Fixed arms are the simplest: they have a fixed length, fixed angle, and cannot be adjusted in any way. They work reliably, are cheap, and require little maintenance. Problems arise when you need to direct the water stream differently — for example, during a bathroom renovation, the wall connection ends up at a different height than you wanted, or when the family consists of people of different ages. In such cases, a fixed arm simply isn't enough.

Telescopic and rotatable arms eliminate these limitations. Each does so in a different way — and that's precisely why both types deserve a separate explanation.

Telescopic shower arm: principle and range of adjustment

A telescopic arm works on the principle of two nested tubes. The inner tube can be extended or retracted relative to the outer one, changing the overall length of the arm. Once the desired length is set, the position is fixed — most commonly by a rotating nut or a tightening ring that you tighten manually or with a wrench.

A typical range for a telescopic arm is from about 35 cm to 65 cm, although there are also longer variants with a range of 40–80 cm, or special models for low ceilings or atypical situations. Thanks to this, you can cover a relatively wide range of situations with one arm without having to change the wall connection.

Practical example: during the renovation of an older panel apartment bathroom, you discover that the mason installed the wall connection 15 cm closer to the corner than you had planned. With a fixed arm, you would either have to redo the plumbing (an expensive operation) or settle for a less ideal position of the shower. With a telescopic arm, you simply extend the length to the required measure, and the showerhead ends up exactly where it should be — above the center of the shower area.

Where a telescopic arm is most suitable

  • Families with significantly different heights among members — a telescopic arm by itself is not enough to change the height (that's handled by a sliding rod), but by changing the length, you can more comfortably direct the head to the right place.
  • Bathrooms after renovation — the new connection doesn't always end up exactly where you wanted; a telescopic arm gives some leeway without the need to extend the plumbing.

Rotatable shower arm: what it is and how it works

A rotatable (articulated) arm has at least one movable joint that allows changing the angle — vertically, horizontally, or in both directions. Some models have a joint only at the point of connection to the wall, while others combine several rotating points, making the arm act like a "hand" capable of reaching different places in the bathroom.

The joint can be constructed as:

  • Ball joint — allows movement in all directions, usually within a range of ±30° to ±45° from the basic direction. It is the most flexible, but requires a good seal, as water must flow through it.
  • Rotatable joint in one plane — the arm can be folded only up/down (vertically), or only to the sides (horizontally). A simpler construction, less prone to leaks.
  • Double-jointed or multi-segmented arm — consists of several segments; each joint adds a degree of freedom. Suitable where the wall is far from the ideal position or where the bathroom corner is atypical.

A swivel arm is ideal for situations where the wall with the connection is not parallel to the desired direction of the water flow. Classic example: a bathroom with a window, where you have a connection on the side wall and want a shower in the corner – a swivel arm will direct the head into the correct angle without any structural modifications.

Installation of a telescopic arm step by step

Installation of a telescopic arm is a task for an experienced DIY enthusiast, taking 20–30 minutes. You will need: an adjustable wrench or a spanner (or a flat wrench 24–27 mm), Teflon tape, silicone sealing compound, and possibly a small spirit level.

Preparation: checking the wall connection

Before any work, check the wall connection. It should be a G 1/2" thread (internal thread in the fitting), which is the European standard for shower plumbing. Step 1: Removing the old arm

If you are replacing an existing arm, turn it counterclockwise. Most arms can be removed by hand, older models may be fixed by anti-corrosion coating or limescale – in that case, use a wrench with a protective sleeve to avoid damaging the wall surface. Clean the wall connection thread from any remaining Teflon tape and limescale, best with a small metal brush.

Step 2: Applying Teflon Tape

Wrap the thread of the arm (the part that goes into the wall) with 4–6 layers of Teflon tape in the direction of the thread – that is, clockwise when viewed from above. The tape must be tight and evenly distributed. This is the most important step for the tightness of the connection – an underestimated Teflon tape is the cause of most leaking arms.

Step 3: Screwing into the Wall

Insert the thread into the wall fitting and start turning it by hand to prevent the thread from catching at an angle (so-called cross-threading). When you feel resistance, tighten it with a wrench. Tightening requires approximately 1.5 to 2.5 turns of the wrench after the first mechanical resistance is reached. Do not over-tighten – the brass thread is soft and may crack or strip the fitting under excessive force.

Step 4: Adjusting the Length and Fixing

Extend the inner tube to the desired length. Make sure there is a sealing gasket (rubber washer) at the end of the inner tube (where the head is mounted) and that it is in good condition. Tighten the fixing nut – manually for a ball joint, with a wrench for a square joint, tightening 2–3 sides. Check with a spirit level or visually to ensure the arm is at the desired angle.

Step 5: Mounting the Shower Head

Mount the shower head onto the external thread of the arm. If the head does not have its own sealing, insert a rubber washer between the thread and the head. Tighten by hand – shower heads are usually not tightened with a wrench to avoid damaging the plastic or surface finish.

Step 6: Pressure Test

Open the water briefly to full pressure and check both connections – the wall fitting and the head connection. If it leaks, tighten by an additional half turn. If the dripping continues, the arm must be disassembled and additional layers of Teflon tape added.

Installation of a rotating (articulated) arm: specifics and differences

The procedure is similar to that for a telescopic arm, but with an articulated arm, special attention must be paid to the joint itself. It must be in the basic (horizontal) position during installation – never try to seal it with tape in the extreme position, as the tape may crack once moved to the basic position.

Some rotating arms have a joint through which water does not flow (water flows only through the solid part, the joint is used only for mechanical adjustment) – in these models, the risk of water leakage at the joint is minimal. Other models have the joint directly in the water flow – in these cases, it is important to verify that the joint sealing is made of rubber or silicone, not hard plastic, and to carefully check it after installation.

After installing the rotating arm into the wall, set the desired angle, then gently tighten the fixing screw or nut of the joint just enough to hold the position, but still allowing the arm to be moved with some effort. Over-tightening may damage the rubber sealing in the joint.

Brass body with chrome finish

A cheaper alternative. Plastic is light, but less durable when exposed to higher temperatures for a long time (bathrooms with floor heating and poor ventilation may have relatively high floor temperatures). Threads on a plastic body must be tightened with particular care.

Stainless steel arms

The most durable, but also the most expensive. They are mainly used in hotels, guest houses or bathrooms with permanently humid environments (wellness areas, saunas). For home use, they are more of a premium choice.

Common installation errors and how to avoid them

Over the years of working with shower fittings, we repeatedly see the same mistakes – regardless of whether it's bathrooms in panel buildings, detached houses or apartments:

  • Insufficient Teflon tape – the most common cause of dripping at the wall connection. Two layers are not enough, four to six is correct.
  • Cross-threading – occurs when starting to screw with a wrench too quickly without first manually aligning. If the thread "jumps" sideways, it can strip the thread in the wall fitting, which is a rather expensive repair.
  • Over-tightening the swivel arm joint – crushing the rubber seal inside the joint will cause permanent dripping, which cannot be fixed without replacing the entire arm.
  • Telescopic arm fully extended without tightening the fixing nut – under water pressure (typically 3–6 bar in a city network), the inner tube may "dance" and cause noise or gradual self-retraction.
  • Ignoring the sealing washer at the head – a small rubber washer between the arm thread and the head inlet is small, but critical. Without it, this connection will almost always drip.
  • Neglecting angle checking – with swivel arms, people sometimes set the angle "by eye" without using a spirit level or plumb line, resulting in a crooked head that sprays outside the shower area under full pressure.

Special situations and atypical solutions

Low ceiling (less than 220 cm)

In older houses, attics or semi-basement bathrooms, we encounter low ceilings where standard arm lengths cause the shower head to be too high and the rain effect does not work properly. In such cases, consider a short fixed arm with a downward angle combined with a rain head – instead of a long telescopic one. A swivel arm with a pronounced downward angle (-30° and more) may also be a suitable solution.

Corner shower with side connection

If the wall with the connection is on the side (not the back wall, where you stand), you need an arm with a pronounced horizontal rotation. Some ball joint arms allow rotation of up to 90° in the horizontal plane, which is ideal in such cases. Wall-mounted valve without visible connection

With wall-mounted valves, the outlet neck is embedded in the wall and the arm is directly connected to it. Here, a short fixed arm (5–10 cm) is often ideal, because the wall-mounted valve is designed to have the output at the correct height and in the correct direction. In rented apartments, where you don't want to make structural changes, a telescopic arm is ideal – it allows you to set the optimal length without any wall modifications, and when you move out, you can return it to its original position or replace it with the original arm in 15 minutes.

Maintenance and long-term reliability

Telescopic and swivel arms require a bit more attention than fixed ones, but not drastically more. Basic maintenance includes:

  • Cleaning the surface – clean chrome arms with a soft cloth after each use to prevent limescale deposits. Once a month, it is advisable to use a mild vinegar solution (1 part vinegar : 3 parts water) to remove limescale deposits. Never use abrasive cleaners or steel wool.
  • Checking the telescopic arm fixing nut – check once every 6 months whether the nut has not become loose. Vibrations from water pressure can gradually loosen the fixing, which could lead to the arm retracting on its own.
  • Checking the swivel arm joint – visually check for water leakage from the joint every time you change the position. If there is any, the cause is a loose or worn rubber seal. Most manufacturers provide replacement seals as consumables.
  • Checking the wall connection – once a year, check whether there is moisture at the connection between the arm and the wall. Over time, the aging of Teflon tape can lead to gradual seepage, which you may not notice until damage occurs on the wall or on the tenant below you.

Compatibility: what to check before buying

Before ordering a telescopic or swivel arm, check the following parameters:

  • Wall connection thread – the standard G 1/2" external thread is compatible with the vast majority of European arms. If you have a different dimension, you will need a reducer.
  • Thread at the end of the arm for the head – also the standard G 1/2" external thread. Larger diameter rain shower heads (200+ mm) may sometimes have G 3/4", in which case check whether the arm is designed for the larger thread or whether it has an adapter for it.
  • Maximum load capacity – for large rain shower heads (25 cm or more, weight 400–800 g), check whether the arm can support the weight without excessive bending. Manufacturers specify the maximum load in kg.
  • Surface finish – matching with other bathroom elements (faucet, baskets, hooks) is aesthetically important. Chrome easily combines, while matte finishes require consistent coordination.
  • Length range vs. required length – measure the distance from the wall connection to the place where you want the center of the shower head. The telescopic arm must have this dimension in the middle of its range, not at its limit.

Most frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Can I install a telescopic arm myself, without a plumber?

Yes, in the vast majority of cases yes. Installing the arm does not require interference with the plumbing – the arm is screwed into the existing wall connection just like a fixed arm. You only need an adjustable wrench, Teflon tape, and about 20–30 minutes. If you have previously changed, for example, a shower hose or a handheld shower, you can handle the arm without problems. An exception is when the old connection is damaged or has a non-standard thread – in that case, it is better to call a plumber.

How long will a telescopic arm last compared to a fixed one?

With the same material quality (brass + chrome finish), the difference in lifespan should be minimal – both types will last 10–20 years with normal home use. A telescopic arm has one or two more joints (fixing nut), where problems can appear earlier, but with proper installation and regular checks, this risk is negligible. Plastic telescopic arms have a shorter lifespan – expect 5–8 years with intensive use.

Can I use a telescopic arm with any shower head?

Practically yes, as long as the head has a standard G 1/2" internal thread (which is true for 95% of commonly sold heads). The only exception is some premium larger diameter rain shower heads, which have a G 3/4" thread – in that case, either buy an arm with a larger thread or use a reducer.
