The shower hose is one of the most stressed parts of the entire shower system. It is bent every day, heated by hot and cold water flows, twisted, coiled, sometimes stepped on, or closed by the door of the shower cabin. Despite this, most users pay practically no attention to the hose and its fittings – until the moment when water starts dripping from it, the pressure under the shower suddenly drops, or the hose bursts and floods the entire bathroom. In this article, we will look at all common faults that we repeatedly see in service practice, and we will show what causes them, how to diagnose them, and how to properly eliminate them – ideally without calling a plumber.
Why do shower hoses break down at all?
A shower hose consists of three layers: an outer braiding (stainless steel fibers or plastic), a middle reinforcing layer, and an inner hose through which water flows. Each layer ages differently. The outer sheath cracks and loses elasticity, the inner hose becomes brittle, twists, and cracks, and the braiding deforms. In most cases, problems appear at the connections – that is, at the places where the hose connects to the mixer and handheld shower fittings. Precisely here mechanical stresses occur, here the seals are placed, and here limescale appears the fastest.
The lifespan of a standard hose depends on the quality of the material, the chemical composition of the water in the network, and how the hose is used daily. In areas with hard water (which is most of Slovakia – Bratislava, Nitra, Trnava, Košice) problems appear sooner than in areas with soft water. A standard mid-range hose should last 5–10 years with normal use. Cheap hoses from promotional offers may start causing problems after just 2–3 years.
Dripping from the hose connection to the mixer
Dripping is by far the most common fault. We usually notice it either directly during showering (drops run down the body of the mixer) or after showering, when we find a wet floor without an obvious cause. Dripping can come from two places: from the connection of the hose to the mixer (the lower end of the hose) or from the connection of the hose to the handheld shower (the upper end of the hose).
Why does the connection at the mixer drip?
The connection is made up of the hose nut (usually 1/2" thread) and the mixer fitting. A flat sealing washer – usually rubber or EPDM – lies between them. This washer has a lifespan of 3–8 years, depending on the water temperature and the cleaning agents used in the shower. When the seal ages, it loses elasticity, compresses unevenly, and starts to leak water.
The solution is simple: unscrew the hose nut (usually by hand, or use a combination wrench with protected jaws to avoid scratching the chrome surface), remove the old seal, insert a new one (price 0.20–0.50 € per piece, available in any hardware store), and tighten it. Do not over-tighten – the seal only needs to be tightened enough to sit evenly. If the hose still drips after new seals, the thread is likely damaged or the hose nut is cracked.
Dripping at the handheld shower
The upper end of the hose connects to the body of the handheld shower. The seal is of the same type here, but smaller and mechanically more stressed – the shower is rotated, tilted, held, and passed from hand to hand. The seal lasts less here. The replacement procedure is the same. Note: some showers have an internal seal with a mesh filter. Do not discard this filter – it is used to catch impurities and before reinstalling, rinse it under running water.
If you replace the seal and dripping still does not stop, try wrapping the thread with Teflon tape (1–2 layers). This is an acceptable solution, but properly made threads should not need sealing – PTFE tape is a rescue for slightly worn threads.
Low water pressure: the hose or the fitting?
Low pressure is the second most common complaint. A customer comes with the issue that "the shower flows weakly," but when we check the pressure in the piping – it is normal. The problem is therefore not in the water supply, but somewhere between the mixer fitting and the output holes of the shower head.
Scale in the filter mesh
The vast majority of cases of low pressure have a simple cause: a clogged filter mesh at the hose inlet (or at the shower inlet). This mesh looks like a small brass or plastic grid with holes of about 0.3–0.8 mm. Over a year of operation in hard water, an enormous amount of limescale and fine impurities from the pipes are filtered through it. If the mesh is not regularly cleaned, it can be clogged by 80–100 %.
Solution: unscrew the hose, remove the mesh (gently scratch it with a needle or a matchstick), place it in a solution of citric acid (one tablespoon per glass of water) for 30–60 minutes, rinse it, and put it back in place. In practical experience, we have seen meshes so clogged that not even a drop of water could pass through – the owner was convinced that the entire shower unit was broken.
Deformation of the inner hose
If the hose is stored for a long time folded, twisted, or squeezed under furniture, the inner hose can become permanently deformed. A narrowing of the flow occurs at the site of deformation, which acts like a partially closed valve. The pressure at the shower outlet drops, while the pressure at the inlet remains normal.
How to detect it: try to straighten the hose into a flat position and test the pressure. If the pressure improves, this confirms mechanical deformation. The solution is to replace the hose. It is not a fault that needs to be repaired – a deformed hose is not worth keeping in operation, because a narrowed section creates higher mechanical stress and the hose is more likely to burst.
Clogged shower head
Weak water flow can also be on the shower side, not the hose. Calcified outlet holes in the shower head reduce the flow, and at the same time cause uneven flow (some holes are flowing, others are not). Network pressure is actually low
Sometimes the cause is really in the supply. The pressure in the apartment network should be between 2.0 and 4.0 bar. Below 1.5 bar, most shower sets function only limitedly. Measure the pressure with a simple manometer at the drain valve – this check takes 2 minutes and definitively rules out a problem on the water supply side. If the pressure is low, the solution is not a new hose, but pressure regulation or consultation with the building manager.
Hose burst: how it happens and what to do
A burst hose is an acute fault that usually comes unexpectedly – in the morning you go to the shower and the hose is standing in a puddle of water, or it breaks while you are showering. In practical experience, we distinguish several types of hose bursts.
Burst at the joint (nut)
This is the most common type. The hose nut – plastic or metal – most often cracks at the narrowest point: that is, in the thread groove. There are two causes. First, the nut was tightened with pliers without protection during installation and the thread was squeezed too much. Second, the nut is plastic and cracked due to aging. Plastic nuts (white or beige) are a typical sign of a cheaper range – on higher quality hoses, the nuts are made of galvanized brass or stainless steel.
Solution: replace the entire hose. It makes no sense to glue a cracked nut, because the patch will not withstand the water pressure and will not be watertight.
Burst inside the braid
The inner hose bursts and water starts to leak through the braid – usually diffusely, the entire hose or one of its sections "sweats". This type of failure occurs due to material aging (PVC becomes brittle), chemical damage (aggressive cleaning agents), or mechanical damage (for example, pinching the hose in the shower cubicle door). Solution: replace the hose.
Detachment of the braid
The outer braid detaches from the nut – you can see that the braid "comes out" and the nut remains bare. This happens with hoses with a crimped (not threaded) braid termination and is either a manufacturing defect or a sign of extreme mechanical stress. The hose is dangerous in this condition, because the inner hose is not protected and can burst anywhere.
Selecting the right replacement hose: dimensions and compatibility
Before purchasing a replacement hose, check three parameters: the connector diameter, the hose length, and the type of braid. The most common connector diameter is 1/2" (about 15 mm outer diameter of the nut), which is a universal standard used by more than 95 % of standard shower units on the Slovak market. There are also 3/4" hoses, but they are more of an exception in industrial and hotel environments.
Hose length: the standard is 150 cm, an extended version is 200 cm, and for children or compact showers, 100 cm is also available. Braid: stainless steel braids are more resistant to mechanical damage and look more representative, while plastic (PA, PE) braids are lighter and cheaper, but less durable. For devices where the hose is used intensively every day, we recommend stainless steel braiding.
Problems with the connector (nipple) on the shower unit
The shower unit's nipple (the outlet connector to which the hose nut is screwed) can be a source of problems on its own. The most common problems:
- Damaged thread: If someone installed the hose by force or tightened it crookedly, the thread of the nipple can wear out or tear. Result: the hose cannot be tightened properly and it still drips, or it is crooked. Some shower units have replaceable nipples, but for most cheaper models, a damaged nipple is a reason to replace the entire shower unit.
- Broken nipple: If the hose is in a tense position for a long time (too short hose, incorrect direction), the nipple can crack. It is a metal part, but even brass can crack under long-term vibrational stress. A broken nipple is an emergency situation – water leaks directly from the shower unit and you need to immediately shut off the water supply.
- Nipple corrosion: In areas with aggressive water (high chlorine content, soft acidic water), the surface of the nipple corrodes, which prevents the sealing from seating properly. The solution is to replace the nipple or the entire shower unit.
Special case: wall-mounted shower unit and hose
If you have a wall-mounted shower unit, the situation is a bit more complicated. The outlet connectors of a wall-mounted shower unit are usually hidden behind the tiling and access to them is limited. Leaking at a wall-mounted shower unit can lead to water seeping behind the tiling and damaging the wall. If you notice moisture on the wall around the wall-mounted shower unit, immediately shut off the water supply and consult a specialist. Shower sets and hoses: practical recommendations from practice
When choosing a replacement part or a completely new set, it pays to consider the whole, not just the faulty component. If the hose is five years old and starting to leak, it is very likely that the shower head will cause problems in a year. Replacing the entire set at once is cheaper and more convenient than replacing parts one by one.

Installation, disassembly, and most common mistakes when replacing the hose
Replacing a shower hose is one of the simplest bathroom repairs. Despite this, people repeatedly make the same mistakes. We summarize them here so you can avoid them.
- Installation without sealing: A missing or omitted gasket is a guarantee of immediate dripping. Always check that the gasket is seated in the nut groove before tightening.
- Twisted hose: If you turn the nut and the hose turns with it, the hose twists inside. The correct procedure: hold the hose body with one hand and turn the nut with the other. The same applies to both ends.
- Using pliers without protection: Pliers can scratch chrome or nickel on the nuts. Use pliers wrapped in a cloth or a special wrench with a soft jaw.
- Over-tightening: The hose only needs to be tightened "by hand firmly + half a turn with the wrench". Over-tightening deforms the gasket and can damage the thread.
- Ignoring the filter mesh: Always check the condition of the filter mesh during disassembly. Replace or clean a clogged mesh – otherwise you will still have low pressure after a new hose.

When to replace only the hose and when to replace the whole set?
This question is very practical in practice. Basic rule: if the hose is less than 3 years old and the rest of the set (shower, rod) is in good condition, it is worth replacing only the hose. If the hose is more than 5 years old and is starting to cause problems, consider replacing the entire set.
Another reason to replace the entire set: non-functioning shower position setting. If the shower does not stay in the desired position or the sliding clamp slides down, it is not a fault that needs to be "repaired" – such wear cannot be compensated for in the long term and replacing the rod together with the hose and shower is the most rational solution.

Prevention: how to extend the life of the hose and connections
Preventive care can extend the life of the hose by years. Here are specific recommendations based on practical experience:
- Do not twist the hose: After showering, lay the hose out freely, do not leave it twisted. Every twist is a small bend that weakens the inner hose.
- Clean the mesh once a year: Unscrew the hose, remove the mesh, rinse it or soak it in citric acid for 30 minutes. The procedure is the same as for cleaning the shower head.
- Check the seals: Check the condition of the rubber seals once every two years. If they are hard, cracked or flattened, replace them preventively – a seal costs just a few cents.
- Do not use aggressive cleaning agents directly on the hose: Acidic degreasers and strong chlorine-based products accelerate the degradation of plastic and rubber.
- Install a softener or filter: In areas with hard water (more than 25 °dH), the installation of a softening filter on the hot water supply will help. It significantly extends the life of hoses, seals and shower heads.
- Monitor pressure: If you have a pressure in the network above 4.5 bar, install a pressure reducing valve. High pressure shortens the life of all rubber and plastic parts.
Compatibility: replacement parts and non-standard connections
Not every hose fits every faucet. Most of the Slovak market works with a 1/2" BSP (British pipe thread) connection, but there are exceptions – especially with older or imported faucets. If you are unsure about the type of thread, measure the outer diameter of the connector: 15 mm = 1/2", 20 mm = 3/4".
There are also adapters for transitioning between different types of threads, but their use is a temporary solution – ideally, all components of the set should be mutually compatible from the factory. Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
My hose is dripping only when I'm showering, not when the faucet is closed. Is it the seal or something else?
If it only drips under pressure (when water is flowing), but not when the faucet is closed, it is most likely a worn or shifted seal in the hose connector. The seal holds at zero pressure, but is insufficient under operating pressure (2–4 bar). Replace the seal at both ends of the hose, or apply Teflon tape to the thread.
My hose burst, but I still have a new one in stock. Can I install it myself without a plumber?
Yes, replacing a shower hose does not require professional certification or special tools. Simply turn off the water supply (usually under the bathtub or at the apartment's water distributor), unscrew the old hose, replace both seals with new ones, install the new hose and turn the water back on. The whole process takes 5–10 minutes.
After replacing the hose, I still have low pressure. Why?
The new hose solved the mechanical issue, but the low pressure may be due to another reason. The most common cause is a clogged filter mesh – either at the faucet inlet (inside) or in the hand shower body. Check both locations. If the pressure is still low after cleaning the filters, measure the actual pressure in the system.
Can I use any hose with my shower faucet, or do I have to buy from the same manufacturer?
Hoses with a 1/2" thread are interchangeable regardless of the manufacturer – it is a standardized size. Only two things are important: the same thread (1/2" or 3/4") and compatible length. You don't have to buy a hose from the same manufacturer as the faucet. An exception may be exotic designer faucets with non-standard connections.
My hose twists and forms loops every few months. Is there a solution?
Hose twisting is a typical issue with sets where the hand shower is held and rotated. The solution is a hose with a swivel (rotating) connector – at least at one end. A swivel connector allows the hose to rotate freely without twisting the inner hose. Most quality hoses have a swivel connector by default, cheaper ones do not. Ask about this feature when purchasing.
I notice that the entire hose body is "sweating" – the hose is wet to the touch, but there are no visible drops. Is this normal?
No, this is not normal. "Sweating" of the hose indicates that the inner hose is micro-cracked and water is diffusing through the braiding. This is the beginning of a catastrophic rupture – replace the hose as soon as possible before a major water leak occurs. Hoses that "sweat" usually have a damaged inner plastic lining and are not repairable.

It is enough to spend a few minutes once a year visually inspecting the seals, filters and overall condition of the hose.
