In practice, however, we see dozens of cases where a customer orders a complete shower set, installs it on the valve, and after two weeks calls to say that the hose is leaking, the head sprays weakly, or the entire rod has slipped down. Most of the time, the problem is not a faulty product but a skipped step during installation – an old gasket not replaced, a washer installed backwards, or a rod hung on a too narrow bracket. What a typical shower set contains and what you will need
Before you pick up the wrench, spread out the contents of the box on the floor and compare them with the included manual. A complete shower set usually includes:
- Handheld shower head – with one to five flow positions (rain, massage, combination, etc.)
- Shower hose – most commonly 150 cm or 175 cm in length, with a G 1/2" thread (ISO 228)
- Shower rod or sliding bar – usually 60–90 cm, with a sliding head holder
- Connections – either a fixed S-connection to the wall or a swivel connection directly to the valve
- Mounting material – brackets, anchors, screws, gaskets (O-rings, flat gaskets)

As for tools, you will need: a level (a phone app is sufficient), a masonry drill with bits for tile/concrete (6 mm diameter for standard anchors), a flat screwdriver and a PH2 screwdriver, a hose wrench or a solid wrench 24/27 mm, Teflon sealing tape (PTFE), a bucket or cloth to catch residual water, and masking tape for temporary height marking.
Step 1: Checking the existing connection on the valve
The first step is purely diagnostic – check what you have on the valve. Showers usually have a side or top outlet with a G 1/2" thread (external thread). Unscrew the old hose or connection. Important: before unscrewing, turn off the water at the main shut-off valve, or at the local bathroom shut-off. Even after closing the valve, there will be residual water in the hose – so a bucket or cloth is needed. After unscrewing, check the thread on the valve:
- Is it not damaged or cut? The thread must be clean and intact.
- Is there an old gasket or O-ring in the valve body? Remove it. The gasket must always be replaced with a new one – the old one hardens and stops sealing.
- Is the thread G 1/2" (imperial)? This is 99% of all domestic valves in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Exceptions are some older Czech models from the socialist era, where you may encounter non-standard threads – in such cases, a reducer will help.
Step 2: Preparing the gaskets and hose connection
Every shower hose has a threaded part (internal G 1/2") on both ends and a gasket inside – either a flat rubber gasket or an O-ring. If the gasket is not included in the package, or is made of silicone of unsuitable hardness, I recommend buying a set of replacement rubber gaskets G 1/2" (sold in various stores in sets of 4–10 pieces for a few cents).
When using Teflon tape on the threads, remember: always wrap the tape in the direction of the thread (i.e. clockwise when viewed from the end of the thread), 3–5 turns are enough. It is not necessary to use the tape on both sides simultaneously with a rubber gasket – one of them is sufficient. In practice, I use a gasket in the hose nut and PTFE tape only if the thread on the valve is slightly worn.
Step 3: Mounting the Shower Rod or Slide Rail on the Wall
This is the step where people most often "shoot themselves in the foot" – and the result is a rod that tilts after a month or a bracket that falls out of the tile. Let's do it right.
Determining the Correct Height and Position of the Rod
A shower rod is typically mounted 70–100 cm from the bottom of the shower stall, with the top end of the rail at a height from which the sliding bracket can still be comfortably operated. For an average adult (175 cm), the lower bracket at a height of about 75 cm from the floor and the upper one at 155–160 cm works well. If there is also a taller family member in the household or you want a wider range of adjustment, go for a longer rod – for example, the 80 cm version (available in the model MOZART 80 cm without shower head) will give you 20 cm more movement than the basic 60 cm version.
Mark the positions of the brackets with a pencil and check with a spirit level. Don't forget to check whether electrical wiring or water pipes run through the drilling area – this happens relatively often in renovated bathrooms. Use a detection tool or consult an electrician if you're unsure.
Drilling into the Tile: the Most Critical Moment
Ceramic tile is fragile. If you switch the drill to hammer mode immediately, the tile will crack. Procedure:
- Start without hammer mode, at slow speed, using a tile drill bit (carbide tip) – drill through the glaze (about 3–4 mm deep).
- Then switch to hammer mode and drill the rest of the depth according to the length of the anchor (usually 35–40 mm total).
- Tiles at the corner or near grout lines: ideally drill through the grout into the mortar, not into the tile itself.
- Anchors: use plastic anchors with a diameter of 6 mm and length of 35 mm (usually included in the package). Do not use metal self-tapping anchors in fragile tiles.
After inserting the anchors, screw in the brackets – but only with the necessary force, not with brute force. Chrome is soft and plastic parts can easily be damaged under excessive pressure.
Sliding the Rod into the Brackets
Most shower rods have adjustable-diameter brackets and by pressing a safety ring or screw, the rod can be fixed in the desired position. Some models have upper and lower rod ends directly screwed into the brackets. Follow the installation instructions for the specific model.
Step 4: Mounting the Sliding Bracket and Hose Fitting to the Valve
The sliding bracket of the head is mounted on the rod either before or after the rod is fixed in place, depending on the model. In most kits, it is done like this: first, slide the bracket onto the rod from the bottom, then secure the rod in the brackets. Some models have a special lock or a release button – read the instructions.
Once the rod is in place, check that the sliding mechanism moves smoothly along the entire length. If it's rough, don't tighten the side screw too much – it should be tightened just enough to prevent the bracket from falling due to its own weight, but still allow it to be moved up and down with slight pressure.
Now we proceed to the hose fitting on the valve. Check whether the sealing inside the hose nut is properly seated – it should be centered, without folds. Slide the hose onto the valve thread and tighten by hand as far as possible. When you can't turn it by hand anymore, tighten it with a wrench by about 1–1.5 more turns. No more – excessive tightening of the nut made of aluminum alloys (in some cheaper hoses) leads to deformation.
The other end of the hose is connected to the handheld shower head in the same way. In some models, the hose has a swivel fitting (so-called swivel connector) that prevents the hose from twisting during use – in these models, mark which end goes to the valve and which to the head (usually indicated in the instructions or one end is slightly shorter).
Step 5: Mounting the Handheld Shower Head
The handheld shower head is mounted on the free end of the hose with the same G 1/2" thread. The sealing must also be present here. After mounting and tightening, insert the head into the sliding bracket on the rod.

Step 6: Turning on the Water and Checking for Leaks
Before turning on the water, check several times: are all nuts tightened? Is the sealing in the right place? Is the rod securely mounted?
Open the water shut-off and let it flow for a while – first at a low flow rate. Check the connections at both ends of the hose, at the valve connection and at the head. Observe for at least 30–60 seconds. If you see a drop anywhere, immediately stop the water, unscrew the connection, check the sealing, and repeat.
Common causes of leaks after installation:
- Forgotten or not replaced sealing
- Sealing installed crooked or twisted
- Too loose or too tight nut (with composite materials)
- Damaged thread on the valve (solved with Teflon tape or by replacing the valve)
- Poor combination of hose connector and valve (different thread standards in exotic brands)

Step 7: Setting the height and position of the handheld shower
After confirming the tightness, it's time for ergonomic adjustment. Slide the holder up and down the rod to the height where the handheld shower is comfortably within reach – for an adult standing, this is usually at shoulder height or slightly higher (130–145 cm). For children or when sitting on a bathroom stool, a lower position is sufficient (80–100 cm).

For rented apartments or situations where you don't want to drill into the tiling, there are shower bars with suction cups or with a tensioning mechanism (the bar is spread between two walls). These solutions are, however, significantly less stable and unsuitable for heavier shower heads. If you choose this solution, regularly check the suction strength, at least every 2–3 months.
Connecting to a wall-mounted valve
A wall-mounted valve (thermostatic or lever type) has threaded outlets embedded in the wall and usually S-connectors that protrude from the wall at the level of the tiling. These S-connectors can be connected to either a fixed shower arm pointing upwards (for a ceiling or wall-mounted head) or a hose for a handheld shower. Replacing only the hose or only the head
It's not always necessary to replace the entire set. If you have a fixed rod that is in good condition, but the hose has cracked or started to leak, it's enough to replace only the hose. Pay attention to the length (150 cm vs. 175 cm) and the type of connector (double-ended G 1/2"). If the hose is still in good condition, but the head is clogged with limescale or has changed color, replace only the head. Compatibility is almost universal across manufacturers with this standard.

Connecting to a shower column
A shower column is essentially an integrated set – a combination of a shower bar, hose and handheld shower in one body, often supplemented by a fixed upper head (so-called tropical rain). Installing a column is more demanding, as it requires precise positioning of the water connection in the wall, but the philosophy is the same: a G 1/2" thread on the connection, sealing, and secure mounting into the wall.
Maintenance and preventing problems after installation
After a successful installation, a few simple rules apply for the long life of the set:
- Hose: do not leave it bent at a sharp angle or pinched (for example, under a door). Stainless steel hoses are more durable than cheap plastic ones – the investment pays off.
- Shower head: once every 1–2 months, soak it in a solution of water and vinegar (1:1) for 30 minutes or use a special descaling agent. Do not soak it for too long, do not use aggressive acids. - Hose connection: check once a year whether it starts to leak. If it does, replace the seal immediately – the longer you wait, the more water will get into the wall or under the basin.
- Chromed surfaces: wipe with a dry cloth after each use. Water and limescale leave stains that are harder to remove the longer they stay.
Most frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Do I have to replace the seal if the old one looks undamaged?
Yes, I recommend it always. Rubber seals age and harden independently of visible damage – even a piece of rubber that looks fine can be brittle inside and crack under water pressure. G 1/2" seals cost only a few cents and save you from unnecessarily repeating the entire process.
Can I attach any manual shower to an existing hose?
Yes, as long as the hose has a standard G 1/2" thread (which is the case for the vast majority of European products). The only exception are some Scandinavian and American products with a different thread standard – in those cases, a reducer or a new hose is required.
Why does my manual shower tilt out of its position after a while?
The reason is almost always the same: the locking mechanism of the sliding bracket is not properly adjusted or is worn out. Check whether the side screw (or push-button lock) is sufficiently tightened. If the mechanism is made of plastic and shows play, replacing the bracket or the entire rod may be necessary.
How long does a standard installation take if I have no experience?
For a first-time installation without experience, expect 60–90 minutes for a classic configuration (shower valve + rod). An experienced DIY enthusiast can complete it in 30–45 minutes. The biggest time-consuming part is usually drilling into hard tiling or a concrete wall.
The hose is too short – what to do?
If the hose connection on the valve is too far from the shower area, the solution is a longer hose (175 cm or 200 cm) or an extension using an S-connector with a thread. Another option is to use a swivel or telescopic arm (such as TEVERE) to move the outlet closer to the shower area.
Can I attach the shower rod without anchors, using tile adhesive instead?
No, I do not recommend this. Tile adhesives are not designed for dynamic loads (pulling the hose, leaning on the rod). After a few months, the bracket will peel off, usually taking a piece of tile with it. The correct solution is always drilling with an anchor of at least 35 mm depth.
