Wall-mounted vs. portable air conditioner
When a customer at atria.sk is looking for an air conditioner, one of the first questions they ask is: buy a wall-mounted split air conditioner with an outdoor unit, or make life simpler with a portable air conditioner on wheels that you just plug into a socket and run a hose out the window? There is no universal answer - it depends on whether you own your property or rent it, whether you can modify the building's facade, how large the space you're cooling is, and how many days a year you'll actually use the air conditioner. In this article we compare both types practically, using real-world figures commonly seen in practice, and we also show specific products from the atria.sk range that are among the popular wall-mounted solutions.
How they work - the cooling principle
Both types of air conditioner work on the same physical principle - refrigerant in a closed circuit absorbs heat from the room and releases it outside. The difference lies in where the compressor and condenser are located, i.e. the parts that actually "release" the heat outside the room.
With a wall-mounted (split) air conditioner, the system is divided into two units. The indoor unit hangs on the wall of the room and contains the evaporator and a fan that blows cooled air into the room. The outdoor unit is placed on the facade, balcony or roof and contains the compressor and condenser, where the heat is actually released into the outside air. Refrigerant piping and a condensate drain hose for removing water from the air run between the two units.
With a portable air conditioner, the entire cooling circuit is in a single cabinet on wheels that stands directly in the room. The warm air from the condenser has to be vented somewhere - which is why a portable air conditioner always has an exhaust hose that runs outside through a window, through a balcony door, or through a special wall vent. This hose is precisely the key compromise of portable units, which we discuss in more detail below.
Output and real cooling efficiency
This is the area where the difference between the two types is greatest, yet least visible at first glance - both types are sold with similarly looking labels such as "9000 BTU", "12000 BTU" and so on. In practice, however, a wall-mounted split air conditioner with a stated cooling capacity of, for example, 2.7 kW will actually deliver a cooling output to the room close to its rated value, because the entire compressor circuit is outside the cooled space and the indoor unit merely distributes air that has already been cooled.
A portable air conditioner with the same stated output cools noticeably weaker in practice - the reason is the so-called single-hose principle used by most portable units on the market. The compressor fan draws in the air it needs to cool the condenser directly from the room and blows it outside through the hose. This creates a slight negative pressure in the room, and warm air from outside gets drawn in through gaps around windows and doors - a phenomenon many users mistakenly interpret as "weak unit performance", even though it is a physical property of the design. In practice this means the real cooling effect of a portable air conditioner is roughly 30 to 40 % lower than its rated label output would suggest, compared to a split unit of the same rating.
Energy efficiency is expressed by the EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio) for cooling. Common mid- and higher-range wall-mounted split units achieve an EER of 3.2 to 3.6, corresponding to energy class A++ to A+++. Portable air conditioners typically fall in the EER range of 2.6 to 2.9, i.e. energy class A or lower. A higher EER means the unit delivers more cooling per unit of electricity consumed - in practice, a wall-mounted air conditioner cools the same room for less money and in less time.

Installation - complexity and cost
A portable air conditioner can theoretically be up and running in a few minutes - just unbox it, place it near a window, run the hose through a special sealing panel into the window or balcony door, and plug it into a standard 230 V socket. No electrician, no refrigeration technician, no work on the facade. This is exactly why it is popular with tenants, in rented offices, or in listed heritage buildings where drilling into the facade simply cannot be approved.
A wall-mounted split air conditioner requires professional installation. The installation company must drill a hole through the wall (usually 50 - 65 mm in diameter) for the refrigerant piping, mount the outdoor unit on brackets on the facade or on a roof stand, connect both units with insulated copper piping, run a condensate drain, and finally carry out so-called vacuuming of the circuit (removing air and moisture from the pipework) and a tightness check. This work typically takes 3 to 6 hours per unit, and in 2026 its price in Slovakia typically ranges from EUR 150 to 350, depending on the pipe length, the height of the building, and how difficult it is to access the installation site by crane or climbing equipment.
It's also worth bearing in mind that in apartment buildings, mounting the outdoor unit on the facade of shared areas usually requires the consent of the homeowners' association or building manager - a point customers often forget and only discover when the installation company is due to arrive to install the unit.

Operating noise
Noise level matters most for air conditioning in bedrooms, where the unit runs all night. A wall-mounted split air conditioner has its noisy compressor relocated to the outdoor unit, so the indoor unit works in night (quiet) mode at around 19 to 26 dB(A), comparable to the quiet rustle of leaves or a whisper. The outdoor unit does emit 50 to 58 dB(A), but it is placed outside the living space and usually doesn't bother a neighbour behind a window, provided the outdoor unit is placed sensibly (not facing a neighbour's bedroom window).
A portable air conditioner has its compressor directly in the room with the user, which is why its noise level typically ranges from 42 to 52 dB(A) - comparable to normal conversation or a noisier washing machine. For many people this is disruptive in a bedroom at night, which is why portable units are more often used in living rooms, offices, or rooms not used for sleeping.
Purchase price and operating costs
Mid-range portable air conditioners with an output of around 2.6 - 2.9 kW commonly sell on the Slovak market in the price range of roughly EUR 300 to 500. Appearance, space and practicality in the home
A portable air conditioner takes up floor space while running, usually near a window, and when moving the unit between rooms you always have to relocate the hose with the sealing panel as well. Some users are also bothered by the look of it - a white or grey cabinet with a hose hanging out of the window doesn't look particularly stylish in a living room. The advantage is that the air conditioner can be moved to another room at any time, or taken with you when moving house.
A wall-mounted unit hangs fixed on the wall in one spot, which is a cleaner solution from an interior design perspective - modern models have flat white covers that fit into almost any interior and don't take up floor space or space around the window. The downside is exactly this permanence - the unit cannot be moved elsewhere without further intervention, and when moving out of a flat, the outdoor unit stays on the facade of the original property (removing and reinstalling it elsewhere is another paid service from the installation company).

Maintenance and cleaning - where the extra work lies
Here too, the fact that a portable air conditioner has its entire cooling circuit in the living space becomes apparent. The condensate water tank on portable units without a separate drain often has to be emptied manually, sometimes as often as every two to three days during intensive use in more humid weather - if the user forgets or is away, the unit automatically shuts off and stops cooling until the tank is emptied. The filter, on the other hand, is cleaned similarly easily to a wall-mounted unit, usually by pulling it out and rinsing it under running water.
A wall-mounted air conditioner has the condensate permanently drained through a hose running alongside the refrigerant piping to the outside, so the user never has to deal with the water at all. Maintenance of the indoor unit mainly consists of regularly cleaning or replacing the air filter (recommended once every 2 to 4 weeks during the season), and an annual professional service is recommended, during which the refrigerant level is checked, the heat exchanger on the outdoor unit is cleaned, and the electrical components are inspected. This annual check-up typically costs EUR 40 to 80 and helps extend the unit's service life to the aforementioned 10 to 15 years.
From the everyday user's point of view, a portable air conditioner therefore requires more frequent but simpler manual care (emptying water, cleaning the filter), while a wall-mounted air conditioner requires less frequent but more specialised care (annual servicing of the cooling circuit).
Effect on indoor air quality
Since a portable air conditioner (especially the common single-hose type) draws part of the air used to cool the condenser directly from outside through gaps around windows and doors, outdoor dust, pollen, and in urban environments also some exhaust fumes enter the room along with it. For allergy sufferers this can be an unpleasant side effect during pollen season - one that is usually not mentioned when buying a portable air conditioner.
A wall-mounted split unit works with a closed refrigerant circuit and merely recirculates the room air through its filter, without needing to draw in fresh air from outside to run the compressor. The indoor unit can therefore genuinely, temporarily "seal off" the room from outdoor dust and pollen, which allergy sufferers and families with small children commonly value as a real, if secondary, benefit over a portable solution.
When to choose a portable and when a wall-mounted air conditioner
A portable air conditioner makes sense primarily when you cannot or do not want to make changes to the facade - typically in a rented flat without the owner's consent, in a listed heritage building, in a fixed-term office lease, or simply when you need a quick, temporary solution for one hot summer without a major investment. It's also a practical choice if you only cool one room occasionally and that room changes (for example, sometimes a bedroom, sometimes a home office), and you appreciate being able to simply move the unit around.
A wall-mounted split air conditioner is worth it when you own your property, plan to use the air conditioner regularly and long-term, care about quiet operation while sleeping, and want to keep operating costs under control. Given its significantly higher real cooling output (in our comparison, 2.6 kW versus 1.7 kW at the same rated 2.7 kW), a wall-mounted unit is also the safer choice for larger or sun-exposed rooms, where a portable air conditioner simply wouldn't keep up.

Frequently asked questions
Can a portable air conditioner be used without a window, for example in a room with no ventilation?
Not recommended. A portable air conditioner necessarily needs to vent warm air outside - either through a window using a sealing panel, through a partly open balcony door, or through a wall vent. Without this vent, the heat from the condenser would stay in the room and the air conditioner would practically not cool at all, just circulate warm air.
Is a dual-hose portable air conditioner worth it instead of a single-hose one?
Yes, dual-hose portable air conditioners (one hose draws in air from outside to cool the condenser, the other vents it back out) eliminate the negative-pressure problem in the room and achieve a real output much closer to the rated value than common single-hose models. However, they are more expensive and less common in the range than single-hose models.
How long does installing a wall-mounted air conditioner take, and do I need to be home?
Standard installation of one split unit takes 3 to 6 hours, depending on pipe length and how difficult it is to access the outdoor unit. The presence of the owner or an authorised person is needed at least at the start (letting in the technicians, deciding on placement) and at the end (handover, remote control briefing).
Can I install a wall-mounted air conditioner myself to save on installation costs?
Not recommended. Installation includes vacuuming the refrigerant circuit and working with refrigerant, which requires professional qualification and certification (handling F-gases is regulated by law in Slovakia). Incorrect vacuuming or a leaky joint leads to refrigerant loss, reduced output, and in the worst case, compressor damage.
Which option has a lower risk of failure?
Wall-mounted split units are generally more robust and have a longer declared and actual service life (10 - 15 years versus 5 - 8 years for portable units under comparable use), since the compressor operates in more stable outdoor conditions and is not exposed to indoor dust and dirt as intensively as in portable units, where the whole circuit sits in the living space.
Can a wall-mounted air conditioner also be used for heating during transitional seasons?
