Installation and Common Issues of Instant DHW Boilers

Buying a condensing boiler with instant domestic hot water (DHW) heating is only the first step - installation must be carried out by a professionally qualified company holding authorization for the installation and servicing of gas appliances. When accepting the completed work, always request an inspection report and a commissioning certificate.

Condensate drainage

A by-product of condensing technology is condensate - an acidic liquid with a pH of approximately 3 to 5. For typical outputs, draining into the nearest waste point (sink, siphon) is sufficient; for higher outputs (cascade connections, larger installations) a neutralization unit is required. It is important that the drain runs through plastic (not metal/cast-iron) piping that will resist the condensate long-term.

Flue gas exhaust (flue)

Concentric exhaust through the facade - a double-wall pipe with a short penetration through the perimeter wall, the most common solution for instant-heating boilers in apartments, does not require a functional chimney. The minimum distance of the outlet from windows, doors and the boundary of the neighboring property must be observed.

Exhaust through an existing chimney - a plastic or stainless steel liner adapted to condensing operation is used, suitable where exhaust through the facade is not possible. You can find suitable components in the flue gas exhausts, flue pipes category.

Gas connection and pressure

Before connection, the gas pipeline must have a valid inspection and a completed pressure test. Correct sizing of the pipe diameter is also important - boilers with instant DHW heating have a higher peak output than purely heating boilers, and an undersized pipe will show up as fluctuations in hot water temperature.

Installation location, electricity and commissioning

The compact size of instant-heating boilers allows installation in a bathroom, utility room or kitchen unit - however, clearances from flammable materials must be observed and sufficient space left for future servicing. The boiler needs a 230V socket with correct grounding, and a residual current device (RCD) is also recommended. During commissioning, the installation company bleeds the system, sets the heating water pressure (typically 1-2 bar) and the operating parameters according to the type of heating system.

Common installation mistakes

  • Undersized gas piping - causes fluctuations in output and temperature during higher draw-off.
  • Incorrect slope of the condensate pipe - the drain must have a permanent fall towards the waste point, otherwise condensate accumulates and can freeze in cold weather.
  • Incorrect placement of the outdoor flue grille - too close to a window can cause flue gases to enter during ventilation.

“Cold sandwich” after reopening the tap

A brief cold burst after reopening the tap is caused by residual cold water in the pipe and the burner's inertia. A pre-heating (micro-accumulation) function helps if the boiler supports it, or the habit of not closing the tap fully, just reducing the flow.

Temperature fluctuations during simultaneous draw-off from multiple points

If the combined draw-off exceeds the boiler's maximum flow rate, the temperature or pressure drops. The solution is to avoid simultaneous draw-off, or, for regular needs, consider a combined system with a storage tank.

Insufficient hot water flow

This is most often caused by a clogged filter at the cold water inlet or a heat exchanger fouled with limescale. The filter can be cleaned by yourself (at least once a year); descaling the exchanger should be left to a service technician during the annual inspection.

Cycling (repeated switching on/off) during draw-off

At a very low draw-off rate near the minimum flow threshold, this is normal behavior. If it also occurs with the tap fully open, it is most likely a fault in the flow sensor - a service check is needed.

Odor or change in water color after a longer shutdown

After a longer absence, we recommend letting the water run freely at all points for a few minutes before first use. If the problem persists after draining, this is a signal for a service check of the exchanger.
