A higher-quality duroplastic seat, on the other hand, holds its shape even after years, doesn't yellow, and withstands common cleaning agents without scratching or losing its shine.

The second reason to spend time on this topic is safety and hygiene. A seat with poor-quality hinges eventually loosens to the point where it shifts sideways when sitting down – which is unpleasant especially for children and older household members. Seats with an antibacterial surface treatment, on the other hand, significantly limit bacterial growth in the microscopic gaps that form faster than you'd think on cheaper plastics. The cheapest and most widespread category, typically in a price band of roughly €8 to €15. It's a simply shaped plastic, usually without any notable surface decoration. The advantage is a low price and easy replacement – if you need to replace a broken seat quickly and cheaply, this is the fastest route. The disadvantage is a shorter lifespan, usually 3 to 5 years with normal household use, and a tendency to bend under higher load. This type also more often lacks soft-close, so the seat bangs against the bowl when it drops.

Duroplastic

Duroplastic is a hardened plastic made by curing resin at high temperature, producing a material with higher hardness, scratch resistance and color stability even after years of exposure to UV radiation and cleaning agents. The price is typically between €25 and €45, slightly higher for seats with a soft-close mechanism. Lifespan under normal use is usually 8 to 12 years, making it the best price-to-durability ratio among commonly available materials. Duroplastic seats also better withstand repeated sitting and standing without becoming wobbly over time.

Wood and Lacquered MDF

Wooden or MDF seats with a multi-layer lacquer finish feel cozier and in some bathrooms match the overall interior better (for example with wooden panels around the tub or wooden furniture elements). The price is around €18 to €30. The disadvantage is sensitivity to moisture if the lacquer is damaged – if the surface layer is compromised (for example by abrasion or long-term exposure to moisture at a leaky spot), the wood underneath can gradually swell. With quality lacquering and normal care, however, these seats typically last 5 to 7 years.

The disadvantage of the soft-close mechanism is that it's a mechanical part, which can wear out or lose its damping effect after years of use – with better branded models, however, this is rare and usually happens only after many years of intensive use. When choosing, we recommend favoring models where the damping mechanism is integrated directly into the hinge as a metal or quality plastic part, not as a cheap add-on "rubber bumper" that eventually tears out.

Mounting System: Bottom-Fix vs. Top-Fix, Quick-Release

The way a seat is attached to the bowl mainly affects how comfortable it is to clean, and also how easily you'll replace it in the future.

Bottom-fix is the classic and most widespread method – screws pass through the seat from above and are tightened with nuts from below the bowl. Adjustable drop dampers on some more expensive models let you fine-tune the closing speed – useful if the standard damping feels too slow or, conversely, too fast for you.

How to Correctly Measure a Toilet Bowl Before Buying a Seat

Measuring takes literally two minutes, but saves you a potential complaint and waiting for a replacement. Proceed as follows:

1. Measure the distance between the centers of both mounting holes on the back of the bowl (most often 140 or 160 mm, sometimes different on older or non-standard models).

2. Measure the total length of the bowl from the back edge (where the seat is mounted) to the farthest point at the front.

3. Measure the greatest width of the bowl at its widest point.

4. Check the shape – compare whether your bowl is more oval (O-shape) or more angular with a flattened back edge (D-shape).

With wooden and MDF seats, it's important to wipe the surface dry after wet cleaning, so moisture doesn't stay on the lacquer's surface long-term.

Every few months, check that the screws are still tight – repeated sitting and standing gradually loosens even quality fixings slightly, and a simple tightening extends the life of the hinges. With seats that have a soft-close mechanism, no special maintenance is needed, the mechanism is usually maintenance-free for the entire lifespan of the seat.
