Original Protherm and Vaillant control units communicate with the boiler via the eBus bus – a proprietary digital communication protocol that allows for a much richer exchange of information. The boiler can tell the control unit its current water temperature, error codes, burner output, circulation status, and dozens of other parameters. Do I need to buy an outdoor temperature sensor separately for weather-compensated control?
Yes, in most cases you do. Weather-compensated control is a function, not a finished product – it's a way of controlling the boiler, for which you need:

- A controller with this function (e.g. Thermolink RC or the corresponding Vaillant model)
- An outdoor NTC temperature sensor connected to the boiler or controller

Vaillant VRT 50 is a wired room controller for Vaillant boilers with an eBus bus. What are NTC sensors and when do they need to be replaced?
An NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) sensor is a resistive temperature sensor whose electrical resistance changes with temperature – the higher the temperature, the lower the resistance. This is a physically simple principle, but absolutely key for control units: it is precisely NTC sensors that "tell" the boiler and control unit what the temperature of the water, outdoor air, or boiler tank is.

Can I install the control unit myself, or do I need to call a technician?
It depends on exactly what you're installing. The room controller itself on the wall – for example the Thermolink B or VRT 50 – is, from an electrical safety point of view, a low-voltage device (the eBus operates with signals in the range of a few volts), which means its installation and wiring is less critical in terms of electrical safety than working with 230 V. Many technically skilled customers install these devices themselves according to the manual.
However, when connecting to the boiler, you are working inside a device where 230 V voltages are present. If you are not an electrician or an experienced DIY enthusiast, we recommend entrusting the physical connection to the boiler's terminal block to a professional. Not because the eBus itself is dangerous, but because improper handling inside the boiler can damage the control board – and its replacement can cost more than an entire service visit.
Setting up the control unit after installation – setting the curve, program, setback – is, on the other hand, routine operation that every user can handle according to the manual. Modern Protherm and Vaillant control units have a relatively intuitive menu and usually at least a Slovak or Czech description.
The outdoor temperature sensor (wired NTC sensor for Protherm) can be installed by a technically skilled customer themselves – it involves mounting a plastic box on the facade and running the cable. - Function not activated in the boiler menu – some boilers require you to activate the external control function in the service menu. Without this, the boiler ignores the eBus signal or reports an error.

How long does it take for the weather-compensated control to "adapt" to my house?
This is a question that interests every customer after installing weather-compensated control – and the answer is not entirely straightforward. The weather compensation curve (slope and offset) is set in the boiler or controller menu and determines by how many degrees the boiler should increase the water temperature for each degree drop in outdoor temperature.
The basic setting recommended by the manufacturer is a good starting point, but every building is different: it depends on thermal insulation, type of heating system (radiators, underfloor heating), house orientation, number of occupants, and their habits. That's why the initial tuning usually takes a whole heating season – you observe whether the house is warm enough during frosts, or conversely, whether it overheats during transitional periods, and adjust the curve accordingly.

What happens if the outdoor temperature sensor is disconnected or breaks?
Most Protherm and Vaillant boilers automatically switch to backup mode if the outdoor sensor fails – they turn off weather-compensated control and switch to a fixed outlet water temperature or control according to the room thermostat (if connected).
