At first glance, a simple question that everyone asks who is replacing an old shower or building a complete shower set from scratch. In practice, it hides multiple dimensions, standards and technical details, which, if overlooked, will end up with either a leak or a hose that doesn't fit neither the valve nor the handle. After years of work with the installation of bathroom accessories, we have seen dozens of cases where the customer bought a nice hose and then stood in front of the valve with a wrench in hand, turning their head in confusion, wondering why the thread won't turn. This article will give you concrete numbers, comparisons and practical advice so that it doesn't happen to you.

Why diameter and length matter more than you think

A shower hose is not just a "rubber tube between the valve and the shower". It is a pressure hose through which water flows at a pressure of 2–6 bar, it bends tens of thousands of times a year, comes into contact with detergents and limescale, and must remain tight, flexible and strong. If the hose is too short, you will have to pull the shower head with a stretched arm and won't be able to clean the edge of the tub. If it is too long, it drags along the floor of the shower and degrades faster. If it has the wrong thread diameter, either water will leak around it or the thread won't screw at all.

Standard diameters of shower hose threads: what the numbers mean

The basic parameter of every shower hose is the thread size at both ends. In the European market, almost exclusively threads according to the BSP (British Standard Pipe) standard, marked as G, are used in bathroom accessories, not metric threads M. This is why you cannot confuse the thread of a shower hose with a regular garden hose adapter – they look similar, but are not the same.

Thread G 1/2" (inch): the de facto world standard

Almost 95% of all shower hoses on the market, including all common European products, use a G 1/2" thread at both ends. In absolute numbers, this means an outer thread diameter of approx. 20.96 mm and a thread pitch (lead) of 14 threads per inch (14 TPI). This dimension is compatible with practically every standard shower valve (wall-mounted and freestanding), with every sliding rod and with all standard handheld shower heads.

For example, if you look at the GEMINI shower set, it is a product with a typical G 1/2" thread on the hose – both ends are the same and compatibility with standard valves is guaranteed.

Thread G 3/8": an exception, not the rule

Occasionally you will come across older foreign valves (especially from Italy and Spain from the 80s and 90s) or cheap market products, where the shower output is G 3/8". The outer diameter of such a thread is approx. 16.66 mm. These valves are installed very rarely today and you almost never encounter them on the regular Slovak market. If you have an older bathroom and are leaking, always measure the thread diameter before ordering a hose.

Diameter of the hose itself (inner clear diameter): what affects the flow

In addition to the thread, the hose also has an inner diameter – that is, the clear diameter of the opening through which water flows. This is where a lot of confusion arises, as manufacturers quote different values. In practice, the following applies:

  • Inner diameter 8 mm – the most common standard for regular shower hoses, fully sufficient for pressure of 2–4 bar and standard shower heads with a flow of 6–12 l/min.
  • Inner diameter 10–12 mm – stronger flow, used for rain showers and large-diameter heads, where you need the full volume of water.
  • Inner diameter 6 mm – cheap hoses, lower flow, clog faster with limescale, not recommended for long-term use.

For a regular bathroom with normal water pressure, an 8 mm inner diameter is absolutely sufficient and in practice you won't notice any difference compared to 10 mm, unless you have an extremely large shower head.

Length of the shower hose: how to choose the right one

This is the question where people make the most mistakes in practice. We have seen customers who bought a 150 cm hose for an 80 × 80 cm shower and the hose kept dragging on the floor. And we have also seen people who chose a 100 cm hose and during a bath with a small child in the tub, it didn't reach the whole area.

Commonly available hose lengths on the market

  • 100 cm (1 m) – short hose, suitable only for shower cubicles with a rod, where the valve is directly next to the rod and you move only in a small area. In practice, it is uncomfortable.
  • 125 cm (1.25 m) – medium length, a good compromise for shower cubicles with a sliding rod, where the valve and rod are close to each other (up to 50 cm horizontal distance).
  • 150 cm (1.5 m) – de facto the most commonly used length on the Slovak market, suitable for most shower cubicles and combined tubs with a shower set. It gives enough freedom of movement and at the same time doesn't tangle on the floor.
  • 175 cm (1.75 m) – a good choice for tubs (tub sets), where you need to reach the other end of the tub, or for people of taller stature.
  • 200 cm (2 m) – long hose for special applications: large acrylic tubs, showers for people with reduced mobility (barrier-free bathrooms), or situations where the valve is far from the shower area.

Practical way to choose the length: measure, don't think

The most reliable way is simple measurement. Take the old hose or a piece of string, attach one end to the valve outlet and move the other end as you would move the shower head during real showering. Add 20–30 cm of reserve. This number is your ideal hose length.

Alternatively, you can use this rule of thumb from practice:

  • Shower enclosure 80 × 80 cm, rod next to the faucet: 125–150 cm
  • Shower enclosure 90 × 90 cm or 80 × 120 cm, rod away from the faucet: 150 cm
  • Bathtub with a bathtub faucet, standard length of the tub 160–170 cm: 150–175 cm
  • Large bathtub or barrier-free bathroom: 175–200 cm
  • Shower column with an integrated faucet: the hose is usually part of the set, you solve compatibility, not the length

Material and hose construction: what the braiding hides

Most shower hoses look the same at first glance – metal braiding, two loops, plastic or metal hanger. The difference, however, is inside and in the quality of the braiding itself.

Single-wall vs. double-wall hoses

Cheaper hoses (price under 5 €) have one inner layer made of PVC or rubber and one outer braiding made of tinned steel. These hoses usually last 2–4 years with normal use. When in contact with aggressive cleaning agents or water with high calcium content, the braiding starts to flake and the inner rubber becomes brittle.

Higher quality hoses have a double inner layer (EPDM + PA or silicone + PA), braiding made of stainless or brass steel, and brass, not plastic, threads. Such a hose lasts 8–12 years and even longer with proper maintenance. If you buy a complete set, for example, shower set MOZART 3-position, 80 cm in chrome, the hose is designed to be part of a complete solution with adequate quality for everyday household use.

Type of hose hanger: rotating vs. fixed

Almost all modern shower hoses have a rotating nut at both ends, which allows the hose to rotate freely without twisting. In cheaper hoses, the thread is directly in the hanger body and the hose twists with every movement. Over time, the twisting becomes permanent and the hose hangs poorly. Always check whether the hanger rotates freely – this is a basic criterion when choosing.

Anti-drip valve in the hanger

Some hoses, especially when used with set shower sets, have a built-in anti-drip check valve in the hanger. This prevents residual water from dripping from the head onto the floor after the water is turned off. It is not standard, but it is a pleasant detail that you will appreciate especially with an expensive shower head with a larger water volume in the body.

Sealing in the thread: rubber vs. teflon vs. nothing

Every shower hose must have a sealing rubber washer (flat gasket made of EPDM or silicone) in each hanger. This washer is the only thing that keeps the water inside the system. With a new hose, the washer is always included – either mounted in the hanger or attached in a small pouch. Check this before installation.

Teflon (PTFE tape) is not used on shower hose connections – it is a flat end with a sealing washer, not a tapered thread where teflon would make sense. If someone advises you to use teflon on a shower hose, they probably confuse the type of thread.

Special situations: under-bench battery, column, telescopic arm

Under-bench battery and hose

With an under-bench battery, the output for the shower is always G 1/2" – without exception. The difference compared to the wall-mounted solution is that the hose connector (outlet socket) is embedded in the wall and the hose comes directly from it. The most important parameter here is the position of the outlet: the outlet is usually at a height of 90–110 cm from the floor, and the sliding rod is next to it or above it. We recommend a 150 cm hose as a minimum, because with an under-bench solution you have no reserve from the position of the battery.

Shower column and integrated hoses

Shower columns (thermostatic or manual) usually have a hose that is pre-set – either as a fixed part of the column or included in the set. Here you do not deal with the diameter (it is always G 1/2"), but you can consider whether the hose is long enough in relation to the height of the column. If the column is 110 cm high and the output for the handheld shower is on the side rod at a height of 80 cm, a 150 cm hose will give you 70 cm of free hand movement – which is usually sufficient.

Telescopic arm and hose

A telescopic shower arm, such as the telescopic arm TEVERE, is mounted directly on the battery outlet or on a wall connector and is used to adjust the height of the shower head without a rod. With a telescopic arm, there is no hose – the shower head is attached directly to the end of the arm. If you want to have a handheld shower as well, you must either have a combination of the arm with a sliding rod or a battery with two outlets.

Compatibility of hoses with shower sets

When you buy a complete shower set, the hose is usually part of the package and you only consider compatibility when you want to replace the hose (for example, a longer one, made of a different material, or of a different color). Most manufacturers prepare a 150 cm hose as standard, which is fully sufficient for normal use.

For example, with the set for the MGL battery, you get a complete set tailored to the specific battery – the thread, length and connector are designed to fit together without adapters. However, if you want to replace only the hose (for example, you have a set without a hose like the 80 cm MOZART shower set without a shower head), make sure that the replacement hose has the same thread diameter (G 1/2") and that the length corresponds to the height range of the sliding rod.

Can I combine hoses from different manufacturers?

Yes, but with some limitations. The G 1/2" thread is a worldwide standard and hoses can be combined across manufacturers. A problem may arise with the shape of the hanger – some shower heads have a connector with a larger outer diameter that does not fit into some sliding holders. However, this concerns the connection of the head to the rod, not the hose to the battery itself.

Installation and tightening: how much is enough

This is another point where customers regularly make mistakes. A shower hose is not tightened with a wrench – you tighten it by hand and then add a maximum of 1/4 turn with a wrench (French wrench or plumber's pliers). No more. If you tighten it too much, you risk cracking the plastic internal nut or damaging the seal, which will cause dripping – paradoxically the opposite of what you want to achieve.

Connection drips even after tightening: why?

If it drips at the connection, the cause is almost always the seal. Either the rubber gasket is missing, it is cracked (in an old seal), or the gasket is not properly seated (it jumped during installation). Unfasten the hose, check and replace the gasket (they are commonly available for a few cents in any hardware store or online shop). Never tighten it even more – this will not solve the problem, it will only damage the thread.

Color and surface finish of the hose: aesthetics and durability

Shower hoses are produced in various surface finishes, the most common being:

  • Chrome – the most common, shiny silver, easy to clean, suitable for most modern bathrooms.
  • Matte chrome / brushed steel – a more modern look, less visible fingerprints and limescale.
  • Black matte – trendy for industrial and modern bathrooms, but requires regular wiping, otherwise water droplets are very visible.
  • Gold / bronze – for retro and more luxurious interiors, requires gentle maintenance (no aggressive cleaners).
  • White – less common, suitable for white sanitary ceramic fittings.

When choosing a color, make sure the color of the hose matches the color of the battery suspension, sliding rod and shower head. In practice, customers most often underestimate this – they buy a nice matte black battery, a chrome rod and a gold hose. The result looks chaotic.

Water pressure and hose selection: what risks come with low quality

The standard water pressure in an apartment building in Slovakia ranges from 2–4 bar. In a family home with its own well or pressure tank, the pressure can be 4–6 bar. If you have an older family home with a gravity-fed system, the pressure may be only 0.5–1.5 bar.

Every certified shower hose must meet EN 1113, which ensures a pressure test at 1.5 MPa (15 bar) – several times higher than the standard household pressure. If you buy a hose from an unknown manufacturer without certification, this is not guaranteed. At a pressure of 4–5 bar and with a low-quality hose, it can happen that the hose bursts at the braid or the coupling flies out – and that is not a pleasant experience in the shower.

When to replace the hose and what to watch for

Shower hoses do not have a prescribed lifespan, but practice shows these approximate values:

  • Cheap single-layer hose (PVC + galvanized steel): 2–4 years
  • Middle-range hose (rubber + stainless steel braid): 5–8 years
  • High-quality hose (EPDM/silicone + stainless steel braid + brass couplings): 8–15 years

Signs that the hose needs to be replaced:

  • The braid begins to tear or the wires loosen – risk of hand injury
  • The hose is permanently twisted and does not return to a straight position
  • Leaking at the coupling even after replacing the gasket (thread damaged)
  • Crunching sound inside the hose when bent – the inner lining is cracking
  • The hose visibly discolored, the braid is rusty

Most frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Is every shower hose compatible with every valve?

Almost always yes, if it is a standard European product. The vast majority of shower valves and hoses use the G 1/2" thread, which is universal. Exceptions are older valves with a G 3/8" output (rare) or special industrial/garden products, which do not belong in a bathroom. If you are unsure, simply measure the outer diameter of the valve output – for G 1/2", it is approximately 21 mm.

Why does my new hose leak immediately after installation?

The most common cause is a missing or improperly seated gasket. Unfasten the hose, check whether the rubber washer is present and correctly positioned in the coupling (not popped out), and re-tighten. Another possible cause is an over-tightened nut that cracked the gasket – in that case, replace the gasket. Teflon tape will not solve the problem with a shower hose; the gasket must be a flat rubber washer.

Can I use a 200 cm long hose in a small 80×80 cm shower cubicle?

Technically yes, but practically it is not advisable. A hose that is too long will drag along the floor of the cubicle, due to constant movement the braid will wear out faster, there is a risk of tripping, and aesthetics are problematic. For an 80×80 cm cubicle, the optimal length is 125–150 cm. A longer hose only makes sense for a bathtub or barrier-free bathroom.

What internal diameter of hose is needed for a rain shower?

For standard rain showers with a head diameter up to 25 cm, a standard hose with an internal diameter of 8 mm is sufficient at normal pressure of 2–4 bar. For larger rain heads (diameter 30 cm or more) or at pressure below 2 bar, we recommend a hose with an internal diameter of 10–12 mm to achieve the full rain effect. Naturally, the valve must also have a sufficiently large output opening – this is a separate topic when selecting a valve.

Can I extend an existing hose using an adapter?

Technically, there are extension adapters (hose-to-hose connector, G 1/2" internal thread on both sides), but we do not recommend it in practice. Every additional connection is another potential leak point. Moreover, an extended assembled hose is mechanically less flexible and less reliable in the long run. Economically and practically, it is better to buy a new hose of the correct length – the price of a standard quality hose is 8–20 € depending on the material.

Should I buy a hose separately, or rather a complete shower set?

It depends on the situation. If you are only replacing a worn-out hose and the rest of the set (head, rod, sliding holder) is still in good condition, buy only the hose with the same thread diameter and similar length. If you want to completely renew the shower system or you are buying a new bathroom, it is worth buying a complete shower set, where everything is matched together, such as the GEMINI shower set or the MOZART 3-position set – you will save time and nerves looking for compatible parts.

Conclusion: a shower hose is not a detail, it is the foundation

It may seem like a small thing, but the right hose is the foundation of a functional and safe shower system. G 1/2" thread, 150 cm length for most bathrooms, internal diameter 8 mm, swivel couplings, flat rubber gaskets on both ends, and high-quality stainless steel braid – these are parameters you cannot compromise on.
