When choosing a new gas boiler, sooner or later every customer runs into the same question: should the boiler be floor-standing, that is a unit on its own base standing on the ground, or wall-hung, hanging on the wall as a compact cabinet? It is one of the most common dilemmas when planning heating for a family house, a flat, a business, or when renovating an older boiler room, and the answer has a direct impact on how much space the boiler takes up, what output it can deliver, how much hot water the whole household can prepare at once, and how much the whole heating project will ultimately cost.

Both designs have their place, and in practice it cannot be said that one is universally better than the other – it depends on the size of the building, the available space, current domestic hot water (DHW) consumption, and whether it is a new build or a renovation of an existing boiler room, where the existing infrastructure (chimney, gas supply, condensate discharge, electrical connection) already dictates something. Construction and placement: floor vs. wall

The basic and most visible difference is already in the name itself. A floor-standing boiler is a unit on its own base that stands directly on the floor of the boiler room, utility room, or basement. Structurally it is a more robust body – it usually has its own separate frame or casing carrying the heat exchanger, burner, control electronics, and (in compact models) a built-in hot water tank. Precisely because it doesn't have to adapt to the constraints of a load-bearing wall, a floor-standing boiler can have a larger, heavier, more powerful exchanger and a wider burner, allowing it to reach higher outputs with a more stable, even operating regime.

A wall-hung boiler, on the other hand, is designed to fit on a wall – it hangs on a metal bracket anchored into masonry or a load-bearing partition. Inside a compact casing (usually about the size of a kitchen cabinet) all the technology is packed together: the exchanger, circulation pump, expansion vessel, gas valve assembly and control electronics. This "all-in-one package" is the reason wall-hung boilers are so often installed directly into a kitchen cabinet run, into a wall-mounted cabinet in the bathroom, in a hallway, in a storage room, or in a flat's utility room, where a floor-standing solution simply wouldn't have anywhere to fit.

Placement also has a practical consequence for future servicing and maintenance. A floor-standing boiler, since it stands freely in the room or against a wall, is accessible from most sides – a service technician has comfortable access to the exchanger, the burner and any built-in tank. With a wall-hung boiler, on the other hand, it's important to keep the minimum clearances from side walls and furniture prescribed by the manufacturer, to ensure access during professional inspection and cleaning.

If you are renovating an older boiler room where a large solid-fuel boiler or an older gas boiler has stood for years, it is natural to consider a floor-standing replacement – the space and layout of the room are already set up for it. Conversely, for a new-build flat or when modernising heating in a prefab apartment block, where every square metre is expensive, a compact wall-hung solution generally makes more sense.

Output and DHW tank size

The second major difference is in the output range each design typically covers. Floor-standing boilers are commonly manufactured in the output range of roughly 20 kW up to 90 kW and more, and in commercial and industrial applications (several boilers connected in a cascade), a significantly higher total output can be reached. This output reserve is why floor-standing boilers are deployed in larger family houses, multi-generational houses, apartment buildings, cottages with a larger heated area, and also commercial premises – restaurants, guesthouses, small workshops – where both heating and high, peak hot water consumption need to be covered at the same time (for example several bathrooms at once).

Wall-hung boilers commonly cover an output range up to about 35 kW, which in practice is more than enough for heating and hot water preparation for a flat, a smaller to medium-sized family house, or a holiday property. For the vast majority of households in Slovakia, this output range is entirely sufficient – a large output by itself does not mean more comfort if the house doesn't even have that level of heat loss.

There is also a difference in how hot water is prepared. Floor-standing boilers are often combined with a large-volume DHW tank – either built directly into the boiler body (compact design), or an external, freestanding tank with a volume typically of 100 to 300 litres or more. Thanks to this large stored volume of hot water, a household can cover even a peak demand spike – for example in the morning, when several people shower at the same time – without a significant drop in water temperature. Wall-hung boilers are either instantaneous (heating water continuously according to current draw-off, with no tank) or have a small built-in tank of typically a few tens of litres, which is enough for the normal operation of a smaller household, but with simultaneous draw-off in several bathrooms, comfort can be lower than with a large tank-based solution.

Weight and floor or wall requirements

Weight is a topic that is often underestimated when choosing a boiler, yet it is key to a safe and reliable installation. Floor-standing boilers are significantly heavier than wall-hung models – the boiler body alone can weigh tens of kilograms, but for compact designs with a built-in hot water tank filled with water, the total operating weight can reach hundreds of kilograms. That is exactly why floor-standing boilers stand directly on the floor – it must be solid, level and sufficiently load-bearing (an ordinary concrete screed in a boiler room easily meets this requirement), whereas a light prefabricated or wooden floor may need additional reinforcement or the load spread over a larger area.

Wall-hung boilers are structurally lightweight precisely so they can be safely hung on a wall – typical weight is on the order of tens of kilograms. Even so, an important rule applies: the boiler must not hang on just any wall. It must be a load-bearing structure – brick, concrete or other masonry with sufficient strength, where the mounting bracket can be safely anchored. A lightweight plasterboard partition without an internal reinforcing structure (for example a steel or wooden frame designed specifically for this purpose) is not suitable for hanging a boiler on – the anchoring could come loose and the unit could fall.

This very characteristic is one of the most common reasons a floor-standing solution is chosen during a renovation – if the house has a boiler room with a solid floor, but the surrounding walls aren't structurally ready to carry a heavier hanging unit, it's simpler and safer to install a new boiler on the floor than to deal with additional wall reinforcement. Conversely, in a flat, where load-bearing masonry is commonly available on the perimeter and some internal walls, a wall-hung solution has practically no issue with weight.

Price and installation complexity

For comparable output, floor-standing boilers tend to be more expensive than wall-hung models. The reason is the more robust construction, a larger and more durable heat exchanger, a stronger burner, and in many cases an integrated hot water tank, which by itself represents a significant part of the price of the whole unit. In practice, the higher purchase price is offset by higher achievable output, a large hot water reserve, and – for larger buildings or businesses with higher consumption – also a longer expected lifespan under continuous or intensive load, since floor-standing designs are traditionally sized for more demanding, continuous operation.

Installation itself is also generally more demanding, and more time-consuming and expensive, for a floor-standing boiler. The boiler needs a prepared boiler room or utility room, enough space for operation and servicing from all sides, a solution for flue gas discharge (a chimney or turbo outlet), for condensing versions also condensate discharge and neutralisation, or connection to a freestanding DHW tank including circulation piping. At higher outputs, an appropriately sized gas connection also needs to be considered.

A wall-hung boiler, by contrast, is typically faster and cheaper to install – the installer hangs it on a prepared bracket, connects it to the heating, gas, water and flue gas discharge lines (most often a concentric flue through the wall or roof), and the unit is functional within a single day, without needing extensive building work. This very simplicity and speed of installation is one of the main reasons wall-hung boilers are such a popular choice when replacing an old boiler with a new one in an already-lived-in home.

Put simply: if you have a ready boiler room or utility room with a solid floor, and you need higher output or a large hot water reserve (for example for a larger family, several bathrooms, or a commercial business), a floor-standing boiler is the natural choice. Real-world examples

Scenario 1: Renovating a boiler room in a larger family house

Imagine a family house with a usable area of about 220 m², where after decades of service an old cast-iron solid-fuel boiler had reached the end of its life. The house is home to a multi-generational family – parents, their adult children with kids, six people in total, three bathrooms. The existing boiler room in the basement has enough space, a solid concrete floor, a functional chimney, and a separate discharge for any condensate. In this situation, a floor-standing condensing boiler with a higher output and a large hot water tank (either a compact built-in one, or a freestanding external tank with a volume of around 200 litres) clearly makes sense.

The reason is simple – with six occupants and three bathrooms, situations frequently arise where hot water is drawn simultaneously in several places at once (mornings before work and school, evenings after sports). A large tank can cover this peak without a significant drop in water temperature or pressure, something a smaller wall-hung boiler with a small tank or instantaneous heating would struggle to handle under such a load without a loss of comfort. The renovation also makes use of the already-prepared boiler room – there's no need to look for a suitable load-bearing wall or deal with additional building work; it's enough to install a new floor-standing boiler in place of the original one.

Scenario 2: Replacing a boiler in a flat with limited space

The second typical case is a three-room flat in a prefab or new-build apartment building, home to a two- to three-person household with one bathroom. Space for technical equipment here is naturally limited – there's no separate boiler room available, and the boiler needs to be fitted into the kitchen cabinet run, a storage room, or a hallway. In this case a compact wall-hung condensing boiler with an output of around 20–24 kW is the clear choice, similar in size to an ordinary kitchen cabinet, and hung on a load-bearing wall without any building work needed.

With one bathroom and normal household hot water consumption, instantaneous heating or a small built-in tank is entirely sufficient – there's no reason to invest in a more expensive, space-hungry floor-standing solution with a tank of hundreds of litres, which wouldn't have anywhere to fit in the flat anyway. Installing a wall-hung boiler in such a case generally takes only part of a day, so the household can switch to modern, more economical heating with minimal disruption to the flat.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can a wall-hung boiler later be converted into a floor-standing one, or vice versa?

No, these are structurally completely different units with a different casing design, a different mounting method, and a different way of connecting a tank. Switching the type of boiler always means a complete replacement of the unit, not a modification of the existing one.

Is a floor-standing boiler always more powerful than a wall-hung one?

In general, yes – floor-standing boilers cover a higher output range (typically 20 – 90+ kW compared with up to about 35 kW for wall-hung), but that doesn't mean a wall-hung boiler is "weaker" in the sense of being insufficient. For a typical family house or flat, the output of a wall-hung boiler is entirely sufficient; the high output of floor-standing models is mainly used in larger buildings or businesses.
