Product detailed description

Vaillant roof flashing for pitched roofs, red – original flue pipe passage for roofs with terracotta and red roofing

Code 8000039665 denotes the red variant of the Vaillant roof flashing, designed for a watertight and airtight passage of a condensing boiler flue pipe through a pitched roof. It works on the same functional principle as the black version, differing only in the colour of the collar – the red colour (usually in a shade close to RAL 3009 or the terracotta range) is designed to visually blend in with the most common type of roof covering in Slovakia: fired or concrete tiles in a natural red, brick or terracotta shade, which still covers the vast majority of family houses built in recent decades.

This item does not have an image in the manufacturer's price list, which is common for some less frequently used colour variants of roof accessories – however, it is a fully-fledged, series-produced original Vaillant part, not a marginal or discontinued product.

Why the colour of the flashing is not just an aesthetic detail

When a technical installation passes through a visible part of the roof, colour matching between the new element and the existing roofing is more important than it might seem at first glance. A contrasting black flashing on a red tiled roof creates a noticeable dark spot that is clearly visible from the street and from surrounding properties, and many homeowners perceive it as an aesthetic flaw after installation – especially when the flue outlet is located on a roof facing the street or neighbouring properties. This is exactly why Vaillant offers roof flashings in several colour variants, and choosing the right colour should be part of the project preparation, not an afterthought following installation.

Technical parameters and construction

Structurally, the red flashing is identical to the other colour variants in the range – it consists of a flexible, shapeable collar made of a material resistant to UV radiation, frost, temperature fluctuations and long-term exposure to moisture, and a rigid mounting frame for anchoring into the roof battens or sheathing. The inner diameter is designed for concentric flue pipes with an outer diameter of 125 mm, used with most Vaillant turbo condensing boilers (ecoTEC, ecoTEC plus, ecoTEC exclusiv, turboTEC series and follow-on models). The roof pitch range for which the flashing is intended is approximately 25° to 50°, which covers the vast majority of pitched roofs on family houses in Slovakia.

The integrated sealing collar ensures an airtight and watertight connection between the outer casing of the flue pipe and the roof collar, eliminating the risk of water ingress into the roof truss structure at the passage point – one of the most critical details of the entire roof structure in terms of long-term watertightness.

Typical usage situations

  • Family houses with fired or concrete tiles in a classic red, brick or terracotta shade – the most common use of this colour variant,
  • Renovations of older houses, where the original solid fuel boiler or an older gas boiler with an open combustion chamber is being replaced with a condensing boiler with forced flue gas discharge through the roof,
  • New-build houses with traditional architecture, where the investor deliberately chooses a classic tiled roof in a warm red shade instead of modern dark roofing,
  • Cases where several passages are combined on one roof (e.g. sewer ventilation, chimney, flue pipe), where colour matching of all elements makes the roof look neater and less disruptive.

Installation procedure and principles

Installation of this flashing should be carried out as part of the overall flue pipe installation by a qualified heating or sheet metal company. The basic steps include precisely cutting an opening in the roofing and sheathing according to the flue pipe diameter, fitting the collar under the upper row of roofing tiles from the ridge downwards (never the other way round, so that rainwater cannot get under the edge of the collar), mechanically anchoring the frame to a solid base with a sufficient number of fasteners, and finally connecting it to the flue pipe itself, including checking the tightness of the joint.

An important part of correct installation is also maintaining the prescribed clearance distances of the flue pipe from combustible roof truss structures in accordance with STN EN 15287 and STN 73 4201, as well as ensuring the correct slope of the vertical section of the flue pipe so that condensate from the condensing technology flows back towards the boiler, rather than accumulating at low points along the route.

Compatibility with Vaillant boilers

The flashing is compatible with concentric flue pipes used with Vaillant condensing gas boilers of the ecoTEC, ecoTEC plus, ecoTEC exclusiv, ecoCOMPACT and turboTEC series, as well as their current successor models. Before ordering, we recommend checking the exact diameter of the flue pipe used in the technical documentation of your specific boiler, as Vaillant manufactures flashings in several diameter and pitch variants.

Advantages over non-original alternatives

Universal roof flashings from various manufacturers can also be found on the market, but they may not exactly match the dimensions or materials specified for the Vaillant flue pipe system. Using a non-original part can lead to leaks, reduced resistance of the collar to temperatures around the flue pipe, or even loss of the boiler warranty or the warranty on the entire flue gas system, as the manufacturer only guarantees trouble-free function and service life when using its own, purpose-designed components.

Service life and care

With correct installation, the service life of this flashing is comparable to the service life of the roof covering itself, i.e. roughly 15 to 25 years. We recommend including it in the annual boiler service inspection carried out by an authorised technician – the check mainly involves a visual assessment of the flexibility and integrity of the collar, the condition of the fasteners and the tightness of the joint with the flue pipe. The first signs of wear (material stiffening, small cracks, loose anchoring) should be addressed by replacing the part before actual leakage into the roof truss occurs.

Relation to safe and efficient boiler operation

A leaking or incorrectly installed flue pipe passage through the roof does not only pose a risk of water ingress – with turbo condensing boilers with a closed combustion chamber (type C according to the classification of the flue gas discharge and combustion air supply method), a leak around the concentric pipe can also affect the correct ratio of combustion air drawn in, which translates into reduced combustion efficiency and higher operating costs. A properly installed and colour-matched flashing is therefore an investment not only in the appearance of the roof, but also in the long-term trouble-free and economical operation of the heating system.

What the flashing does not include and what needs to be ordered separately

The package includes the collar itself with the sealing lip and the mounting frame. The vertical flue pipe, any elbows for changing the direction of the route, extensions to bridge the height of the roof truss, and the roof terminal with the termination above the roof need to be ordered separately according to the specific layout of the installation – you will find these components in the Vaillant accessories range at atria.sk, where a complete flue pipe route can be assembled exactly to suit the specific building.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What exact shade of red does this flashing have?
It is a shade close to the common terracotta/brick tile colour used on most Slovak roofs (roughly corresponding to RAL 3009 or a similar terracotta tone). For a very specific roofing colour, we recommend comparing it with a reference sample from the seller before ordering a larger quantity.

Is this flashing more or less durable than the black variant?
No, both colour variants are made from the same base material and have identical technical and mechanical properties – they differ solely in the colour finish of the collar's surface.

Can I use this flashing on a red metal roof as well?
Yes, as long as the roof pitch falls within the intended range, it can also be used on profiled metal roofing in red, not just on tiles.

What if the shade of the collar changes slightly over time due to the sun?
Slight colour fading over the years is a natural phenomenon for materials exposed to long-term UV radiation and affects the roof covering itself to a similar degree, so colour matching remains preserved even after years of use.

Can this flashing be added to an existing roof afterwards without intervention on the entire roof truss?
Yes, installation only requires local intervention at the point of passage, not modification of the entire roof structure. However, access to the relevant part of the roof must be ensured, and all safety rules for working at height must be followed.

Do I need special tools to install this flashing?
Installation requires standard sheet metal and construction tools for cutting the roofing and sheathing, as well as standard tools for anchoring the mounting frame – no specialised tools available only to the manufacturer are needed.

Do you also sell other colour variants of this flashing, e.g. brown or grey?
The atria.sk range also includes the black version of the same flashing for dark roofing. If you are interested in another specific shade, we recommend contacting our customer service, who can check the availability of other colour variants directly with the manufacturer.

Does the colour of the flashing affect the price of the product?
Colour variants within the manufacturer's range may differ slightly in price depending on the production costs for the given shade and the current availability of the specific variant from the supplier, but all colour finishes are functionally and qualitatively equivalent.

Can this flashing be ordered separately without the other flue pipe parts if I already have the rest of the route prepared?
Yes, the flashing can also be ordered separately, for example as a replacement for a damaged original part within an existing installation, without the need to replace the remaining components of the flue gas path, provided they remain functional, tight and undamaged.

Do you recommend consulting the choice of colour with the installation company before ordering?
Yes, since the installation company knows the exact shade of the roof covering on the specific building, it is advisable to confirm the colour of the flashing with them before placing a binding order for the material, in order to avoid a possible additional replacement after discovering a colour mismatch directly on the roof.

Planning the position of the passage in the project

As with other roof flashings, the same principle applies here: the position of the passage should be planned already at the roof and heating distribution design stage, not solved afterwards once the roof truss is finished. Ideally, the flue pipe route should be as short as possible with the fewest changes of direction, as each elbow increases the pressure loss in the flue gas path and may in some cases require adjustment of the boiler settings or the use of a more powerful flue gas fan. At the same time, when choosing the location of the passage, distances from windows, ventilation shafts, neighbouring properties and the roof ridge must be taken into account, as well as aesthetic considerations – the flue outlet should not be located on the most exposed part of the roof facing the street, if this can be avoided given the layout of the house.

Practical experience – why it pays to sort out the colour in advance

Service companies carrying out condensing boiler installations repeatedly encounter situations where the customer did not sort out the flashing colour in advance, and a standard (often black) variant was delivered to the site, which looks like a visible flaw once installed on a red tiled roof. Replacing the collar after it has already been built into the roofing is considerably more labour-intensive and costly than choosing the right colour in advance, as it requires partial dismantling of the surrounding roofing. For this reason, we recommend discussing the colour of the flashing with the installation company already when ordering material for the construction, ideally directly based on a sample or photo of the roof covering.

Effect of roof orientation on the service life of the collar

Roof sections facing south and south-west are exposed to significantly more intense sunlight than northern slopes, which also affects the rate of UV degradation of the roof flashing material. For installations on strongly exposed south-facing roof slopes, we recommend a somewhat more frequent visual inspection of the collar's condition as part of regular boiler servicing, as material wear may be somewhat faster in these positions than on more shaded north-facing roof slopes.

Relation to inspection and cleaning of the flue gas path

According to current legislation on the inspection of chimneys and flue gas paths, the flue pipe of a condensing boiler routed through the roof is also subject to regular inspection by a chimney sweep, usually at intervals set by decree depending on the type of fuel and the output of the appliance. The roof passage of which this flashing is a part should be designed so that, once completed, access to the inspection openings on the flue pipe (if fitted along the route) remains preserved, or so that the route is designed in such a way that inspection is possible from below, from the boiler room, without the need for repeated access to the roof. This must be taken into account already when designing the flue pipe route, not only after the flashing has been built into the roofing.

Relation to applicable legislation and standards

The installation of flue gas paths for condensing boilers in Slovakia is governed mainly by the standard STN EN 15287 (Chimneys – Design, installation and commissioning of chimneys – Part 1: Chimneys for non-roomsealed heating appliances), STN 73 4201 governing general requirements for chimneys and flue pipes, as well as the decree on fire safety of buildings when dealing with clearance distances from combustible structures. Compliance with these regulations is a necessary condition not only for safe operation, but also for the validity of the boiler warranty and the warranty on the entire flue gas system, as most service and insurance claims related to roof leaks or flue gas leaks are assessed precisely in relation to compliance with these standards during installation.

Ordering recommendation for installation companies

For heating and construction companies carrying out multiple installations at the same time, we recommend always stating the colour of the roof covering directly in the order or in the project notes when ordering material for a specific building, in order to avoid mixing up colour variants between different jobs. Since black and red flashings are mechanically and dimensionally very similar, mix-ups in stock or during transport between construction sites happen fairly often in practice, and discovering this only on the roof during installation causes unnecessary delays.

Summary

The Vaillant roof flashing for pitched roofs in red is functionally equivalent to the black variant, but thanks to its colour finish it is intended primarily for roofs with traditional red, brick or terracotta tiles, which are predominant in Slovakia. It ensures a long-term airtight and watertight passage of a condensing boiler flue pipe through a pitched roof while maintaining a uniform appearance of the roof covering, and as an original Vaillant part it guarantees full compatibility with the entire flue gas system of the boiler.
