapter changes the direction or type of connection, the coupling maintains a straight duct line and is used exclusively for extending a run or repairing a damaged section of hose without having to replace the entire length. It is a simple yet, in practice, indispensable part found in almost every larger installation of controlled ventilation with heat recovery, since the standard hose package length (40 m per coil, code 0020180824) is only rarely used up exactly without leftover material, or conversely sometimes is not enough for one continuous section.

Overview of main parameters

Nominal diameter 75/62 mm (outer/inner), two identical spigots on both ends, two sealing rings included in the package, made of durable plastic resistant to temperatures common in attics and installation shafts, no bayonet system used (the coupling is a simple push-fit type, unlike some other parts in the range with quick-connect fittings), intended exclusively for straight, not angled, joints. These parameters make the coupling a versatile and inexpensive, yet functionally irreplaceable component that should be part of the equipment of every company working with the recoVAIR system.

Design and technical execution

The coupling has the shape of a short cylindrical body with two identical spigots on both ends, onto which the 75/62 mm flexible hose is pushed from both sides. The package includes two sealing rings (one on each side), which, once the hose is pushed on, ensure the airtightness of both joints. The inner diameter of the spigot exactly matches the 75 mm outer diameter of the hose so that the connection is tight without the need for any additional sealing or gluing. The material is durable plastic with a smooth inner surface, which, unlike overlapping the two hose ends without a coupling (which is sometimes improvised incorrectly in practice by folding over and taping), does not leave any protrusion or obstruction to airflow inside the duct.

When the coupling is used

  • Extending a run beyond the length of one hose coil – if the length of a particular duct branch exceeds the remaining length of hose on the coil, or conversely, if one coil is divided between several shorter branches, the coupling allows two separate sections to be joined into one continuous, airtight run.
  • Repairing a damaged section – in the event of mechanical damage to the hose (for example, punctured during construction work after installation, or gnawed by rodents in insufficiently protected attic spaces), the damaged section can be cut out and both ends rejoined using the coupling, without having to replace the entire length of hose on that branch.
  • Connecting different sections of the duct during phased installation – when the installation is carried out in stages (for example, rough installation before roof insulation and finishing works after insulation), it can be practical to route the main run in advance and add and connect the individual branches to the outlets later.

Installation

Installing the coupling is simple and requires no special tools – both ends of the hose are pushed onto the respective spigots of the coupling up to the retaining lip and secured with a cable tie or clamp. Before installation, we recommend checking that both sealing rings are correctly seated in their grooves and have not been pushed out or damaged during transport or storage. After pushing the hose onto both sides, it is advisable to gently pull to verify that the joint holds firmly and the hose cannot be pulled out of the spigot without significant force – this is a sign of correctly performed installation.

Compatibility

Coupling 0020176831 is compatible with all parts in the 75/62 mm range from the Vaillant recoVAIR product line, including flexible hose in 40 m packages, adapters for connecting to the manifold, 90° elbows, and end pieces for connecting to DN 125 outlets. It is not compatible with the larger diameter EPP ductwork (210/180 mm or 180/150 mm) used on the main runs between the recoVAIR unit and the roof or facade sleeve – a separate range of connecting parts with the appropriate larger dimensions exists for these.

Why use the genuine coupling instead of an improvised solution

In practice, we sometimes encounter attempts to join two hose sections without a genuine coupling – for example, by overlapping the ends and wrapping them with adhesive tape. Such a solution has several fundamental disadvantages compared to using a genuine coupling with sealing rings:

  • Adhesive tape loses its adhesion over time due to temperature fluctuations in the attic, which can lead to a leaking joint and air escaping outside the designed route after several years of operation,
  • Overlapping two hose ends without a coupling creates a stepped transition inside the duct, which increases resistance to airflow and can become a place where dust accumulates,
  • An improvised joint does not guarantee the same mechanical strength as a genuine coupling, which is risky especially under tensile stress on the hose during installation or when it is later moved during servicing,
  • The use of non-genuine connecting solutions may be grounds for the manufacturer to reject warranty claims for the entire ventilation system in the event of a complaint.

Effect of joint airtightness on heat recovery efficiency

As with other connecting elements of the system, the airtightness of each individual joint directly affects the overall energy efficiency of heat recovery. Vaillant recoVAIR units achieve high heat recovery efficiency (typically 80–90% depending on the model), but this value applies to the air passing through the unit's heat exchanger – any air leakage along the route between the unit and the room (for example, through a leaking coupling) means that exactly the designed amount of air does not reach the room, and at the same time, the energy spent on conditioning it (heating or cooling) is partially lost into the surrounding structure instead of the occupied space. With multiple leaking joints on one branch, this effect accumulates and can significantly reduce the actual comfort and savings that heat recovery brings.

Recommendations for design and installation

When designing the ductwork, we recommend minimizing the number of couplings on one branch by matching the length of individual hose sections as closely as possible to the actual route length directly when ordering material, or by appropriately distributing hose coils among individual branches so that as little offcut as possible remains. Where a coupling is necessary, we recommend placing it in an easily accessible location (for example, near a ceiling access hatch) so that it can be inspected or the seal replaced if necessary, without having to dismantle a larger part of the structure.

Material and service life

The coupling body is made of the same durable plastic as other fittings in the 75/62 mm range, resistant to the normal temperature range in the concealed installation spaces of a house. The sealing rings are made of flexible elastomer, which retains its properties over the long term, although, as with other rubber seals, we recommend occasional inspection during regular maintenance of the recoVAIR unit. Under normal operation in a concealed, climatically stable environment, the service life of the coupling is comparable to that of the entire ventilation duct system.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I use the coupling to join two different pieces of hose from different manufacturers?

The coupling is designed precisely for the dimensions of Vaillant 75/62 mm hose. With hose from another manufacturer with a different outer diameter tolerance, the same joint tightness and mechanical strength cannot be guaranteed, so we recommend using exclusively genuine Vaillant hose from the 75/62 mm diameter series.

Does the coupling need to be additionally sealed with silicone or adhesive tape?

No, with correct installation and undamaged sealing rings, the joint is fully airtight without any additional sealing. Additional gluing would, on the contrary, make future disassembly for servicing or duct modification more difficult.

How many couplings are needed for a typical installation in a family house?

The exact number depends on the length of the individual branches and how efficiently the available material from the hose coils can be divided. For a typical installation, a few pieces are usually sufficient as a reserve, since the main purpose of the coupling is to extend a run beyond the length of one coil or to make a repair, not to be a standard part of every branch.

Can the coupling also be used to repair a burst hose without replacing it entirely?

Yes, that is exactly what the coupling is designed for. The damaged section is cut out, both intact ends of the hose are trimmed to the required length, and joined together using the coupling with sealing rings – this way you avoid replacing the entire length of hose on that branch.

Does the coupling affect airflow in the branch?

Since the coupling maintains the same inner diameter as the hose itself without changing direction, its effect on pressure loss in the branch is minimal compared to elbows or adapters that change the flow direction. With correct installation and a smooth transition between the hose and the coupling spigot, the effect on the overall performance of the duct system is negligible.

Manufacturing precision and quality control

Since the coupling must simultaneously meet two conflicting requirements – a sufficiently tight fit for the hose so that the joint withstands mechanical stress during installation, yet not too tight so that the hose can be pushed on without excessive force or the risk of damaging the corrugated wall – the manufacturer pays great attention to the precision of the spigot's inner diameter as well as the thickness and hardness of the sealing ring. This precision is one of the main reasons why it is not recommended to combine genuine Vaillant parts with hose or fittings from other manufacturers – even a small deviation in diameter tolerance (on the order of tenths of a millimeter) can result in either too loose a joint with a risk of leakage, or conversely too tight a joint, which makes installation difficult and can damage the sealing ring on the very first push-fit.

Difference between centralized and decentralized heat recovery solutions

The Vaillant recoVAIR system offers both a centralized solution, where one ventilation unit (for example recoVAIR VAR 260 or VAR 360) supplies air to the entire house via a network of ducts with manifolds and this 75/62 mm ductwork range, and decentralized units (for example recoVAIR VAR 60), which are installed locally in individual rooms without the need for extensive ductwork. Coupling 0020176831 is used precisely in centralized solutions, where the ductwork is more extensive and the likelihood of needing to extend or repair a branch is higher. With decentralized units, on the other hand, this type of part is almost never used, since there it is usually only a short connection between the unit and the facade grille.

Packaging and logistics for larger installations

The coupling is supplied individually, which allows installation companies to order exactly as many pieces as actually follow from the project documentation and the estimated need for a repair reserve. For larger installations with tens of metres of ductwork, we always recommend ordering a few extra pieces as a reserve, since an additional order of one or two pieces due to an unexpected need during installation can cause delays in the work schedule, especially if the product is temporarily out of stock.

Who this product is intended for

Coupling 0020176831 is part of the basic equipment of every installation company carrying out controlled ventilation with heat recovery ductwork for Vaillant recoVAIR, as well as part of the range used by service organizations that deal with repairs or modifications to the duct route during the system's service life. It is also suitable for more experienced property owners who need to extend or repair an existing duct system themselves or in cooperation with a technician, without interfering with other parts of the system.

Storage before installation

We recommend storing the coupling, like other plastic fittings and seals from the Vaillant recoVAIR range, in a dry and temperature-controlled environment away from direct sunlight until installation. Long-term storage of sealing rings at high temperatures or in direct sunlight can accelerate the aging of the elastomer even before commissioning, so when ordering larger quantities of material for stock, we recommend planning consumption over a horizon of months, not years, to maintain the full functionality of the seal during installation.

Relation to the guaranteed functionality of the entire recoVAIR assembly

Vaillant, as the manufacturer, provides a warranty on the recoVAIR unit and its accessories provided that the entire assembly is installed in accordance with the installation manual and using genuine or manufacturer-approved parts. The use of a non-genuine coupling or an improvised method of connecting the hose may, in the event of a warranty claim, be grounds for the manufacturer to question the warranty terms, since the same tightness and mechanical reliability as with a genuine part cannot be guaranteed. For this reason, we recommend using exclusively genuine Vaillant parts on all joints of the ductwork, including seemingly less important ones such as this straight coupling.

Summary and package contents

The package contains one straight coupling for 75/62 mm ductwork, including two sealing rings (on both ends). It is a genuine accessory part directly from the manufacturer Vaillant, intended for extending a run or repairing flexible air hose in recoVAIR system ductwork. When ordering, we also recommend considering a reasonable reserve of a few extra pieces for future modifications or repairs to the ductwork, since it is an inexpensive yet functionally key part of the system, the potential lack of which in stock could unnecessarily delay the completion of installation on site.
