Which Vaillant Boilers Are Compatible with the VRT 50

The VRT 50 is compatible with practically all Vaillant gas boilers that have a terminal block on the circuit board for a room thermostat, typically labelled "RT" or "TA". Specifically, we are talking about these series:

Important note: the VRT 50 is not a digital control and does not communicate via the eBus bus. It therefore does not offer any advanced functions such as output modulation, remote diagnostics, or displaying error codes. What You Will Need Before Starting the Installation

Before starting the installation, prepare the following:

  • VRT 50 thermostat – with the supplied mounting frame and screws
  • Two-core cable CYSY 2×0.5 mm² or JYSTY 2×0.5 mm² – length depending on the distance from the boiler room to the room. 0.5 mm² is normally sufficient, but for runs longer than 30 m we recommend 0.75 mm²

  4. On newer ecoTEC plus models these are the terminals marked RT 1 and RT 2 (or simply numbered according to the terminal block)

Important: On some Vaillant boilers (mainly ecoTEC plus from a certain generation onwards), the RT terminals are bridged by a factory-fitted jumper – a short link that tells the boiler "heat continuously". This jumper must be removed and replaced with the wires from the thermostat. If you forget to remove the jumper and connect the thermostat anyway, the boiler will keep heating regardless of the thermostat – which is the classic customer complaint of "the thermostat doesn't work".

Step-by-Step Wiring Procedure

Step 1 – Disconnecting the Boiler from the Mains

Switch off the boiler using its switch, and unplug it from the socket, or switch off the circuit breaker in the distribution board that supplies the boiler. Use a voltage indicator screwdriver or voltmeter to check that there is no voltage on the boiler terminals. This step cannot be skipped.

Step 2 – Routing the Cable from the Boiler Room to the Room

Choose a suitable route for the cable. The most common options are:

  • Under plaster – the best solution in terms of aesthetics, but requires chasing the wall and must be done before finishing the interior
  • In electrical trunking – a fast, clean, aesthetic solution for renovations
  • In an installation conduit – suitable for routing through walls, floors or attics

The room thermostat should be placed in the reference room – that is, the room whose temperature you primarily want to regulate. In most households this is the living room. The thermostat should be:

  • At a height of 1.2–1.5 m above the floor
  • On an interior wall (not a wall adjoining the exterior)
  • Away from direct sunlight
  • Away from heat sources (TV, lamp, radiator below it)
  • Away from draughts (near doors, windows)
  • Not in the kitchen, bathroom or hallway

Step 3 – Mounting the VRT 50 Frame on the Wall

The VRT 50 comes with a plastic mounting frame. Place the frame against the wall, mark the position of the mounting holes with a pencil, and if necessary the hole for the cable (if it comes out of the wall). Drill the holes, insert wall plugs and fix the frame in place. Route the cable through the back of the frame and leave about 8–10 cm protruding.

Step 4 – Connecting the Cable to the VRT 50 Thermostat

Strip the end of the cable (about 4–5 cm in total) and strip both wires by 6–8 mm. Check that the wires are firmly seated and cannot be pulled out with a gentle tug. Make sure that no loose wire touches other terminals or metal parts of the circuit board.

Step 6 – First Start-Up and Function Check

Switch the boiler back on (plug it in / switch on the breaker). Set the desired heating water temperature and domestic hot water temperature on the boiler as usual. Set the thermostat lower than the actual room temperature – for example to 15 °C when the room is at 21 °C. The boiler should not start. Then set the thermostat to 25 °C – the boiler should start within a few seconds (or after a short delay, which is built into the boiler as protection against short cycling).

If the boiler does not start even with the thermostat set high and the jumper correctly removed, check the following:

  • Whether both wires are firmly inserted into the terminals (on both sides)
  • Whether heating is enabled on the boiler (some models have a summer/winter switch)
  • Whether another blocking input of the boiler is active (e.g. an input from room temperature, an external time programmer)
  • Whether the boiler is displaying an error code that would prevent it from operating

Interaction of the VRT 50 with Other Boiler Controls and Sensors

The VRT 50 is a simple switch that only controls the basic "heat / don't heat" function. On most Vaillant boilers, it is possible to use weather-compensation control (outdoor temperature sensor) and a room thermostat simultaneously. Do I need an electrician to connect the VRT 50?

In terms of voltage, no – the VRT 50 operates with a voltage-free contact, and a CYSY 2×0.5 mm² cable does not carry 230V. Technically, this is a low-voltage circuit that is not legally required to be installed by an authorised person. Nevertheless: opening the boiler and working inside it may only be done by a person with appropriate electrotechnical training (at least an "instructed person" under the relevant regulations) or should be left to a service technician, since the boiler also contains live 230V parts. In any case of doubt, call a professional.

Why does the boiler keep heating even though I've set the thermostat to minimum?

Most likely, the factory jumper on the RT terminals in the boiler has not been removed. Check it and remove it. Another possibility is a mechanical fault directly in the thermostat – the bimetallic contact has become permanently stuck closed (e.g. after mechanical damage). In that case, the thermostat needs to be replaced.

Can I connect the VRT 50 to other boilers, not just Vaillant?
