In the shower head, this is exactly what happens: water passes through a mesh filter, is divided into dozens of small nozzles, and at the end of each shower, a droplet of water remains inside, which gradually evaporates. Water hardness is measured in degrees dH (German degrees) or mmol/l. In Slovakia, water hardness varies greatly – for example, in Bratislava and its surroundings, the water is moderately hard to hard (12–20 °dH), and in some parts of central Slovakia, it can be even harder. At a hardness level above 14 °dH, you will notice limescale relatively quickly – with regular use, nozzles can start to clog after 3–6 months without regular maintenance.
In addition to limescale, the following also settle on the head and on the hose:
- Biofilm – a thin layer of bacteria and fungi (typically Pseudomonas or Legionella), which forms mainly in the rubber parts of the nozzle and inside the supply hose
- Soap deposits – residues of fatty acids from shower gels and shampoos, which form a grayish or yellowish film
- Rust and corrosion products – in older metal hoses or with poor-quality alloys, deposits in the threads
- Mold – especially around seals and in the gaps between rubber and plastic
Signs of clogging and neglected maintenance – what practice says
From practice, we know that customers often ignore the first signs of clogging in the shower head for months until the problem escalates to the point where replacement is necessary. Recognize the warning signs as early as possible:
- Some nozzles do not spray at all or spray sideways – a classic sign of mechanically clogged openings by limescale
- Overall flow has decreased, although the pressure in the pipe is the same – limescale has settled on the filtering screen or in the supply
- Water does not switch correctly in massage positions – limescale blocks internal distribution valves
- Odor from the shower head – biofilm inside, typically stagnant water during long-term non-use

Modern shower heads are equipped with silicone nozzles precisely because they can be cleaned with a finger. Simply run your thumb or index finger over the rubber surface of the nozzle and the limescale will break up, because the rubber bends and the scale (which is brittle) cracks and falls off. This method is the fastest, does not damage the surface, and you can do it in 30 seconds during a shower.
With solid plastic nozzles (older type), you must proceed more carefully – use a soft toothbrush or silicone spatula. A harder brush or metal tool could damage the opening and change the direction of the flow.
2. Soaking in vinegar – standard deep cleaning
White vinegar (10–12 % acetic acid) is the most effective and at the same time the safest means for dissolving limescale. It works by chemically reacting with calcium carbonate and converting it into soluble salts and CO₂ – thus the deposit is effectively broken down without mechanical stress.
Procedure when removing the head:
- Unscrew the shower head from the hose or from the arm (usually just a hand turn, possibly a wrench size 22–24 with hose protection)
- Place the head in a container (bowl, pot) and pour white vinegar over it so that the nozzle side is submerged

An advantage of citric acid is that it is biodegradable, safe for skin contact, and suitable for sensitive surfaces (matte chrome, brushed stainless steel, black lacquer). A disadvantage is its higher price compared to vinegar.
4. Commercial descaling agents
There are special gels and sprays available on the market for descaling (e.g., Cillit Bang, Krystal descaler, etc.), which contain mixtures of acids and surfactants. Their advantage is that they are formulated to not tarnish chrome surfaces and the remaining dirt can be rinsed off more easily. A disadvantage is that many of them are not suitable for prolonged exposure – follow the maximum time specified on the label, otherwise they may cloud or scratch the surface.
Never use hydrochloric acid (muriatic acid, so-called "hadex" or WC cleaners with HCl) on chrome or nickel surfaces – these acids irreversibly damage them!
5. Cleaning the filter and mesh – a step often forgotten
Every shower head has a small filtering mesh at its inlet (where it is screwed onto the hose or arm). This mesh captures impurities from the pipes and prevents them from entering the nozzle body. If it becomes clogged, it will result in a general drop in flow, regardless of the condition of the nozzles.

- Let water drain after turning off – hold the head downward for a few seconds after turning off to let gravity help drain the remaining water from the nozzles.

Can I put the shower head into the dishwasher?
This question is surprisingly common. The answer is: it depends on the material. Plastic heads without metal decorations can usually handle the dishwasher on a low temperature (40 °C, gentle program). Chrome-plated heads, matte lacquered heads, or heads with metal elements do not belong in the dishwasher – high temperature and aggressive tablets can damage the surface, peel off the chrome, or deform the plastic. It is always safer to use traditional soaking in vinegar.
Vinegar doesn't work – the limescale didn't dissolve even after 12 hours. What to do?
If the scale is extremely thick and old (several years), regular white vinegar (5–8 % acetic acid) may not have sufficient concentration. Try industrial vinegar with a concentration of 20–25 % (available at a chemical store, not a food store). An alternative is citric acid at a concentration of 100 g/liter.
